    Love your Elena Lotus. Wish I had one. So happy for you, though. Great tips! Thanks.

    Great tips Lisa. I have been sewing knits with my sewing machine for some time and now we are getting better fabric choices too. Last year I bought my first serger and I do love it. Give it a go!

    Hi Lisa, great tips for knits👍. I swear though, you will not look back once you have a go with the surger. It saves so much time once you get used to it. The cutting blade can be a bit scary at first and I have accidentally cut into a top I was making once and I was not best pleased😣 but I learnt from that day and I'm much more careful now. They are definitely not an essential by any means, but once used I think you will love it💞. Happy Easter and looking forward to seeing your future makes 😘

    Your video has come at a perfect time for me. Thank you! I'm a sewing/dress-making beginner and I've just purchased some ponte(which I hadn't even heard about until a week ago)!! These tips are very helpful for a newbie. I want my first dress-making project to be a success so I feel happy to add to my wardrobe with home-made things and not feel they will somehow be inferior to shop bought!!
    ps learning such a lot through your videos.

      That’s great, Carolyn! I’m sure your dress will look amazing. Welcome to the rabbit hole. ;)

    These are great tips Lisa, thank you! I am still slightly scared even though I have done a teensy bit of sewing with knits 🙈 However, I just got my sewing machine and overlocker back from being serviced so I think it’s time to go for it!! Lovely video as usual 😍

    I'm intrigued by that stretch thread:) Fitting patterns is my nemesis, so I love knits all the more, lol. I've also had great results with my regular sewing machine (my mom gave me her serger and I have yet to learn how to use it 😁).

    I have never seen that stretch thread Lisa, not sure if we can get it in the UK, I also have just discovered wonder tape to stabilise knit hems before sewing, it washes out and is amazing! no more wavy hems, love your vlogs xx

      Thank you! I do have wonder tape and use it occasionally- it’s great stuff!

    I like stretch thread for panty sewing, works great.

    Thanks, your tank Is cute. I like the cut of the back. I didn't know about the stretch thread. Based on my experience, I don't think it's necessary for everyday garments but I would definitely use it for exercise wear and swimwear. It's interesting that you have not tried your stretch stitch since it is designed especially for knits. I love mine (just baste with a straight stitch first if unsure as it's impossible to unpick) and there's no trying to remember what settings to use. I never use a walking foot because it's been totally unnecessary but I am sure it depends on your individual sewing machine. I agree about ponte, and also French terry, as first-sew knits. Art Gallery jerseys are pretty stable also but need a light hand so as not to accidentally pull them while sewing or pressing.

    • @Lisamakes
      @Lisamakes  Před 6 lety +1

      Oo, Art Gallery jerseys are so pretty! I’d love to get my hands on some. I did try the stretch stitch but found it slow- I just got used to the zig zag and walking foot. I probably could do without it for most things- but it’s a bit of security blanket. ;)

    I have a small house and really can't fit a serger in my sewing space, thanks for the tips and also the width and length you use for your zigzag stitch.

      Glad to help, Patti! I like to know stitch lengths people use, too. It gives me a place to start.

    This video could not have come at a better time for me! I've just started working with knits and all of these tips are super help. And on top of that, I'm planning on making the Durango Tank with only a sewing machine as my first project. Do you have any tips for doing the arm holes?

    • @Lisamakes
      @Lisamakes  Před 6 lety

      That’s great! I don’t have specific tips, except read the instructions a few times before you do them so you make sure you have a good handle on them. ;)

    i appreciated all the tips--especially the needle tip and the stitch length/width that you use. can you tell me about knits as far as shrinking? do you prewash before sewing and do they shrink a lot? thanks!

    • @Lisamakes
      @Lisamakes  Před 6 lety +1

      Always, always pre-wash knits! It’s hard to say exactly how much they will shrink, because it really depends on the fabric. In general, the better quality, the less it shrinks.

    Hi Lisa, great video! Do you use the heloflex in the bobbin only or also as regular thread? I have been using woolly nylon in the bobbin only, I am not sure is the same as heloflex. Thank you and have a lovely day.

    • @Lisamakes
      @Lisamakes  Před 6 lety

      cristinam10 I use it in both. I think it is finer than the wooly thread- it also has a little bit of a sheen.

  • @sagepreaumx9903

    I'm finding that a walking foot is good for everything (so far). Do you find this to be true, is there anything that it shouldn't be used for? For those who don't have a walking foot, I have made leggings without at walking foot and have done just fine.
    You use eloflex on the top and in the bobbin?

    • @Lisamakes
      @Lisamakes  Před 6 lety

      Sage Preaumx hey! I haven’t found there was anything that I felt I wanted to take the walking foot off. That said, it may be a bit of a security blanket. ;);) I use the eloflex in both.

    Hi Lisa! Fun fact since you’re learning to speak Spanish! Did you know that your stretch “elo” thread actually means “thread” in Spanish! Your pronunciation is perfect but the actual spelling for thread in Spanish is “hilo”! Loving the vlogs! Take care!

    What do you think about rayon as a beginner's knit?

    • @Lisamakes
      @Lisamakes  Před 6 lety

      Hmmm... I’m not sure... I’m sure I’ve sewn with a rayon knit, but can’t quite remember.

      I wouldn't, I'd start with something more stable.

    Another tip: cut your fabric out with a rotary cutter.
