Rubbing your scalp with a damp cloth would've been better. That actually stops the itchy and removes some of the dirt. I do that with braids, twists etc even with no product.
I use witch hazel on makeup pads on my scalp when I have braids. It helps prolong the time between washes, which helps reduce frizz. It works really well. I use that same brand, Thayer’s, with lavender.
That brand of witch hazel is my favorite and use it on my face because it doesn’t have alcohol. I have locs and my scalp was dry because of the cold but it wasn’t time to wash so I was like let me see if this witch hazel will work. I put on a cloth and I wasn’t mad at the results. I did put oil on it after so it wouldn’t dry out. But as you said, hydration was what I needed and not an actual cleaning. To prevent the dryness I am just making sure that keep up with my rose water and aloe juice spray.
I thought that your scalp is just like your skin, therefore, it's safe for the scalp, and they do have it in the sensitive formula just like if you were to apply it to your face.
I would suggest you to try the ordinary scalp serum, bc it's multi-peptides and there are better hydrating agents for the scalp than your lotion, so quite skeptical about your product, I'll give it a pass, especially since there's whitch hazel, for dry, itchy, sensitive, and dandruff-prone, no alcohol but fragrance
