I do think Fearow needs to keep some of it's sharp edges, because it fits really well with the pokemon's attitude. It's very bold, aggressive and territorial and I think the roundness makes him feel a bit more tame and less menacing. Additional colour definitely is a good thing for fearow because he loos to bland otherwise.
Behomie I remember being fucking wild after evolving a spearow into a fearow thinking it was a one shot god with no mercy only to find out they’re so common that you can have a full team and get sweeped by a fucking abra
@@lmaobox4068 yeah but besides the legendaries, in Gen 1 the only actually good flying pokemon was fearow. the pidgey line sucked hard.
@@orangerightgold7512 so true
@@orangerightgold7512 dodrio is the best flying normal in all of gen I and probably up until staraptor in gen IV, base 110 speed and 100 attack outspeed the other birds and hit harder + tri-attack was physical and was pretty tough
@@Legogreens Dodrio was flying? Man the whole time I thought it was just normal.
I could honestly see that Hypno design as a mega hypno
I would pay good money for that
it's so good.
Even an evolution, it looks amazing
Well since Megas no longer exist, I guess it’ll just be Gigantamax Hypno
Brainfart's Channel I guess, I personally don’t feel that the design in particular would work well for a gigantimax. Megas seem to make (or at least used to make) a Pokémon seem more battle ready and sleek, while gigantimax seems to be going for a clunky Godzilla type of deal.
Okok but what if you did this in reverse?
Gen 7 in gen 1's style
NOW that's an idea
This x100
this is the real pokemon
They'd probably make it look like crap and not do the original artist's style justice. Only 1 out of 3 in this video looks decent, imo.
I actually might subscribe just because this is top comment
I didn't really notice that Gen 1 was made at the Angry Anime Period.
I think 90% of all gen 1 Pokemon should have the ability Intimidate
The sprites were designed first, over a period of ~5 years (1990~1995). Sugimori then drew up artwork for them once everything was finalized.
However, another thing to keep in mind is his style changed drastically over that period. The Quinty comics are a good way to observe how it changed over that period.
Look at gen 1 artwork and the early pocket Monsters and adventures manga. Early Pokemons art is most inspired by Dragonball and Dr Slump (first Pokemon manga is a straight up Dr Slump style gag manga)
I too find Butterfree intimidating
@@victorino28 same, butterfree litteraly made me shit my pants the first time I saw it
Magikarp is really intimidating
The Hypno redesign is really good! It's got really spooky witch doctor vibes. The only thing I'd change about it is to give it more tapir-like features, since Hypno and Drowzee are based on the Baku yōkai.
Some of the newer Pokémon tend to draw directly from actual animals; Toucannon and Komala for example look very similar to the animals they're based on
Shak Pherze I was considering re-designing Drowzee too, but honestly I feel like Drowzee has a more contemporary design because it draws so much from tapirs and the Baku (I really like drowzee and hypno)
@@Subjectively Yeah that's fine ☺️
I agree this design is my favorite of the video
'~' >~< Ughh..my ambivalence is b/c I wonder how it change 'creepypasta' takes on Hypno.
That hypno design makes me like hypno
Loving the redesign for Hypno, looks like it could be a Psychic/Ghost type because of its creepiness.
James Meek I was thinking the same thing! Maybe Psychic/Dark
Yeah because if it was psy/ghost it would be hella weak to dark type
Mega Hypno
Amnesia Dark if it’s psychic dark it’s super weak to bug.
He reminds me of plague knight from shovel Knight lol, maybe a psychic/poison type would be a good one since plague knight was all about poison potions and shit lol
To be honest I would go more sharp and defined with Fearow, instead mellowing it down.
The real fearow looks way better. Go back to school hun.
That's your ideal vision but theirs is a more realistic vision
Yeah, her version just looks like Trumbeak.
The thing about fearow is
that it is that sharp
That's just its thing
It isn't mellowed down, it's just more cartoonish guess what the gen 7 style. What they did makes sense idk if you even understood the purpose of this
Removing fearow's angularity kinda makes it just another bird. The pointiness is what made it memorable, and making it look 'cuter' and more approachable goes against its design point of 'evil version of Pidgeot'.
Just seen Dewgong: the belly seems too cluttered, and that was after you said that Gen 1 was the one adding random parts. I think just some coloured bands, instead of the three 'eyes' and then a band, would be less convuluted. Hypno's pretty awesome, though.
@Pokémon & FF fan if it didn't have a nose, it wouldn't come across that it's a *stylised* version of a tapir. Drowzy is the basic animal, new Hypno is the evolved and diversified version of it.
@Pokémon & FF fan hypno already had a bulbous nose. I don't see why this nose is any worse- it looks less bulbous now.
@Pokémon & FF fan I know tapir's trunks are short. Hypno's nose is a large human nose, not a trunk, so the pointy beak is a step up in my opinion as it's slightly more menacing.
I agree
bruh, Fearow is ugly. The redesign was, yes, sort of cuter, but less ugly.
I don’t know about anybody else but I don’t think Dewgong’s eyes needed to be changed those eyes are adorable!
You have to chuckle at them spending most of the video dunking on all the "angry eyes" that many of the Gen 1 pokemon sport, only to highlight one of the few which do not, and proceed to shit on that as well.
J.Samuel Waters unpopular opinion but I think the added complexity to the newer gen makes them look generic. It also
Makes it more cartoony and less tangible. Some have features with no real life reference. I think the designs peaked in the second generation and then they slowly started adding more details because they were running out of animals to reference and still look different to other Pokémon.
@@dantan1249 creative designs ruined the realism of my monster collecting RPG 🤬
The Hypno design is really great. It kinda looks like it could be an evolution. I really like the hair and the way it's posed.
It's like the eyes are made to hypnotize as well.
The Hypno design is absolutely amazing, but I feel like the other 2 redesigns failed to achieve the feeling the original designs have. Fearow is supposed to look very aggressive and Dewgong is meant to look majestic rather than derpy. Still a great video!
I’m sorry bu OG Dewgong is not majestic at all
Sir and/or madame and/or m’theydy, in what piece of reality is Seel or Dewgong in any way, shape, or form majestic? The redesign is more majestic than a blobfish, which Dewgong kinda failed at.
@@bluepearl4624 "meant to look"
The Dewgong redesign looks more majestic than the original honestly. 😂
No I agree with you, Dewgong was THAT Sea Lion. The redesign was too much, gen 1 so iconic for that minimalism in design tho; it was very less is more back then. And all Fearow needed was a change or addiction to its color scheme, cuz the design is IT like you said ‘meant to look aggressive’ and sharp. The hypno made for a great thumbnail cuz it was the only design I liked and could see happening.
6:44 I could totally see this as a Alola version of Hypno
I love the simplicity of the early designs, it’s really fun trying to picture what they would look like if they were designed now or if a Pokémon with a similar design idea came out now how they would differ.
I’m in love with Hypno’s redesign and I think it speaks the most to gen 7 out of all of them. The colors and shapes blend so well together into what I believe is a very convincing Pokémon redesign.
The other two I think are nice, but do have some critiques on..
The Dewgong one is definitely my second favorite and I really love the color scheme, it gives it a very Arctic feel, as well as the neck ruff and the round teeth.
The flippers I felt were a little lazily designed and could be longer and have more exaggerated elements to them. The grey streak across the flipper I thought detracted from the overall design as it was very distracting and didn’t flow well into any other part of the pattern.
I personally would’ve liked to see fully grey flippers with a grey back, but that’s just me. I like the incorporation of the spots, but find the diamond shape on the stomach to be detracting due to the clash of jagged edges and roundness.
The Fearow design, I really love the neck ruff and the overall colors, but I think by making him too round a lot has been taken away from his original design that could have been incorporated into a gen 7 design. The neck in particular is still iconic and didn’t have to be rounded out completely. I felt a lot of Fearow’s elements were reminiscent of a vulture and all of those elements were taken away in its redesign and replaced with a more turkey-like bird
Overall, you guys did great and I appreciate you taking the time to reimagine these awesome Pokémon!
I'm getting some Hyness vibes from Kirby Star Allies with the Hypno redesign.
Good, so I’m not the only one.
Same
Same
Same, the first thing I thought when I saw the thumbnail was "Why does Hypno look like Hyness?"
Ok hear me out.
Drowzee-Hypno- Hyness(design from this vid)
Just realised that Hypno looks like mr burns
Freako lol he does
I love the old rendering style. When you put up the old picture of Hypno I got so nostalgic.
The Hypno redesign is really strong. Maybe it's nostalgia but there's something uncanny about the original that I appreciate, and I'm not sure I'd ever replace it if given the chance. But the one you drew is real cool also. It's got more energy for sure.
Part of the point of Dewgong was missed, hes supposed to look like a fountain in his shape. thats why his fins look like waves.
Wait, he is?
I like the redesigned deegong, but the fin seemed like a fish fin to me as in how it just moves up and down only
@@Walter-fc3uq the fishes moves the fin right to left, mammals like dolphins moves up and down
still bland af
I love the hypno design, it has Witch Doctor vibes and I would definitely use that pokemon if it was like a real Alolan form of Hypno in the games. Would make a cool Ghost/Psychic or Dark/Psychic type
I love that dewgong redesign. You did a really great job of bringing new life into classic designs.
Rikard Gopaul Jane’s was my favorite!
@easton goode yeah it has garurumon vibes
It really invokes inuit vibes with me
The designs on the belly are overkill. Simplicity is perfection
SanJose408Alex yeah, just some bands instead, and it would be perfect!
Could you do the exact contrary, please? Drawing gen 7 (or 8 by now) in gen 1 style?
It's like Fearow was shrieking at pidgeot and ash "NO, DON'T KILL ME! IM HO-OH!!!"
Enjoyed all three redesigns but I'm in love with that Hypno. It's stellar.
I like the more sharp and angular style of the old Pokemon the modern Pokemon styles looks cool but at the same time, I don't like it when some of them look overly cutesy
Not only that, but humanizing all pokemon... Why do new pokemon look like human beings? ;;
@@zweks I mean there were humanoid pokémon in the previous generations, too.
@@Shiranova yeah, but not every single pokemon looks like a human being, take Gen 6 and Gen 7, both Gen starters are humanoid and not only that, 2 of them are sort of gender oriented the only neutral humanoid pokemon are chespin and rowlets finals
I miss having monsters as companions instead of flurries :(
@@zweks The only pokemon that look remotely human at the top of my head are the Gardevoir family and the Gothitelle family, and *MAYBE* the Conkeldurr line, Sawk or Throh but that's about it.
Just because a pokemon is bipedal doesn't mean its humanoid.
There's also Mr. Mime and Jynx, Kanto pokemon, so your argument completely falls apart.
@@zweks Chesnaught doesn't look neutral at all.
holy shit this is cool
Fearow redesign looks cuter, which to me doesn't fit what I think Fearow is supposed to be. Also, that iconic neck I think should not be removed.
Dewgong redesign looks better, more dugong, though I could say the tummy design is kinda.....eh. Like either it's too much or it needs more. Still, good job :) He still looks cute
Now the Hypno redesign, that is the best of the three :D good job at making the hypnotism theme be carried out perfectly. Especially liking the eyes which looks similar to the pendulum. Also, the redesign have the best artwork, like it was actually a real Pokemon :D
I spend a lot of time on CZcams but I have never seen a video like this. Having so many artists discussing a topic is amazing. I really feel part of the conversation.
The Hypno re-design definitely gives me vibes of Lord Hyness from Kirby Star Allies! Love it!
THE HYPNO LOOKS SO ACCURATE
I really really really like the Hypno redesign. It’s got a bit of a witch doctor design, and those multi-ringed hypnotic eyes are perfect for him
ok how is this Hypno even more horrifying than the original?
Probably because it looks like it’s going to hypnotise you into a permanent paralysis while keeping your mind intact so it can feed on your terror and despair as sustenance until your body gives out from a severe nervous breakdown and lack of sustenance for an extended amount of time.
dogue Raevian
...I was just gonna say it had freaky eyes, but...th-that works too.
1:36 There are definitely not "filler" Pokémon in Gen I. A lot of Gen II Pokémon had already been designed during Gen I, but didn't fit in the gameboy cartridge's limited storage space and had to be held back until Gold and Silver.
they made too much filler and had to cut some
@@oi23origin then wouldn't it make more sense to keep the good designs over the filler ones? It makes no sense to keep muk over scizor for example if they cut only "filler pokemon".
Oi27 meh. I like that some Pokémon were meh and others were special. It made it more real world. Revealing legendary Pokémon was more special. Pokémon has become overdesigned and convoluted.
for hypno, the ears really doooont make any sense? if they wanted him to have ears, they should have kept with the theme of tapir. i really love all these redesigns, they're so wonderful. and every time i watch yalls videos, i feel like im learning so much about character design, and it feels good!! so thanks for bein cool.
do yall have a discord group?
I love the ears of Hypno as it makes it stand out like a scarecrow, but it's alive! O_O
amaterasudreaming how could yall say it doesnt make any sense and then think that the new ones make any more sense?
Some Tapir have pointed ears, others have rounded ones.
hypno is fantastic, fearow is a little meh but ok
Imagine galarian hypno
*when Dewgong is your favorite pokemon of all time*

One of my biggest concerns about newer Pokémon design is that a lot of the designs are very busy. If we look at Primarina vs Dewgong, Primarina looks less like a candid picture of a living creature and more like a seal that someone dressed as a mermaid. Dewgong isn't the most interesting design, but I also think it's true that simply adding more stuff to a design (like Primarina) doesn't necessarily make it more interesting. In fact, one of my favorite designs is Nidoking. If you look at Nidoking he isn't a super complex design and yet he is, imo, pretty interesting. If you look at him, you don't have an immediate idea in your head of exactly what he is and yet his design is iconic and striking. I love Pokémon who have that element of "je ne sais quoi" about them. I think that is one of the elements that makes a Pokémon design great.
Edit: I actually think that the Hypno redesign here really keeps that mystery element alive and that's why i think it's such a great redesign.
I don't think Prima's design is busy honestly, I find it pretty simple actually. Nidoking does look sick though
@@librathebeautifulwarmonk1283 Nidoking for me looks a bit ugly. I mean, the Shiny makes it... Kind Of better, but it's still eh. Primarina is great though.
Libra The beautiful War Monk primarina is very busy and doesn’t look like anything . Bunch of random details that make it not seem like a species of Pokémon but and individual character
I love how the Dewgong redesign looked more of an “Inuit” design which is just awesome
The Hypno redesign is my favorite, it honestly looks like it could legit be in a new gen!
The re-deaigned hypno looks so much better than the original, It looks so menacing and it actually looks like it could be a animal rather than a small weird old man painted yellow. I just think the pokemon in general look much better.
No
Hypno based of the Japanese “Baku” a Elephant/Tiger dream eating yokai
You made hypno look BEAST!
"The new gens don't just throw in random traits"
Shows a picture of primarina, completely covered with useless decorations.
Who’s to say it’s useless?
i think there’s a difference between “useless” and “random/unfitting”
like, primarina having beads and a starfish thing in its hair probably isn’t going to serve any purpose survival-wise, but it fits the overall aesthetic the designers were going for. then there’s “koi fish, but with a horn because ??” and “dugong, but with a horn because ??”
Yeah like mermaids
That hypno design is sick. my only complaint is I wish the nose was more tapir-like, like drowzee's is
Hypno is a lemon goblin
Hypno's new design is awesome! I think liked the old fearow a little bit more though
I LOVE the new hypno design, love absolutely everything about it
If Hypno looked like that it would go from one of my most hated Pokémon to one of my favorites
These designs are very clean!
That Hypno one looks like Hyness from Kirby Star Allies
Wow that dewgon looks GREAT. i would love to have that on my team!
I actually love the watercoloured art of gen 1. It's so interesting because it's not as clean as the new designs coloration
I absolutely love the hypno redesign. It’s whole look screams “hypnosis” meanwhile the original, if you don’t show his pendulum, you would have no idea.
Muk is my son and you have destroyed his self-esteem

Have you guys ever considered filming the painting process? I'm not sure what your workflow is exactly, or even if your current setup allows for it. But a lot of people, I think, would find it interesting to not only see the final designs but how you arrived there. One of my favorite videos on this channel was the "How to Draw in the Pokemon Style" video. Now, not every video has to go to such detail. But I think its an interesting angle that people would find interesting. It would also probably save on editing time!
CinderBlock331 we have a hard time recording the software we use to draw- it’s on an iPad. But we want to figure it out, because you’re totally right!
@@Subjectively Thats totally fair, and also really good news! I'll be waiting in anticipation!
No doubt about it! Limitation is the mother of all invention!
There's a charm to the simplistic style of Gen 1 that is lost on later gens and that make them stand out. Most of the newer gens Pokemon feel like can fit among other styles of monsters like in Digimon, Monster Rancher, Yokai-Watch, etc.
i just love this so much... you can see the love and care put into these designs and i would just like to like... let you know how much i appreciate it
_The simplicity of gen 1 designs are superior._
No they're not.
Struggling rn. Hypno's redesign reminds me of something from Zelda I think? Crazy eyes, long nose, and a white dress? Something like that.
Jessica Spurr I think I might know what your talking about. Is it those weird bird wizards from Wind Waker?
@@gizmogamer8502 Yes! You're right! Thank you. I just looked it up, they're called Wizzrobes. :D

Both pikachu illustrations ares from gen 1. The second is from the Pokemon Yellow for GBC
even if it's not, its a really old illustration, its not new
it might as well be from the Trading Cards, but its old. Its definitely ans old drawing from the 90's or, at max 2002.
Ur right
wow, that hypno redesign is amazing
Nostalgia be damned! Your Hypno looks way BETTER than the original!
These were cool! Enjoyed the discussions on the designs and the "Gen 1" elements, hadn't really thought about some of those similarities before

Hypno:* Lord Hyness intensifies *
Wow that Hypno looks amazing and I like it 100 times more than the original
Gen 2 I loved the most. Always found 1-2 to be the most intimidating Pokemon and it’s not over-done with designs or pretty. They were designed just to fight.
agreed
Your Hypno design would legit make me love that pokemon, it is so unique and really cool!
I'd really love to see you guys do the reverse! That is, redesign recent Pokemon in the Gen 1 style.
When you design a bird called Fearow and make it look colorful and cute instead making it look intimidating fierce bird that's going to horn drill your face like the name implies it to be.
That Hypno would be amazing as a Tapu Lele design!
Great video, guys! I really like your ideas for the redesigns. Hopefully we will get more regional variants to update old favourites
Fearrow: I enjoy everything though the eyes don’t really feel like “final bird” I’d say an eyes like toucanon or talon flame would work especially since it’s a fear sparrow.
Hypno: hmm it’s...interesting for its inspiration I think it’s got the ears since it’s pre evo is based on a tappir, I kinda would say I would like to see a redone drowsee to match since this hypno doesn’t really fit being an evo to the normal drowsee, one thing I would’ve added is maybe add some reference to drowsees brown stuff that randomly is removed idk why
Dewgong: again with the last I feel it needs a redone seel since the pre looks extremely plain compared to it. Also the colors are interesting since the scheme works for its typing, tho I’m curious why the teeth are yellow? It feels like an addition I still am a bit confused.
These are great. You definitely improved these pokemon (even though you said that’s not what you were doing). I especially loved the hypno. I really wish these were in game, I’d use them all. Nice vid👍
The og designs of hypno and drowzee are based on tapir ( the weird nosey bit) , the new design is cool but I wish if it could retain the old essential features as well
Baby geese are called goslings. So cute! But then they turn into geese..
Hypno's re-design is awesome! It looks like it could be his evolution when you trade it holding an item in the same way Magmar and Electabuzz evolve. Like a "Pendulum" item or something like that.
These designs are so good. Make a video on editting videos, etc etc. Basically how you make videos.
RetroCrow huh, I can’t believe we haven’t thought of that yet. We’ll have to do that!
@@Subjectively Yay!
DO IT IN REVERSE THAT WOULD BE SO COOL!!
I’m through my first watch of it and when they said something about Fearow’s and Ho-oh’s design, the way it’s worded makes me think they didn’t know that Pokemon are designed generations in advance and that Ho-oh and Fearow existed simultaneously, somewhat evidenced by Ho-oh’s iconic appearance in the first episode of the anime ever, before Fearow was seen in the anime
All of your redesigns are so good! Tbh not alot of artists that are redesigning old mons put as much thought into it like you all do.
Re-designid pokemon as digimon
This video has a lot of good points and analysis. The comparisons of the times and the tech is spot on. The redesigns are reallt cool! This was a great video!
dewgong was my 1st pokemon and is my fave bc of nostalgia so seein dewgong made my day!! its so nice when ppl give him some love tysm 4 includin him!!
I don't hate Gen 1. In fact, I love all generations. Each generation kind of has it's own "flavor" to it. You can see Pokemon's art style change each generation.
Gen 1 was, imo, always in need of an update though. They'll never do it, because there's already been too many games with Gen 1 Pokemon in them, but I mean, look at it. So many of the monsters were just... so similar. Nidoking, Rhydon, Charizard, Khangaskan, Scyther... They all just have that "Lumpy-looking godzilla knockoff" look to them. There's not really much that separates them from each other, let alone other video games with unique "Pokemon-esque" monsters. You can argue against this fact all you want, but companies usually refine their skills and increase quality as they grow more and more successful, and Pokemon designs at the very LEAST have gotten more "refined". If that's a good or bad thing, that's up to you.
I get the hate of other gens though. Not everyone wanted Pokemon to change. Some wanted them to stick with the simplistic designs of Gen 1 forever. And I'm not saying the newer ones are any better or worse, just that they clearly had more thought put into them. I remember somewhere someone from Nintendo said Pokemon was never even intended to be such a huge series. It was only after Gen 2 they realized they hit a gold mine, and thus bumped up their quality way more.
Kangaskhan is my fav gen 1 pokemon
No, the simple designs are more appealing than the cluttered mess most pokemon are in more current gens.
@@Izzmonster
Gen 1 had cluttered designs. Venesaur is pretty cluttered. Ryhorn and Rhydon are just... 100's of sheets of rock layered over each other... honestly, Rhyperior is less cluttered then them lol.
And likewise leater gens have some very simple designs. All up to taste really.
@@bugjams Venosaur is not cluttered. The flower on it's back is more detailed. Cluttered is like that seal mermaid thing with starfish and pearls and a thousand other things stuck to it. Rhyhorn is one of the most simple designs and Rhydon isn't cluttered wtf are you talking about? Clutter is adding a bunch of unnecessary detail.
@@Izzmonster
Why does more things = bad? They're both perfectly fine designs.
I love that Hypno redesign! It looks more like a Psychic-type and it conveys its sinister look at lot better without being just plain creepy
The further we go in generations, the moor unique and somewhat eerie the designs get! And I’m all for it!
6:46 bro that's not Hypno, that's Hyness from Kirby Star Allies

I know. These Gen 7 be looking weird AF. I remember a time when pokemon looked simple. Lol
Simple and _boring_ is the problem. Haunter is simple but not boring but...Dewgong is just meh.
Gen 7 pokemon look pretty good imo. Simple doesn't always mean superior
And then you have Meganium lmao
{coughElectrodecough}
@@shadracer2838 You're boring
Maybe the opposite would be cool too. Gen 7 Pokémon drawn in the classic style
But these kinda look like mega evolutions
I love that dewgong that’s a massive improvement
There were 190 pokemon planned for gen 1, but they had to cut because of the limitations. So they didn't make "filler pokemon to get to the 150 mark", that's for sure.
Fearow was definitely not a last minute Pokémon. In fact, it was the second bird Pokémon to be created, going by the index numbers (the first being Spearow).
Index number isn't order of creation though, Rhydon was the first pokemon created/designed and it isn't #1 on the index.
