Sorry, I cannot agree. He was a strange choice for Germont in every respect. He sounded like an injured bull & acted like a plank of wood. The audience at the Met is notoriously partisan & he is one of their own. Diana Damrau & Juan Diego Florez sang & acted him off the stage. It was ungenerous of the audience, but something they always seem to do when there is an American in the production.

I saw this performance. I found Damrau to be bitterly disappointing although her acting was superb. I couldn’t explain to my young son why the soprano arias in La Traviata are astonishingly exquisite until I returned home and played him some really great sopranos who really sang Violetta. She ruined the music...pitchy, barking and just nothing sonorous or beautiful. She was better here, in the third act. Act I was the most disappointing. Juan Diego does have a small voice but a beautiful one. Considering this was the Met it was astonishing these two voices represented the “best.” I get the comments that Juan Diego is a “pop singer” because of his appearance, mannerisms, repertory and small voice. But I really enjoyed his performance despite these considerations. Yannick controlled the orchestra beautifully but I found the tempo a bit slow...especially in the opening overture. Sorry to all of you who thought Damrau was great: to me...an utter disappointment.

@@dieterflorian865 I think when you use the word 'sharp' you actually mean 'strong' or 'aggressive. In English, there is a big difference between the two words, especially when speaking in terms of music--singing 'sharp' means singing slightly higher than the actual note. If 'aggressive' is what you mean, I completely agree with you. There is no vulnerability here.
