So, picture this: I'm taking on the challenge of crafting four distinct thumbnail collages, but here's the twist-I'm using only three pieces of collage paper for each composition. It's all about pushing boundaries and getting those artistic juices flowing by playing around with limited resources.
The focal point here? Playing and practicing with unique abstract compositions. As I work on each collage, I'll let you know what I’m thinking, or not thinking, as I walk you through my process to create compelling visual stories within these small pieces of art.
But why should you try this exercise? Well, let me tell you, the benefits are as abundant as the layers in a mixed media masterpiece. Firstly, it's a fantastic way to flex those creative muscles and train your eye to experiment with abstract art composition. By working within the constraints of three pieces of collage paper, you're forced to think outside the box, honing your ability to make impactful artistic choices.
Moreover, these thumbnail collages serve as invaluable art exercises, offering a condensed platform to try out new techniques, refine your skills, and explore diverse styles within the realm of collage art. Trust me when I say, this practice isn't just about creating individual pieces; it's about building a foundation for your artistic thought process.
When your done watching, or even as your watching, give this collage practice a try. By the end of this video, you'll not only have seen my examples of manipulating abstract art compositions but also be eager to dive headfirst into your own creative exploration. Let's get those artistic gears turning!
    Keep on painting and collaging!

I always feel composition is the backbone of every good artwork. Getca good composition and your painting's already halfway done. Palette is another powerful dynamic.

Totally agree! It's funny, we tend to practice with color palettes, brush strokes, values etc but not composition. This is one of my favorite morning warm up exercises.

These seems like a great way to play and stumble on interesting compositions. I’m going to give it a try. I enjoy watching your process

Thanks, Denise! I've been starting off my day with these little thumbnails before I move on to warm-up paintings. It's an easy way get the juices flowing.

This video inspired me to start doing thumbnail collages today. Without timing them, I spent an average of 15mins on each 9cm2 thumbnail. I thoroughly enjoyed it and already can see the learning benefits. Fun and revealing ! Thanks!

Hey Angelina! I'm so glad to hear that. Thanks for your feedback 😊

I appreciate hearing your thought process, even if you have difficulty talking to us at the same time. 😂
I would love to hear you talk about *why* you’re choosing the collage pieces you’re choosing. I understand that it’s largely instinctive, but as someone who struggles mixing patterns, I’d like to understand why they DO go together & alternatively, why they do not work; why they *are* compatible so that I can start to see how I can create something with my ever growing pile of papers. 😊

Thanks, Gina! I'd love to say that's the first time I've lost my train of thought while talking but...😂😂😂
Discussing my collage paper choices is a great idea. I've made note of that for future videos.❤️

Good experiments with collage/composition. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts, especially when you lost it (familiar to me). I kept thinking that the blue+yellow=green paper was a challenge here. But, you pulled it off. Would have liked to see you lay the template on top. Thanks for this, Chris.

Thanks, Ann! That would have been a good idea to lay the template on top, didn't even think to do that. Next time. I tend to choose the nicer looking collage paper, so I thought it would be fun to see if I could do something with the 'lesser' more rough looking paper. It was a fun challenge.

Love the exercise on small calloge, I do struggle with composition from time to time, so this is most helpful. When you clean your brushes on paper are you using copy paper or just any paper ? Appreciate it Chris.

Thanks Ruth! I do these every morning and they are such a great warm up and composition practice. I literally use whatever is nearby for paper. I save junk mail envelopes, open them up and paint all over them. Copy paper. Old gelli print pages. Used wrapping paper. Anything.

My favourite was the shoe, I'm not sure about collage, it sort of interests me but I don't get it. Cheers!

Hey Howling! I don't typically do much collage art, but it's a quick and easy creative change up to get me thinking outside the box. Cheers!
