I Sold Out of QYLD

    Yesterday I made the decision to sell all of my shares of QYLD, after first coming across this investment about four years ago. Given how well this ETF has been doing over the last year, I figured now would be a good time to sell my shares of this fund, and put all of my capital gains into a different, brand new ETF I’ve been eyeing for a couple months. QYLD was the first covered call fund I had ever invested in, but I feel like it’s undeniable at this point that newer CC funds with improved strategies have been introduced since I first bought into QYLD, which is why I made this decision. So in this video I’m gonna explain my history with this ETF, why I decided to sell out, and also where I’m investing my capital gains and why.

    I was advised to diversify my portfolio among several assets such as stocks and bonds since this can protect my portfolio for retirement of about $750k. I want to know: Do I keep contributing to my portfolio in these unstable markets, or do I look into alternative sectors?

      Just try to diversify your portfolio to other market sectors, that way your investment is balanced and you don’t get to make so much losses.

      Due to my demanding job, I lack the time to thoroughly assess my investments and analyze individual stocks. Consequently, for the past seven years, I have enlisted the services of a fiduciary who actively manages my portfolio to adapt to the current market conditions. This strategy has allowed me to navigate the financial landscape successfully, making informed decisions on when to buy and sell. Perhaps you should consider a similar approach.

    As a retiree, enjoying the monthly income of QYLD, I'll probably stay put. I also own XYLD and JEPI as "diversification", my QYLD provides about 110% of my RMD annually. It's nice comeback in share price lately is ok, but I'm not reliant on the share price only the dividends. I always hold at least 3 year of RMD's in liquid assets, so the share price is free to follow the market. I enjoy your insights. Keep it up!

  • @newscoulomb3705

    If you've been in QYLD for 5 years, you would have eaten a 20% capital loss. If you were on a DRIP, sure, you might have seen a total net return of 14% after reinvestments, but frankly, that's pretty bad for a 5 year investment. I really don't see the point in closing my small position in QYLD. Maybe that's sunk-cost thinking, but I use the regular dividends to invest in other income shares/ETFs.

    I'm not with you on this one, QYLD even at its current share price is on track to yield nearly 12% this year, that's really good for a CC ETF, I'll be keeping my shares, big problem with the new CC ETF's is the tendency for the share price to fall significantly following their IOP, and the one you mentioned along with a number of others I will be watching are brand new and need time for the share price to settle down into a norm, at least to drop down to wherever it is going to go before beginning to climb. My preference per the encouragement of a banker friend is to seek out stocks with at least a five year history of not only strong share price performance but also of course a solid dividend payout history.

    • @SpeakerBuilder
      @SpeakerBuilder Před 2 měsíci

      The rejection of of a stock that pays return of capital as part of a dividend payment may reflect a misunderstanding. ROC does NOT mean you are getting some of your stock back, as you retain the same number of shares. Instead, it means your cost basis is reduced. So you pay no taxes on any ROC payments now, and whenever you sell your shares, you pay taxes on that amount later on. But the good news is you get some of the capital now that you can reinvest and increase you dividend payments by owning more shares. When comparing a lower dividend paying stock that does not pay ROC to a higher yielding stock that pays the increased difference of its dividend in ROC payments, the latter is preferred. I watched a video some time ago from a guy who railed against ROC as a total scam, until I did something really amazing: I stopped and actually THOUGHT about it.

    • @SpeakerBuilder
      @SpeakerBuilder Před 2 měsíci

      As Alan points out, the idea of these high dividend yielding stocks is to enjoy the dividend payments and not worry about the share price. I am investing in the market exclusively for dividend payments and am not concerned at all with capital appreciation as a strategy, which to me is far too unreliable in the market. If I want capital appreciation, I'll look at other hard assets with far more stable performance.

    Sold my QYLD about one month ago along with other yield producing ETF's. One advantage for QYLD is its' price is stable. One disadvantage is if you hold 1000's of shares a drop cloud mean a drop in the thousands. ( a 10,000 share loss of one point is a paper loss of $10,000) Another reason is that some ETF's like PHD yield as much with out the risk. Now with the issue of MaxYield ETF's a different picture emerges. True there is market risk in everything! I rode 1000 CONY from 20 to 27 and collected about 80% along the way.

I think we are the kind which focuses on CASHFLOW, Yields, Diversification and risk management, hence I'd never sell any of my holdings and I haven't, why would I kill my chickens? they're giving me perfectly fine eggs and my farm keeps growing and growing. Capital Gains? seriously? our stock is supposed to stay mostly flat lol, they're definitely not Tesla or anything like that, just focus on keeping your yield healthy and strong, your portfolio well diversified and keep getting more and more dollars, that's it, there's no science to it.

    With any stock you want to do better than average and the SP500 (SPY ETF) can be used as average. Also, total return should be used and not just dividends. Have you ever compared any stocks to the SPY for total returns? I look at QYLD compared to the SPY and invested the same amount in both at the beginning of each year for the last 10 years and sold it at the end of 2023. In those 10 cases the SPY out preformed QYLD every year whether the dividends were withdrawn or reinvested. I know that past performance does not predict the future but other methods may not as well. Just look at a stock chart (AZO - long term chart 20 years) and it should be going for lower left to upper right.

QQQI confuses me a bit, as I see people talking about the 14% yield, but when I examine the stock through my brokerage it only shows as having a dividend of 2.34% currently which is a far cry from the mentioned 14%, I am sure this is a case of me misunderstanding how these things pay out or aggregate their value. That's the TTM (trailing twelve month) yield. The ETF hasn't existed for twelve months. Annualizing the yield the ETF has had for it's first couple months of existence would get you around a 14% yield. But, there's no guarantee the next 10 months payout the same as the first two have, of course. The 14% is just an educated guess.

QYLD I made money on, and I kept JEPI since it's the only one of these ETFs that is doing well in terms of stock price in my portfolio. • @jaypaladin-havesmartswilll5508

    If you bought QYLD in the Fall of 2022 or some other previous down year, then QYLD is a long term keeper. I sold because I bought too much before the 2022 Fall decline. The big plus if QQQI holds true long term is the tax efficiency and more upside gain. We will see about the limited downside vs QYLD.

      ...sold my YieldMax at a loss in December. Focused instead on writing my own options contracts...running "the wheel" on a few stocks (BABA, TSLA, COIN, MARA) & strategically timed, ~weekly iron condors on SPY & QQQ. Working out much better for me, I can realize similar yields without the downside sensitivity that is inherent in the YM funds.

    Been saying this since 2020, I dunno why Global X didn't see the competition coming. They should've swallowed their pride and cut their fees. When your strategy is as simple as ATM theres no excuse to have 0.60% expense ratio that greed is probably starting to feel pretty painful for them on their CC funds given how much more you get out of sone of these for the same or lower expense ratio.
