For the first time (and almost certainly the last), Matt is ranking outside in the summer heat for this special hot dog episode of Bless Your Rank. All the top contenders have been grilled to perfection and then grilled again by the Alabama sun. Which frank will affirm their superiority? Will it be Oscar Mayer, Ball Park, Nathan's, Eckrich, Bar S, Gwaltney, or some other random brand Matt found at Piggly Wiggly? Also what the heck is going on in Smithfield, Viginia?!

So, originally Smithfield's was just the largest pork producer in the world and basically sold it's raw products including beef trimmings to brands like Nathan's. It got acquired by some major global conglomerate, and after that it acquired all of the brands mentioned in the video (and a bunch of others). So instead of just selling the meat to those brands, it actually makes the end products and packages them now. While they all say Smithfield, VA, most of their pork is processed in NC. The reason why Smithfield became so big is based on the fact that most pigs are raised and slaughtered in Virginia and North Carolina, so it made sense for the processing and packing companies to be in those states. Hotdogs specifically are byproducts of other pork processing. Smithfield is better known for their hams than hotdogs.

So my mom used to live in Smithfield, VA. I asked her if the town was stinky and she told me that it depended on a couple factors. One was if the tide was rolling out and another was if you could smell the meat plants. She told me that it could get pretty stinky if you were driving behind a hog truck, even with the windows closed.

I have a firm belief that Oscar Mayer makes the best hot dog to eat cold right out of the fridge in the middle of the night

I had a horrible day at work. Watching Matt rate and play with wieners was hilarious. Definitely needed that in my life. 😂😂 Matt, you made Gatorade squirt out of my nose, you were so funny. 😂😂

I had never had Nathan's until recently and now I'm spoiled for life with any other dog. Substantial and delicious. Closest to sausage in structural integrity and density. Sorry Oscar Meyer, youve been dethroned

One of the things to consider is beef hotdog vs meat blend, usually pork, turkey & chicken. Many people prefer all beef hotdogs because of the stronger flavor but I honestly don't really like them. They taste and sit way too heavy for me and I end up with serious indigestion. I prefer the mystery meat hotdogs like the Oscar Mayer ones. They don't sit like a rock in my stomach and they're also much cheaper.

My granddaughter, who loved hot dogs, spit Bar S dogs out and asked me never to buy them again and to get her regular ones, Ballpark. I tried it and had the same reaction. 🌭💝

The fact that we're talking about the "snap" for an uncased hot dog is really sad. We need to get this man to the midwest to enjoy a natural cased hot dog stat! One of the most disappointing things moving from the midwest to Tennessee is naturally cased hot dogs are just not a thing here.

Smithfield is a no go in our house. They were the first company to cancel Paula Dean. We dont hold with woke companys trying to tell us what to think.

I live near Smithfield, VA, and it consists of a quaint downtown and historic district and upscale golf communities. I don't recall smelling the hog farm and slaughterhouse but vaguely remember the smell outside of town off of the highway. Smithfield mostly is known for ham and bacon, and I had no idea that the hot dog brands, other than Gwaltney, were made there. In fact, Gwaltney is what is served at most ballparks, little league and professional, around here. Honestly, I prefer Hebrew National and you'll probably have to take away my Southern card for it. Maybe you'll give it back because I enjoyed a scrumptious slaw dog, with homeade chili and homemade coleslaw, on 4th of July. Still thinking about it. It was that good!

I lived near Smithfield for a while and was still surprised at how many of the hot dog brands Matt tried came from Smithfield.

My favorite brands are Oscar Meyer and Ekrich. BarS we usually buy for when we grill them on a charcoal grill.

I am an adult who grew up putting the trifecta: Duke’s mayo, French’s yellow mustard AND Hunt’s tomato ketchup on my hotdogs!🌭 From junior high school until now, I’ve been ridiculed for putting mayo on my hotdogs. I thought that was normal for everyone. Nope. Apparently, neither is sweet pickle relish! Gee Thanks, Mom. 😏 They don’t even taste right to me without these basics as the foundation.
Oh well, WHATEVER!!! I can’t eat them anymore, but it sure does bring back fond memories of outside suppers on summer evenings in the shade on a quilt with a breeze blowing…with sweet iced tea to wash it all down. Yum 😋 🤤
Thanks for the memories, Matt! 😊

Of course, being from Chicago, I understand your reticence towards the perfection that is the Chicago dog. And I agree, Nathan's is a darn fine dog. But if you can find them, Hebrew National are the BEST. And if you're in New York, you must try Zweigel's. Shout out to a sister city of food.

I grew up on Eckrich EVERYTHING (in Ft Wayne). When Smithfield bought it and moved it out of town, I just stopped eating everything but the hotdogs.
