    Completely agree with you!
I’ve been natural since 2007 and here’s what I’ve learned throughout this journey:
    1. Clean your hair
    2. Moisturize
    3. Seal in the moisture
    4. Repeat on a regular basis (that can be weekly, bi-weekly or monthly - depending on your scalp and hair needs) and leave it alone
    5. Trim when needed
However you achieve these things (sulfate shampoo/non-sulfate shampoo, oils/no oils, silicones, grease, petroleum, twisting cream, gel, mousse, etc,) doesn’t matter.
The products you use are based on what your hair and scalp needs, the climate and the style you want to achieve. If these 5 steps are covered growth will come as a result because you’ll have healthy hair.
It really is simple, too many opinions has made it complicated.

Everyone is on a different journey and needs different things for their personal head of hair.
What I understood about the no oils, no butters, is that it's primarily for people who want to style their hair, especially in wash n go's. If your goals are length retention(probably some protective styles), no oils and no butters probably won't work for you. But if you want to style and restyle your hair throughout the week no oils and no butters is probably the best option.
You just have to ask yourself what is your goal and what are the goals of the person giving you this information. And you'll be fine.

I’m a professional hairstylist and I feel like the No oils no butters method works best for wash n go girlies as I wear wash n go’s frequently and I have fine low density hair. But for girlies who wear protective styles and twists, oils and butters are better as long as your hair is properly hydrated/moisturized underneath the protective style as long as you are cleansing your hair properly after taking down your protective styles, braids, twists, ponytails, etc. You should be clarifying at least monthly and deep conditioning at least monthly. I agree with both sides depending on how you wear your hair. I specialize in Silk Pressing and silk pressed hair needs to be deep conditioned 1-2 times monthly and you can’t use Oil on a silk press because it will weigh the hair down and burn while flat ironing. While with wash n gos you don’t have to deep condition unless your hair is damaged, dry, or broken off.

Thanks for the video. Forty years ago I often noticed the young men with a head full of beautiful long hair more often than the women . I learned the men were simply getting their hair braided with moisturizer and having grease applied to their scalp while women spent every Saturday afternoon getting our hair, relaxed, blow dried and hot curled. I'm glad to see we're getting away from being so harsh and rough with our hair and more into moisturizers, simple sealants like Vaseline if desired, less over processing and allowing extreme heat to be applied to our hair. Protective styles are much more popular allowing our hair to grow longer.

My salon waa closed for months and my then stylist moved out of state. I was forced to go natural. Now that I can go back to relaxed hair, I decided to embrace my natural hair. Plus the $ I'm saving is a plus. My 4C hair is fine, thin, and extremely coily. It will forever be a TWA no matter how much it grows It took ne until this summer to find the shampoo and hair.product combo that worked to keep my hair soft, without build up and my scalp itch free. Your video was a testiment that not everything works for everybody. You also made a whole lot of sense. I think that no oils or butters appeals to people who wanna have successful wash and gos . It also works for hydration and scalp health! I have noticed that the method works its actually amazing !. Grease is good for protecting your hair your ends and things like that but you won't get as much definition if you're 4b 4c if you use a butter as opposed to a botanical gel. If you like to have a quick washday no oils butters is awesome too! I think washing our hair is also so important to getting that hydration ! So I think that was an important message! I find my hair is healthier when I wash it once a week.

I'm pretty sure everyone was using gel for wash and goes - not butters... So far, I havent seen anyone have any special results from the BGC method. The only difference is now people w/ 4c hair are actually shingling, which isn't even a new technique. It's very old actually, but since looser textures didn't have to do all that work for a wash n go, I guess people just decided to stop. Do you know any youtubers with 4c hair that do this method and get amazing results? I know Jenn Jackson does it, but her results are lackluster and not defined.

And this is the trouble with the broken telephone of the internet... it ended up causing people to reject things off rip because it was just a hashtag removed from it's original context.
Additionally... what a chemist or product developer cannot offer more **practical** advice than a stylist... on styling. It's kinda weird how that's happening
People can grow their hair with any ole products cause hair is gonna grow regardless. The part ppl been struggling with is styling and caring with ease & and predictability, and I think ppl have found that now.
Effective, accessible info (with receipts) is out here now. Whatever happens in this community going forward reflects 1. what the masses truly want for their lives 2. What the companies + capitalists can convince us we "need"

Honestly, I consider myself a lazy natural (and this has always been my ministry) so I wash and go exclusively. My hair care regime is simple; I condition to detangle, shampoo (this step includes a clarifying shampoo and a conditioning shampoo), deep condition and a styler. I think stylists now preach no grease or oil because people don't use clarifying shampoos to get rid of the build up.
The fact is that most grease or oil heavy products aren't generally water soluble so if all you use is co-washes or gentle shampoos that don't clarify, you aren't getting all of that product out of your hair and that can lead to serious issues over time.

I think the issue is a knowing your hair like porosity and curl type, knowing the environment that you live in, whether it is high humidity or low humidity, and understanding with the product is supposed to do for you. There is no one-size-fits-all and anyone who tries to say that is selling you something. The no butters no oils movement was in its core an attempt to get people to understand the texture of their hair unadulterated with product. That was pretty useless for me because I don't really focus on style as much as I do Health and condition. So if my hair is really frizzy one day I'm fine with that as long as it's not super dry and stressed. If the curls are popping one day, that's fine too. I think what gets us messed up is an obsession with achieving a specific look. If you're focused on achieving a specific look know that you have to incorporate particular style products in a particular way. If you're really just thinking about the health and condition of your hair you don't have to worry about any of that.

I thought that there was something wrong with me and my technique. I didn’t see the light until I saw the hair typing chart. It was the epiphany that I needed. All hair was not the same. Different hair came out of different scalps. There was nothing wrong with me. God made my hair different. I will forever be grateful for that revelation. Sometimes, I think, when people want to throw that away it seems that they are dismissing the fact that hair is different. Whether we call it Type 4, tight curl, tightly coiled, it’s the same thing. What a great video! A lot of this stuff has become confusing or seemingly contradictory, and I think some of it is a case of An elaborate broken telephone game. You are very right that there are different factors like lifestyle, environment, hair condition, etc that can affect how certain products perform for each individual. I have invested in stylist education because it helped me simplify my routine and get my hair on track with predictable and consistent results that I love. I think one of the issues that I am still seeing just from participating in a lot of lives where consumers ask questions is that people really don't even know what they want their own hair to do, and/or what their own hair is capable of. Which leads people to buy a bunch of products and get confused/overwhelmed because they think they need everything. Some people will get so focused on ingredients that they will buy products that aren't ideal for the way they want to wear their hair. A lot of people don't even know what products to use depending on what style they want, so they use the wrong products or use them wrong and then think nothing works for them. I think we all need streamlining when it comes to all of these nuances, so I am looking forward to your future content. Ever since I started my journey I went straight to CZcams to try to find people that had hair like mine to learn from them. However, EVERYTHING is a factor. Genetics, overall health, environment, POROSITY, etc etc. I have low porosity and fine hair so I felt like I had to be extra careful and make sure I’m catering to it the way I need. Last year or so, I did the no product at all in my hair (after I wash and do a deep condition rinse out ofc). I would just spray with warm water and do a twistout and rely on sebum to get me through. I wasn’t really scrinching the sebum down my hair shaft and doing proper trims which I felt like would’ve helped more however, my hair was doing fine it just needed to be moisturized more down the shaft. Now I’m trying out using sunflower oil as a moisturizer and jojoba oil as a sealant after I spray my hair with warm water and I’m going to try to wash my hair every week and a half. I’m on a moisturized and hair growth at least down past my collarbone journey so, hopefully this works for me and if it doesn’t, I just need to be patient and still try to take care of Lucky (my hair name bc I’m lucky to have her 😪🤧) the best I can and not get overwhelmed and stressed out by other peoples pov. Once I made a conscious effort to pay attention to what my hair liked and didn't like, I was able to just focus on the products/methods that worked for me. For example, when trying a new product I just paid attention to how my curls looked afterwards. I paid attention at every step: prepoo, shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner, moisturizer and sealant. If my curls didn't bounce and look shiny, then I knew to cut that product out of my routine and try something else. If my scalp felt itchy or dry, then I definitely got rid of the product. I think he difference between the clarifying and moisturizing shampoos lies in the pH. CS have a higher pH and that's why the tell you to follow up with a MS to lower it before conditioning.

Ahhhh Thanks you so much for watching! And thank you for the information! I looked it up because you know I’m team education! And there are different PH balances in a CS and a MS! Since a Clarifying shampoo is more alkaline it does make the hair softer but over use (of course) leads to brittle hair. Whereas a Moisturizing shampoo is more acidic which allows the hair shaft to soften but retain more moisture. So I’ll still have both but definitely will be cautious of over usage and the correlation with breakage.
For the skin reference. I definitely agree about extrapolating those methods. My original intent was to share some what of a visualization that has helped me kind of simply or make sense of certain usage.

      @LethalLemonLime Před rokem +1

I'm sorry but this is not true. Why would a clarifying shampoo need to be more alkaline or have a higher pH? That is damaging and damage is not reversed by putting a conditioner on it (it just neutralizes the charge) since damage is irreversible. Although this kind of damage is the slow over time buildable type rather than the instant type (unless it's severely alkaline or severly acidic). Tons of shampoos that aren't considered clarifying have alkaline pHs. Some brands actually care about pH like redken so all their shampoos are at the proper pH for hair between 3.5 and 5.5 regardless of the shampoo. Why would a clarifying shampoo need to be alkaline? Is it because of the false belief that in order for it to cleanse your hair it needs to lift your cuticles? Water already does that on its own so it would be unnecessary and potentially damaging to purposefully try to lift it even more. Unfortunately, many shampoos, regardless of type, already have alkaline pHs. Some up to 8 even, but purposefully making a shampoo alkaline doesn't seem to be ideal for hair health. Another reason why alkaline shampoos aren't ideal is because an "alkaline pH may increase the negative electrical charge of the hair fiber surface and, therefore, increase friction between the fibers. This may lead to cuticle damage and fiber breakage." This is a direct quote from a study hence they quotation marks. This is most important for shampoos since conditioners, leave ins, etc. have cationic surfactants. Shampoos have anionic surfactants and that's what cleanses the hair. Anionic surfactants are negatively charged already. But at a higher pH level, it can be harder for the conditioner to neutralize the charge. Water has a pH around 7 but water doesn't have anionic surfactants that would further increase the negative electrical charge whilst also stripping your hair of lipids. This comment is getting to long and it's hard to type this on my phone, but basically an alkaline pH is not necessary to clean or "clarify" your hair. There are clarifying shampoos that are pH balanced.

I have enjoyed immense growth since going natural. BUT, I worked with professionals who knew what they were doing.
Crochet braids lasted 3 months with regular maintenance with my stylist for a solid year and I was shocked at the results.
However, once my hair reached a plateau then we had to figure this "next level."
I'm excited and anxious but understand the need to chemically understand what my hair is telling me and not be afraid to ACV rinse my hair regardless of how long a style has stayed in my head if I don't like it.
    Thank You.

great points. i wanted ease and simplicity so i went on a loc journey. all i used was soap, water, and raw oils/butters on my scalp (not down the loc itself) and my hair had never been healthier, longer, stronger, and easier for me in my life. but i was VERY much satisfied with my hair at any given point. the most “switch up” i would do is a messy bun when i wanted to shake it up. i didnt even particularly like a scalpy “fresh retwist” look, so i never felt the need to use gels. now i only have like 3 inches of hair ✂️ i still wanted ease so i still didnt do nothin. but when i started to feel dissatisfied with the shape, i has to commit to either a length journey, another cut, a color journey, or be willing to put in more active effort on the daily in styling. which ofc means i need different products to help support and moisturize the strands throughout manipulation, prevent frizz etc etc - its a whole new beast cuz my goals shifted. i like the pick your own adventure aspect of it all, but i think if everyone stopped saying things so conclusively and started adding conditions and like providing their reasons for their claims it would clear the air a bit. itll be nice to see you bridging that gap between the professionals’ claims and the consumers’ potential needs. thank you for putting so much thought into ur craft! looking forward to your new direction :)🫶🏾

I've been natural for decades and it took decades for me to figure out how to blend my hair's needs with my wants. My desired (and obtained) butt length hair requires A LOT more wash day time than I initially wanted to invest. My hair and scalp health required me to stay focused on my diet along with what I'm applying. I've accepted that my hair and scalp has responded so much better to my 100% DIY hair care and Ayurveda than anything store bought, which requires more work, but it's worth the effort. What you said about the environment and routine are so true. Years ago, I used to love using shea butter after my conditioner but I stopped. I wasn't washing my hair often enough and the store bought shampoo I was using at the time didn't wash it all out. It stayed dry as the sahara with brittle ends. I've learned heavy butters aren't good for when I was using them in my routine and switched to sealing oils to retain moisture. I've never seen a natural hair video that discusses how diet can impact your hair and change how hair may respond to different products. People will mention "drink plenty of water" but that is it. It's weird how a connection has not been made. A few years ago, I cleaned up what I was eating for gut health not thinking about the impact to my hair. Suddenly, my hair is softer, the texture is smoother and takes in product better. I finger detangle and can feel the demarcation line. It's amazing.

I agree with everything you said in this video! What really helped me was finding a natural hair content creator who has the same hair texture as me. I feel like too many people will follow a creator because they like their personality but their hair routine won't work for them. I've definitely spent some money on products but I feel now that I found what's best. Also, the environment is something a lot of people look over! If you live in the South, it makes no sense to follow a creator who lives in the Northeast. The climate is so different. For this reason, it's important to change your hair routine based on the season. What works for my hair in the winter is not what works in the summer.

Then I tried the Blue magic grease and I didn't like it. I wanted to be a wash n go girl but my lifestyle is more of chunky twist type of life.

Omg I love how you broke down all these natural hair topics and pin pointed what could actually be the problem. It’s honestly quite frustrating seeing us tear each other down when the natural hair influencers literally helped us to learn to embrace more of our natural hair. Blaming others for a certain hairstyle that didn’t match up to your personal hair is so out of pocket because we are all LITERALLY different people, so with that being said, why would a twist out on a natural hair influencer look 100 percent the exact same on a twist out me? We are unique and that’s it. Being different is so beautiful, being relaxed is so beautiful, wearing box braids and weaves year round is so beautiful. At the end of the day, if you’ve gained new knowledge to treat your hair however you want then you’ve succeeded in black girl beauty. #Period

There were some old school naturalistas who were pushy but for the most part you found help. A lot of these new school influencers and new wave people are a part of the "war" like culture. It's an all or nothing type of mentality. It's caused so much derision and self contemplation and a lot of people ARE MFKN TIIIIIIIDE! 🤣🤣🤣

I've resorted to being a lazy natural. Been natural pretty much all my life. Relaxed once when I was 15, instantly regretted it, big chopped 6 months later!
I used to spend whole days on wash days because my hair in every step I would have to detangle multiple times. For me... I stretch my hair and detangle a day before, after a style, and used moisturizing cleansers which only 2 that I can use.
Otherwise, everyday I'm rocking my braids like Crazy Eyes (OITNB) sometimes with a beanie or scarf cover.

I learned "natural hair care" products and techniques when I first read a book "plaited glory" by lonnice bonner the year Obama was elected. After growing it to mid back I don't know why I relaxed it. But I grateful for all the CZcams natural hair community for giving a broader perspective of natural hair and products to me. All these years I still occasionally stumble and need to switch up.
So I say just do and use what works for you!

Honestly as a cosmetologist myself I think it all boils down to washing your hair. Just. Wash your hair with a surfactant (cleansing agent) containing cleanser that works for your hair. Condition it well. Everything else imo is preference. The only thing I feel like is actually like, harmful to your scalp, is to never do substantial cleansing. Ya scalp needs to be cleaned regularly. The whole only conditioner no cleansing agents in sight thing is the only thing I will say to not do. Everything else? Negotiable. Grease? Sure. Cream? Sure. Only gel? Sure. No oil? Sure. All oil? Sure. Just clean your hair in between.
