The roots of organized sports in Canada date back to the 1770s, culminating in the development and popularization of the major professional games of ice hockey, lacrosse, basketball, baseball, soccer, football and cricket. Although typically thought of as American, the origin of the sport of baseball began in the Canadian town of Beachville, Ontario, and American football was initially developed by Canadians at McGill University before two different playing styles emerged, American football and Canadian football. Victoria, the photo of you falling down that wormhole was hilarious! Thanks for putting together this excellent Canadian (and Scottish) history lesson. I hope that you become a Leafs TV broadcaster one day soon!

I was going to Leaf games starting in 1969 when we moved to Canada. I've probably seen more games and concerts there than at the ACC/Scotia Bank Arena. I was fortunate enough to see the Gardens again after it became the Mattamy Athletic Centre for a concert. Though it is only half of what it used to be, seeing the ceiling structure again was a moment I'll never forget.
This video, like all your videos, was awesome. Thank you for bringing back memories of the Gardens.

This is so cool! As a Torontonian who is a huge Leafs and Jays fan, how did you become a Toronto fan? I'm also a massive Newcastle United fan, haha. Always find this cool. Great video!

A lot of interesting events happened at Maple Leaf Gardens during its time. In 1966, a heavyweight boxing championship fight took place there, as legendary fighter Muhammed Ali had to take the maximum of fifteen rounds to defeat Canadian George Chuvalo in a unanimous decision. The two would have a rematch in Vancouver in 1972, producing another unanimous decision for Ali.
There were a good number of concerts that took place there over the years. Elvis Presley did a show there in 1957, one of only a few ever outside the US. The Beatles also performed there on all three of their North American tours in the 1960s.

I went to MLG a few times over the years up in the greens as my father would get tickets from his work

I got to see the Maple Leaf Gardens, but it was being demolished. It was insanely sad as it was just a cool downtown theater front, but a full arena behind.

The Gardens isn't demolished. There's still a smaller arena on the top floor.

I think part of it is still being used as an arena by Toronto Metropolitan University. The other portion is a Loblaw's store, but there are some areas on the floor that show where the ice used to be.

You should do a deep dive into Leafs ownership. it's speakes volumes on why the Leafs have not won a Cup for so long.
The Steve Stavros failed ownership led to MLSE. It's one of the worst moments in Toronto sports history. And I have the stories to tell..Great Video, by the way..Your caring is noticed by all of us in Leafs Nation...I was at the Parade in 67..Best day ever.
