    That scene where Maleficent wakes up to realize her wings have been taken is so impactful. It mirrors what waking up to being drugged and taken advantage of, and the feeling of knowing something has been taken from you that you can never have back. I was so emotional during that scene. Those who have been through will likely have been touched by this scene. That scene and Angelina’s acting are just amazing, the movie overall is great!

    This is not a "Disney live-action remake." Rather it is a Disney live-action "Re-Imagining" of the Sleeping Beauty story, from the perspective of Maleficent showing that the villain may not seem so "villainous" if you understand their motivations.

      yeah, it's kinda like "WIcked". where (at least in the book, i haven't seen the play) the entire story of The Wizard Of Oz was actually this huge misunderstanding, combined with a little "embellishment of the victor". That Elphaba, the "wicked" witch of the west, was actually a good person (and pretty, just had green skin), but a series of accidents and misunderstandings made her look evil. that glinda the "good" witch of the north, was actually a jealous narcissist, OZ was a liar and instigator, and so on.

    So the fact that Stefan invited everyone but Maleficent was a political slap in the face as she is the ruler of the neighboring country. People went to war over offenses like that. So that she showed up without invitation, chose not to be offended, and then offered a gift was her version of go f* yourself. Then, he further humiliates himself by refusing a voluntary gift from a purposefully uninvited guest in front of all of his political enemies and allies. She gutted him by revealing his character as a leader and utter lack of political acumen.

    • @hurricanebubbles
      @hurricanebubbles Před 6 měsíci +32

      Yep, and then to invite Flora Fauna and Merriweather but not Maleficent was an even greater insult. It's kind of an all or nothing. He specifically didn't invite just her. And you can see the Queen try to be diplomatic and Stefan is an ass again. (not that the Queen could have done much at that point to appease Maleficent as the queen is a symbol of the reason Stefan did what he did to Maleficent)

    It makes a lot of sense for Maleficent to stop believing in True Love's Kiss because Stefan was the one who told her about it. Also this movie does a really good job of showing Maleficent as not a monster, she just wants vengeance. They even showed the scene of Maleficent with the deer and then again with Aurora. Maleficent and Aurora are very similar in terms of personality in this movie.

    33:56 Ouch~ You know who else I really felt for in this story? Aurora's biological mother. She never got to see Aurora again, after they sent her away for her protection, before she died. With this one, more so than the animated, you really get the idea she probably felt she couldn't keep her child from being sent away or demand she be brought back to her, not against Stefan. And even if she was maybe trying to request that of Stefan, as she was sick & dying, he didn't go see her...

    Oh, and fun fact: in the original, the battle over the dress color, with one of the fairies preferring blue, and the other preferring pink, was actually satire, a social commentary on debates going on at the time. at the time the movie was being made there was a public debate over which color was appropriate for which gender. there was a growing movement of people believing that they should start going against tradition, and changing the colors.
    See, up until that point, blue had been a girl's color, and pink was for boys. But more and more people were saying it should be the other way. Pink for girls and blue for boys. eventually that group won out.
    You can see the change happen if you look what the women and girls in disney animated films wore before and after sleeping beauty.

    • @hurricanebubbles
      @hurricanebubbles Před 6 měsíci +12

      Another funny thing is in the animated Cinderella, her dress is silver not blue. It wasn't until later that her dress became blue for merchandising. Probably thought the color would "pop" more.

    This one is definitely my favorite "remake." It has the strongest story, the most original plot, and a great aesthetic. It also had a REALLY good message about taking responsibility for your actions, and consent. Stephan getting paranoid because he knew what he did to Maleficent is one example, but so is Philip's kiss not working. Attraction doesn't equal consent (or love) so it makes perfect sense that it didn't work.

    4:05 iron as a weakness to fairies/faeries (and even sometimes elves) is a common theme in old and modern fae stories. The effects varies, sometimes it burns, repels, only able to hurt/die by iron weapons, etc.
    Examples I can think of off the top of my head are Lost Girl (tv series), Black Witch Chronicles by Laurie Forest (book series), True Blood series (I think, at least the pure-blood fae), Faerie Path series by Allan Frewin Jones (book series)

    I ADORE this remake. It’s so refreshing to see a fairytale story where the characters aren’t black and white. Maleficent is angry and grief stricken do to her being alone and then the one person she thought she could trust took her most valuable piece of her. Even still she only ever wanted to hurt him and never truly Aurora, she just new Aurora was the best way to get back at him. I think it’s sweet that Aurora was just so comfortable around Maleficent and despite the fact everyone saw the bad in her, Aurora only saw the good, which in the end made Maleficent forgive and forge a new loving relationship with the girl she had once wished was taken from her father, the way her father took her wings. I just LOVE this movie. Not to mention all the fairies in the Moors are absolutely ADORABLE. ❤ Also just realized, but the actress that plays Knotgrass, the red fairy, is Imelda Staunton, the woman who plays Umbridge in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix! Never put that together!

  • @LadyKhione
    @LadyKhione Před 6 měsíci +24

    I loved this retelling of a classic tale, and I loved how they altered the 3 little fairies. Even as as kid i had thought it odd that the 3 fairies would show up to the birth of Aurora if the two kingdoms were not on good terms, and that this telling made those 3 out to be individuals with 'well intentions poor execution' helped it make sense for me. rewatching you can see almost every action those 3 faries take is intended to help but never really ends up helping in the way they intend...or at all. Its easier for me to believe that they had gone to the kingdom to help try and keep peace or bridge the widening gap between the two kingdoms since they could clearly see Maleficent wasn't going to be doing anything about it except defend the moors.
    Very very small aside, long ago I head a hot take from a content creator who had done their reasearch into european fairy lore (in so far as how fae/fey creatures acted, what was important/known about the fae, and what powers they had) and had a very jucy bone to pikc with the original Disney story. Fast summary is that the Fey in european lore hold very strictly to rules of decorum and have almost unlimited power if givent the right payments. So! this creators biggest insight into Disney's first retelling is that even in the animated version, the king and Queen brought Aurora's fate on to her all by themselves. Heres how she got there: in the original telling all important nobles were invited to the celebration of Aurora's birth - all things considered and in the original Maleficent was not a direct enemy of the kingdom so this invitations would and SHOULD have included her; this goes especially because the 3 fairies were specifically invited to the birth of the princess (faries that ranked lower than malefficent in the fey kingdom). SO, when in the original Maleficent still shows up and gives the king an out by saying 'my invitation must have gotten lost aka. I know you wouldn't be dumb enought to not invite me" and the response she gets (I think from the blue fairy) is that the truth is she wasn't invited intentionally - Maleficent realized she had been personally slighted by the King, and if anyone knows anything about european mythos you know you dont insult a fae without consequences. its for this slight the lack of invitation to an event meant to include all nobility and even gentry that Maleficent (correctly) interprets as an acti of aggression and so respoinds in kind by cursing the very purpose of the party in the first place, the little Aurora. From Maleficent's point of view she's even being lenient by giving the child time to grow up, live life, and have a chance of removing the curse if she can find love.
    While this clearly isn't the take that disney ran with, and I am very very happy with the story we got, I feel like you can sense that Disney did research into european fae lore when helping Angelia figure out how they wanted Maleficent to behave and respond to various events in the story. To me, the live action interpretation of Maleficent really felt like a fae/fey from european myths and it make the movie that much more enjoyable :)

    I can understand most of you being unsure and skeptical especially Stella at 45:42-45:56, if you would do a reaction of _Maleficent: Mistress of Evil_ at a later point considering it wasn’t as good as the first _Maleficent_ film to most of you including Stella, as the first film ended perfectly and all of you didn’t want the sequel to ruin the first film’s ending. However, I do recommend you give the sequel a chance as the second film is an original story and includes several new characters played by actors that you’ve seen in other reactions before such as Warwick Davis, Chiwetel Ejofor, Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Skrein the latter actor who played the main bad guy in _Deadpool (2016)_ and also Zapan in _Alita_
    In fact, it also wouldn’t surprise me if this was also the reason why all of you have not reacted to _Pacific Rim: Uprising_ following your reaction to _Pacific Rim_ back in May considering how Uprising was a step backwards from the first _Pacific Rim._ But then again, most of you have reacted to The Meg films including _Meg 2: The Trench_ which the latter film wasn’t as good as the first Meg film, but you still reacted to it regardless of the problems and expressed your criticisms of that film at the end of the reaction.
    So if you don’t want to react to _Maleficent: Mistress of Evil_ that’s your choice @whitenoisereacts but it would be a missed opportunity to have you guys skip out on the sequel and not give your opinions/discussions on that film.

    My biggest problem with the Disney remakes is that they are such missed opportunities. Often they will try do something different to justify their existence, but those rarely are allowed to actually flurish into anything, as they are constantly undercut by the ball and chain of having to include Iconic Disney Moments (TM), leading to many films feeling like there was no reason to make them beyond "popular Disney animated movie = popular live action movie = profit", and then they just hired people to figure out how to do that as a secondary concern. Sometimes those two things just end up conflicting with eachother in a way that makes it seem like the creators didn't understand the themes and characters of the original in the first place (Pinnochio), sometimes they try to "fix" something, but because they can't change "too much", they end up making the implications worse (Lion King and it's treatment of hyenas).
    Malificent actually feel like someone had an idea they wanted to do and then just commited to it; to see how much they could twist the original story without really changing much of the original plot (except the very end), but just by adding context and changing POV and framing. Burton's Alice (as much as some people rag on it) at-least also felt like someone had an idea. Pete's Dragon seems more than anything like someone wanted to make a genuine tribute to all those "a kids make friends with supernatural-creature/animal, but the world of adults don't understand"-films of the 80s and 90s, and pitching it as a Disney remake was the only way they'd get their bosses to let them make that. Cinderella did a bit of a milder version of what Malificent did, playing a lot closer to it's source, but at-least was not afraid of changing or cutting "Iconic moments" from the animated film to fit a clear vision of what they wanted to make.
    Also, apart from Pete's Dragon possibly being a trojan horse pitch, the films rarely seem to be picked from a desire to actual do something with the title. Like if someone asked you what Disney films you think could benefit from a possibly darker redo how many of the films they've actually made would come to mind? Personally I would go for for example: A more faithfull adaption of the Black Cauldron, something fans of those books have been wanting for decades but has been hard due to the rights being tied-up with Disney, or an adaption of the Hunchback of Notre Dame musical that did all those things they wouldn't get away with in the original movie, but without the limitations of having to be on stage.
    Even Mulan, which is very different from the animated film, feels like they were just told to make a Mulan film, while they actually wanted to make a fantasy movie about a world where women weren't allowed to use magic, and then had to beat that concept with a crowbar until it kinda looked like Mulan, rather than anyone having much interest in doing anything with either the Disney film or the ballad it's based on.

    The scene where she looses her wings is so heartbraking because that is the moment she was betrayed by someone she thought she could trust and even more so, someone she loved. I love how when Malifacent is angry her eyes glow with a green tinge that is how you know she is about to do something or use her magic in anger also I love how Angelina does the little sounds as if she is upset and then laughs when facing Stephan at the party before cursing Aurora. This movie is not a remake nor a live action of the disney movie it is it's own thing that is based on the Sleeping Beauty disney movie that is all and the same goes for Mulan though that one was not at all based on the disney it was actually created based on the real life ledgend of Mulan so no connection to me any way. I love this movie so much and the fact that the kiss doesn't have to be one that comes from a prince is an amazing idea to me...true love can be between a daughter and her child and that is so true. Angelina plays her so well and the scene where little aurora touches her horns that was actually Angelina's real life daughter because she was the only one not scared of the way her mother looked in the costume haha so cute. Grate reaction as always guys and there is a second one but I didn't really like it that much honostly.

    @whitenoisereacts. to answer your question, both the baby AND the 3-4 year old Aurora were played by Angelina's kids because they were the only ones that would not cry when she approached her in full costume. Also one of her sons has a cameo in the christening scene as being a courtiers kid.

  • @Yena_da1

    So when Maleficent came out Angelina only had one child if I'm not mistaken, her daughter Shiloh. She is the little girl running in the field and falls off the cliff. Other children would get scared and cry at the sight of Angeline in costume, but Shiloh just saw her mommy and smiled. Even the scene where Maleficent picks her up and she plays with her horns, it was just mommy and daughter play time lol, so cute. Stella is right though it was just Shiloh, the infant is not Angelina's child.

    Iron burning burning fairies goes back to traditional fae lore. People believed that iron would repel the fae. Depending on what you read, there are variations of it. Some authors make it so iron kills them, burns them, or is just something they hate, so people would wear iron and place iron around the windows and doors of their homes.

    i don't think doing a shot for shot remake in live action is a bad idea. the look of live action has its own style and things can feel different in live action, then in animation. things that are routine in animation, can look impressive in live action when done right (people flying, for example).

    5:10 the movies never actually confirm it or not, but I feel like the reason Maleficent looks so different to the other fairies is because she's from the Unseelie court while the others are from the Seelie court. In Fae lore, there are two courts of fae - the Seelie and Unseelie. While both are tricksters and either could really be good or evil, the Seelie are typically seen as the more civilized and are all white and gold and silver. The Unseelie are more mysterious and are all blacks and browns and greys. Just a theory.

    33:22 Not too long ago, I read a summary for a book that is an official Disney licensed book that tells Sleeping Beauty from Prince Phillip's perspective *BUT* also adds like a layer that he goes on a quest to do something before he meets "Briar Rose"~ AND~ he starts having dreams where he talks to a girl he knows as Briar Rose~~~ (quick reminder: in the original Aurora's name when she's living with the fairies is Briar Rose & Once Upon a Dream is the love song her and Phillip sing when they meet, right after Aurora had just been telling the forest animals she met someone in her dreams) I thought "that's an interesting way of maybe fixing the love at first sight problem Disney's love stories often have; wish they did something like that sooner and in their movies".
    I think there was also a book before it in the series focused around Eric from The Little Mermaid where Eric is cursed, something like he'll die if he kisses the wrong person(???) which adds to why he's reluctant to kiss Ariel when he really meets her~~~

    I just discovered this movie this last week. I really enjoyed it and also recognized that it was Shakespearean. Stefan’s descent into madness reminded me of MacBeth. It turns out the screenplay was written by the same guy that wrote The Lion King.
    I’ve watched a lot of reviews on it and one thing I’ve noticed is that just about all of the people giving negative reviews miss a lot of the more subtle details and so fail to recognize how well the story is actually put together.
    I view the movie as kind of an art house film disguised as a children’s movie. It’s too subtle and esoteric to work as a “children’s movie.”
