This isn't in the tropics, it's in the subtropics, making it a non-tropical island. When are you going back home to the US?
So I am to understand there is pretty much no public transport? I don't intend to rent a car so I am not sure about visiting. I don't care to drive in places I am not familiar with (weird right?) and I will be traveling alone unfortunately.
Most of the small Japanese islands have zero public transportation. Actually Okinawa is pretty similar in that sense. Renting a car and driving in Japan wasn't really that bad to be honest :) But if you're unsure about driving, there are other places in Japan that have great public transportation.
There is an island bus service that will get you from the airport to the main city of Naze, and all the way to the south of the island which is called Setouchi. It’s quite reasonable and you can get an all day pass too.
