Shop for the 2020 Volvo XC90 on CarGurus: cargur.us/yfCPd
The XC90 has been one of our favorite family shuttles for 18 model years. This 3-row Volvo continues for 2020 as it was during its 2016 redesign, which brought dramatic new design language, chassis architecture, electrified powertrains, infotainment, and semi-automated driving capability. Among midsize SUVs, the XC90 is among the few I would recommend without any hesitation. Families who can afford to splurge will find a stylish and pampering truck that's built upon decades of safety research, which very few automakers can match.
As expected, the XC90's safety ratings are impeccable, with top scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). However, the latter group's headlight test lowers the XC90's rating to a Top Safety Pick, instead of carrying the "+" designation. Forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, a driver-attention monitor, blind-spot monitoring, and traffic-sign recognition also come standard.
The 2020 XC90 starts at $48,350, which you can promptly disregard due to the base model's front-wheel drive and smaller T5 engine. You'll need to spend $60,000 to get goodies like the better interior materials and tech, the more powerful engine, and all-wheel drive. You needn't go as far as my test car, which stickered for a borderline absurd $74,735 with destination. But compared to brand-new redesigns of the Mercedes-Benz GLE and BMW X5-and older models like the Audi Q7 or Lexus RX-the XC90 is a good value.

Test drive a Telluride or Palisade and you will see that it's a far superior vehicle mechanically. Quiet, logical infotainment, reliable, not as good looking, but that's about it. I can't wait to get rid of my Volvo. If the GV80 weren't coming, I'd get a Telluride or Palisade...and I'm far from poor. I get compliments on how my S90 looks until I tell them about the maintenance nightmare this POS is. I'd rather drive a Chrysler product over this thing. If you've had an accident in a Volvo, lucky you, because short of the safety, there is no true value in owning one produced after 2003.

@@josephwallis3396 Glad you mentioned that. What makes a vehicle a "Luxury" car, objectively speaking? Is it the features, the quality of materials, the performance, the brand, the badge or consumer perception? Also, at what point does a luxury car, turn into a regular ol car? Surely a 2001 Bentley isn't worth more than a 2020 Stinger...and if it were, are the materials, technology or fit and finish truly better at this point?
As a person that can afford any car that I truly want and have owned and leased great cars and Volvos...I'd say the Volvo is the least luxurious, luxury brand I've ever owned outside of visually. I understand the "just a Kia" argument, but it's not founded in logic, more a raw emotional response to price versus value.

The only downside to every current Volvo is the lack of physical controls for the heater controls and seat heating cooling. Hi Clifford 🙂, excellent review of the 2020 XC90, with the size of the SUV it's surprising to me how snug the 3rd row is from what I've heard. The XC90 looks very tall from the outside, so the snug 3rd row is a bummer. The scene in your review with you sitting on the booster seat with the seat belt on was everything 😄. Clifford, how many miles is on your 1998 Volvo S70, did you buy it new in '98 or pre-owned later on? The S70 was actually my dream car since I was in high school at the time when the Volvo 850 transitioned to S70. I love the original boxy shape of both cars since it's distinctly Volvo. I'm not sure if the newest Volvo's have that distinct interior smell of a new Volvo from the '90s, I love that unique smell, there's nothing like it. You probably know what I'm talking about. I absolutely love Volvo sedans between 1993-2000. Do you live in the New England region? I was going by how bundled up you are in this review.

Great looking, great hype...POS. Once you get to know the new Volvos, you realize there is a lot of common sense absent from functionality. Aesthetically amazing, but think about the storage for glasses or the fact that there isn't much storage space in the middle, cup holders annoying and anything short of the T6 AWD is like driving a bus. All of these issues before touching the infotainment flaws. The lag is awful, having to go into the screen for seat and steering wheel heat as well as Heat/AC it can get super annoying. Also, the Volvo chick does not understand a lot. When the temp drops, these things lag even more. AND you have to use that screen for everything. The HUD is worthless as are the steering controls. The tire pressure monitoring system doesn't even tell you what the pressure is...just that a tire is low (not which tire, just a tire). Volvo is not competitive with any of the real SUV's in any category besides aesthetics and safety. It's a Fail for me.

221ddj ...I can find equal numbers of positive reviews and videos. Also, your ranking doesn’t match rankings I have read in the UK and Europe This is the first Volvo I have owned actually, having owned multiple BMW, Audi, VW and even a Porsche Boxster previously. The seat and steering wheel heating takes one touch to open the window, the one touch on the wheel symbol and one on the seat symbol to turn on...or just say seat heat on! Volvos are designed and tested in Sweden, so I think they are designed for the cold. Maybe you just have a lemon!!!🙄

@@MarkEardley1968 Look, if you like your car, great...My experience with the brand is that they make shitty cars. There are countless publications and websites that state the stats on how many issues per 100 cars Volvo has, they usually have more than most if not all other brands. Watch a Savagegeese review of any Volvo...he tells it like it is for better and worse. But either way, you'll like yours and I'll be elated to give this POS back to Volvo in a few months.

Kuya Arbee why? It have better consumption of category and the t8 have a 0-100km/h(60mph) in 5,5s the unique thing that the “4cyl”miss is suond, but in one of the most silent car (measured), behind only the Q7, (car under 100k) the “sound” have no sense
