So many years later, I think it’s safe now to reveal that the gentleman on Harry’s left who lent him one of the fives is a wonderful magician and magic historian named Mike Caveney. They started together in the Long Beach Mystics and later in the Magic Castle Juniors as teens. I can tell you Mike has nothing to do with the trick. He’s just there so Harry can abuse him without risking getting a punch in the face. The jokes had to work - this was being taped for TV.

I was born and raised in the PNW. Going into Seattle we always went to the wharf and saw the flying fish. I went and showed my girlfriend - wife now - the steps we always took down there and showed her the magic shop and specifically pointed at the pic of Harry and the owner... we were the only ones in the shop, as it was closing time... and we talked to the owner a bit and told him the story.. he smiled and yelled for Harry to come out, he did... he was in town and stopping by to see his old friend. Shook his hand introduced him to my girlfriend and thanked him for the laughs on the show.. he said what about the magic?? I said, you do magic?? the shop owner started to laugh and said see never thought you were good at it... Harry laughed and said I like you kid.. we wished him a good night... Harry was an amazing guy... and amazing at magic.
So... he passed away in his sleep and his wife woke up and thought that Harry needed more sleep so she left the room and went about her day...she realized he was gone when she came back in the evening and he was still in bed....so when you think about it....he played "alive".
