I don't have either and I don't think I will buy them, but the perfect deck would be a mix of both.
I love (most) changes and the added diversity (Only real exception here is the empress. I vibe more with the first one)
But I don't like the rainbow leafing and prefer the gold. I also generally prefer the warmer slightly more muted colours of the first one in the cards that have only changed in that aspect.

The Luma edition has made good changes in the major arcana. One of the standout changes in the minors is the 8 of wands, love the woman riding on horse back in the Luna edition. I wish they had done more interesting changes like this in the minors. Still beautiful though thanks for the flip through 🙏🌻😊

Darn. I had seen the original many times and looked at it like "that is a pretty deck, I like it!" but I never quite put it in my shopping list because something didn't click. But I think that after the comparison, I will add the Luna Edition to my wanted list. xD Not only the diversity that people have mentioned, but I like the small color scheme changes, the redraws, and seeing how some of the cards got little more contrast to their backgrounds. The original is so lovely and there are some cards and such I prefer over the Luna edition (like, I do like the few cards with masked characted with their masks unfoiled like in the original) but as a whole, I feel much more drawn to it. Plus I like the Luna's back more too! That said, I think they are both glorious decks, so lovely.

I have the original numbered deck, though quite quickly stopped using it, it just became pretty images. I also fell for the Fyodor Pavlov Tarot, a quite inclusive deck, but again far too pretty. I have still to learn that pretty pictures don't equal deeper meaning! I am learning, and now prefer tarot decks that have a challenge just learning their use, be it the very xtian inspired Cathar Tarot, or the Witches Wisdom Tarot, which really challenges me as everything about this deck is different. The one deck that a friend introduced me to, Fifth Spirit Tarot, took me a short while to see past the rather 'simple' line drawing style, and has become a firm favourite.
I am not sure whether i will acquire this Luna deck by Matt Hughes

I got goosebumps looking at this. Thank you so much for doing this comparison.
The Illuminated deck has always been one of mu favorites and one of my go to for my readings buy this Luna Version feels so powerful, the new holo-foiling give me this “the cards are really alive” sensation that excites me to get one. The only thing I don’t like at all is the lack of reds and the abundance of purple, I know is like, the theme of the decl, this purple-blue/night palette but the red and the purple are so important to me on mu readings that I find it quite distracting.
Aaaand, omg that Heriophant card, god, what did Mattew did to my favorite card ever. 😢 i really don’t connect to the new one, I’ll need to try it and we will see but… idk, that card really goes straight to my heart and i don’t like the new one at all. unu

I wouldn't expect diversity from the original RWS or from Mucha's artwork since those works are about 100 years old and reflect a certain context, but I do expect it in 2023. It's a globalized world, tarot reaches many different countries and cultures. I don't expect it from every deck, but it's very refreshing when you see a genuine effort.

    • @missnataliedavis
      @missnataliedavis Před rokem +5

Changing the cards messed up the whole style of the art. You're not supposed to modernize old art. It has its style for a reason, and when you go throwing modernized images in there, it messes it up. You want the creator to change an entire art style? So that you folks can feel more comfortable? Let's just be happy that we have two versions, and that thankfully the original at least goes with the theme intended. And at least with the original deck the creator took the time to make beautiful images that flow together. Because of the fact that so many people whined and cried, he haphazardly through some extra cards in the Luna and deepened a few skin tones. But as you can clearly see, it doesn't even flow the same. None of the images in the new deck even look like they fit the same art style. And that is the point. Art nouveau is meant to be looked at as basically mannequins, generic representations of human beings. And if people can't get past images on a card because of what the image looks like physically, then they have no business reading cards if they can't get past that and get to a deeper meaning.

There are things I like about both. I recently got the Luna edition.
I feel like the original feels softer with the warmer lines and the fact that it seems to keep with nouveau themes like the more organic backs and and more nature inspired details.
For the Luna I really like the diversity. There's a few new cards that have a beautiful punch and flow with the already established parts of the deck, the four of swards, king of swards and empress for example.
Personal taste, i would've liked the foiling to be silver and for some of the changes to feel more like they're organic. With the darker line work, rainbow foiling and some of the clouds coming off as ominous, the newer deck feels harsher. I don't think it's supposed to. I mean I can see the darker pallet as it's a night (lunar) tarot. I know creating anything is hard work and appreciate what went into them.
I'm happy to have both decks

However, from an aesthetic standpoint, if the cards are intended for everyone, it's nice to see a diverse representation that includes all people.

I never once connected with the original version. it’s artistic, it’s uniform but i feel nothing so i never bought it. but the Luna version had more “life” in it. its energy is strong, it’s alive and definitely doesnt feel like a bunch of cards with some art on it. it definetly has an energy that I can work with in my readings. That is why I bought it. some people need to understand that people connect with decks in different ways and we must respect that. not everything has to be political.

Matt Hughes is a skilled artist but wasnt particularly knowledgable about tarot, i felt this led to a disconnect. The Luna edition has more life and vibrancyy overall. The diversity is a wecome upgrade. Because the new edition is modernized. The old deck is based on an art style which wasn't meant to highlight diversity, body shapes, etc. It is a generic representation of the the human form. The Luna deck completely messed up the flow of the art nouveau in the original. What people don't understand is that you can't modernize a style of art that is hundreds of years old and meant to look the way it does for a reason. What next, people are going to start crying about all of the famous works of art because they depict a certain skin color or body size? Ethereal Visions is just a deck based on an old art style. But the new updated art in the Luna version doesn't flow and it was never meant to. I can't believe so many people are crying about an art style as though they are being discriminated against. Just enjoy both decks. And understand that the original is just meant to represent basically mannequins. We aren't supposed to be looking at the fact that they are pale, because they're actually just representations of the human form.

I worked with it tonight, for the first time. I was kind of worried about damaging the silver foiling. How has it been holding up for you? And the original? Thanks for sharing.

@@bm.6349 "You guys are so easy to market to" ? You are rude and presumptuous. I don't know if by calling me one of "you guys", you mean to suggest a lack of intelligence or what. Here's my suggestion: you don't know me. You don't get to decide what's worthy racial representation in a deck of cards for anyone except yourself.

Love them both. I have to get the Luna now that I have the Ethereal. Sucks that they couldn’t make the original diverse of people or really sucks that they didn’t even notice it in the first place (which is why diversity is so important), business move or not, using race for profit isn’t cool. Hopefully the next deck will be an improvement of both decks and so on from here on out 😊

The Luna Edition has it all ! Diversity, stronger color saturation that makes the images come alive, color changes that complement that beautiful rainbow foiling , it has the look of an expensive indie deck. I loved the art nouveau style of the deck, but the Ethereal Visions Illuminated just seemed to be lacking something to me, so I hadn't purchased it, there was always something else I liked better. I was waiting for a walk through of the Luna. And it met my expectations and more ! No brainier on this one ! It's at the top of my list ! Thanks for sharing

The new version just ticks all of the boxes, holo foil, more diverse representation, more vibrant images and more purple and blue hues versus red / brown hues.
The original is pretty, but definitely a much needed improvement on the new.

I’m a POC, I honestly can’t understand why anyone would make an artist feel bad for not including diversity. Art is art. I personally don’t like decks full of diversity. I avoid them. Tarot has a very specific European heritage. I can’t stand modern decks- I don’t want to see everyday people in tarot because for me tarot is escapism and more mystical. I’ll take a fantasy deck over a real life one any day. That might just be me though. I’ve noticed in this deck, the new cards artwork looks more well defined, the new ones feel like add ins and don’t match the rest of the artwork- it’s very subtle but stands out to me. I actually don’t know how I feel about the new one. I never bought the first one because although pretty, I found the colours too muted. The new one the colours pop more but there are some cards I now dislike (because of diversity changes), but others that I like more. I feel bad for tarot right now, on the one hand the massive resurgence and almost mainstream level interest in new decks is great for deck collectors and choice but the whole unwritten rules of diversity and inclusion have also cast a shadow on art and artists. The only decks that should focus on diversity and inclusion are modern ones since they are representing the everyday. And also cultural specific ones. Ethereal Visions was never a ‘modern’ deck in artwork. So it should be allowed to have its place without POC and LGBTQ + casting their shadow over it.

"casting their shadow" oop 🫢 no one wants to say it but thats exactly what those groups do don't they?
I do however think some of the responsibility lies with the artists though. If an artist genuinely wants to make a diverse deck hey more power to them but a LOT of artists just inject forced diversity into their decks to appease the angry masses and imo it makes the problem worse because they've learned that if they yell enough about it they'll get what they want (this deck here is a perfect example). More artists need to put their foot down and say "NO, actually my art does not need to contain one of literally every single possible type of person. If you don't like it shop elsewhere".

@@biitchstixI agree with you here, but I also think it’s tricky. I’ve seen well known CZcamsrs who have thousands of followers post videos on why they will never buy decks without diversity. I’ve seen instagram accounts focused on reviewing decks with a rating system that penalises decks without diversity and inclusion which is then quoted by famous CZcamsrs as a ‘beware’ decks section. So I do agree, but I also understand if they don’t want to speak up as ‘cancel’ culture is very much alive right now. Look what happened to J K Rowling for speaking on menstruation and sharing toilets with trans. She’s been somewhat erased from her own creation. The Harry Potter reunion didn’t even include her.
It’s also crazy to me that in the last few weeks, I’ve witnessed calls by tarot readers and witches alike to cancel any business offering readings who haven’t spoken out in support of Palestine and ‘chose to remain silent’. This is terrifying on a whole new level. I’m brown and Muslim so if you saw me in person you’d guess who I support, but I’ve kept politics off my business social media pages. I would be boycotted because a few white tarot readers and witches spoke to their followers and said don’t give them your money. Not a single Palestinian business has asked for its patrons to do the same. Sorry for the digression there but what is going on???
I miss the old days when tarot was simple more than ever. 😔

I remember when this all started a few years back, they hashtag #TarotSoWhite became a huge thing in the social media community and popular tarot channels all jumped in on it to virtue signal. It all felt so artificial and like an attention grab.
Benebell Wenn wrote a really good blog post on her thoughts about it and how she would never want to see artists forced to create things that don’t necessarily feel natural to them or their cultural experience, and how that includes people who are of European heritage.
It always felt silly to me because Tarot is a part of European culture, it began in Italy hundreds of years ago and the RWS and Thoth systems were created by European practitioners. It’s not surprising at all that artwork in decks would reflect that.
Creators shouldn’t be cancelled or criticized for making decks that are “too white”. They should be allowed to create art that feels authentic to them just like anyone else.
For me, super diverse decks like this Luna edition feel forced to me and they distract me because I can feel the inauthenticity of the art. Sometimes it’s done well but often it’s just someone trying to appease consumers who make everything about race.
We should just appreciate the decks as they are. Diverse decks will naturally arise anyways because creators will be diverse and they will authentically create art that reflects that. But bullying white artists into changing their work is totally unnecessary. Anyone can create a deck.

@@persephonel2117 Yea like my issue isn’t with diverse decks existing. My issue is with the push to make EVERY deck a diverse deck when with something so personal that doesn’t really work. I had to unsubscribe from someone recently because he will literally give a negative review to any deck that does not represent the ‘global majority’ (aka less white people in the deck than any other race) and does not contain some type of lgbt representation. Like dude not everyone wants or can relate to that? It’s absolutely fine to encourage those types of deck to be made for those that do want them but expecting EVERY deck to be like that is absolutely absurd.

I thought the comparison was unreasonable, because some cards were more interesting in the second version, but others were much uglier. Therefore, it was better not to have implemented the idea.
