I'm a Blackpool fan and I've been up and down the country following them. I very fond memories of Charlton, as an away day it was one of my favourites. I studied down South and we played them just after Christmas. Thought I'd take the supporters coach down to London as it was cheaper than getting the train back to University. Had quite a few pub stops on the way and by the time the game kicked off I was way past tipsy. I remember getting out of the ground at the end of the game and not having any idea how to get to Kings Cross so I could get my train to Cambridge. A few Charlton fans went out of their way to make sure I got to the station safely. I have a lot of respect for that, London is a scary place for a Northerner, especially one too drunk to know his way. We lost the game but I still hold it as one of the best away trips I've done. Fans make the difference. From a club that has also suffered awful owners, I wish you all the luck in getting back to your best. Top fans, good luck with your fight!

Lol good luck. Im a gooner but could you ever imagine such a thing happening? Arsenal has long been a money club, with no ties to the local community, most fans aren't from the surrounding area having moved out of Finsbury park and Highbury due to insane house prices. The days of Highbury are long gone, nowadays our plastic support is more interested in internet fame than about creating and protecting a solid identity around a club. Saddens me but it's what money and social media does to the world. Erosion of local values and a solid identity.

As long as Arsenal turns in a profit, which it does due to its massive fanbase, Kroenke won't give a fuck about what happens on the pitch. The only way you'll ever get rid of him is if you decided to boycott games, not buy any merch and so on, but if the real fans won't buy the tickets, Chinese tourists will and Kroenke won't even be able to tell the difference. Doubt that yank even knows the rules of the game, or of any game, for that matter, given the fact that he runs his American franchises in pretty much the same way. Football isn't business, the Bundesliga 50+1 rule should be applied in every league

We loved our Rams, and he moved them from St. Louis to LA (across the nation) because his profits weren’t big enough, as he put it. He’s a monster, but Quincycle is right. He doesn’t care about his teams. His team basically plays all road games, but his seats are still being filled, just by everyone else. We were not even aware he was going to move us. He did this all under the table. God help Arsenal fans, even though he forgot to help St. Louis.

Leyton Orient, Bury, Bolton, Wimbledon, Charlton, Hull City, Coventry, etc. Just so many, EFL has got to do more so this wont happen. I think they should really look at how German clubs are ran with the fans being directly part of the club, pretty much how AFC Wimbledon came to be as the only fan ran club in England going off the German model. I think it can really stop this mess going on. Hopefully Bury fans do what Wimbledon did and one day come back as a new club.

It's saddening to see what happened to Charlton. It's also good to have this inside view because I had been admiring Duchatelet as a business man and politician. He's a very smart man and has bright, novel ideas, which worked in the micro-electronics business, which could work in politics if the system had not protected itself and which I thought were not completely daft in football. But as we've seen many times before, football is a very particular area of socio-economics, where even lots of money don't always buy success: look at what's happening to Man United despite the Glazer's money.
His downfall in football - he stepped out of all the clubs he owned - is due to an incredible hybris, failing to adapt to the particularities of football and clubs, appointing caretaker managers and coaching staff at random, unexperienced and foreign to the country, and thinking he could simply shift people around until the puzzle fell into place. He disregarded the identity of all the clubs he owned, reducing them to pawns on his chessboard. It didn't work and it didn't go down very well.
But, in essence, the idea itself is not stupid. Red Bull has grown a similar holding, buying and rebranding local clubs, moving around staff and players, building a system that combines financial success with technical development. The owners of Brighton, Leicester, ... have also been buying clubs - notably Belgium - to stall players which need some experience or exposure, however much less interfering with the day-by-day management. Duchatelet's idea has shown to work but he failed to engage competent leaders to execute upon it and gain the necessary buy-in from every local faction. He was either micromanaging or having things done by hand puppets like Meire. It remains baffling how a smart man like him turned into a total failure at managing clubs.

Replacing Ronaldo with Valencia, Obertan and Owen and forcing Fergie to lie to the fans. Replacing David Gill with Woodward, being more obsessed about money than the club or the fans. Lack of repair to the stadium. Do I need to spell it out for you? It’s like taking a club the size of Barca and Madrid and running them into the ground, what part of that do you not understand?

Being a lifelong STVV-fan myself, it all sounds very familiar. Attendances dwindling, atmosphere gone, good players being sold below market prices mid-season. After Duchatelet the club has been bought by Japanese owners who continue to make the same mistakes. Result: even lower attendances, even less atmosphere, this club has no soul left. I'd rather have them relegated to the lower leagues and start fresh than to have this circus go on.
