In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Three(3) stages to these tetris vids....Its funny I sit at work and watch this...at first people find it boring(1)...then they walk by 5 minutes later and find it odd(2)... 10 minutes later 5 people are standing behind me staring and find it entertaining(3) ...really is cool when u think about...

I never get tired of watching those two beasts compete. I have never seen so many simul-tetris in my life. And kudos to Harry, one of the best players in the world, still showing us that he can grow and get better even if he is better than 99.99999% of the rest of the world, at Tetris.

I think my favorite thing about the Tetris community is how nice and wholesome everyone is. Trey just sounds like such a nice, chill man. Jonas, Harry and Qwaid are really funny lads too. Jonas played so well under pressure, it was like the game speeded up, or the other player leveled up and Jonas would immediately respond by activating God mode. Incredible to watch. It's rather like traveling fast on a train and watching railway sleepers flicker past, and then the train becomes so fast that all you see is smooth lines, and it's as if in some weird way it's all more relaxed and calm at the highest speed. A kind of Zen zone.
can't wait to watch the full championship of this. I'm sure we'll be seeing these two meet up. Would be awesome to see it in the finals.

I'm very interested to learn more about what you've done here. Just because I'm a fan of your work. It's super sweet and brings a lot to the game of competition Tetris. [edit] I should add, not knowing how all this works, that something similar to this would be very nice for streamers. That blurry ass Tetris gets hard to watch in HD or UHD. Damn, that third game - H/Larry behind for the majority of it by miles, then dials it to 11 and goes absolute ham. Love how deceptively tactical and complex Tetris can be, and how intriguing it is to watch in a competitive light.

I trained some months to become better, my schedule said 500K on 1st September... but then my NES Controller broke inside... it couldn't handle Lv. 19 Tetris (and a bit Contra 1 Button Mashing) for longer than 4 1/2 months... :-(
How long will it take to get the second 500K to max out.
From what I've heard since 500K to maxing out is a much longer path than to 500K... if you want to do that just buy another nes and keep trying!

How are you getting such a clean video stream from an NES? An unmodified NES can't output video that's anywhere near that clean. It natively outputs 240p composite video which, of course, is full of composite video artifacts. What modifications do those NESs have?
