  • Thanks for watching. I wanted to create a ring that would act as a key for my car. I’ve seen them selling online but I thought I could make one for less and possibly even better. I purchased a ring blank from Amazon and one of my key cards from Tesla.
    Hope you enjoy. Ask any questions you have and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

    CA for the finish was surprising, never seen that done👍 Alternatively, a UV cured resin (this resin only gets hard when exposed to UV light...sunlight works, but takes a little longer). Using wood veneer was inspired! I've wanted to try this type of thing, for a different application, but didn't want to see the chip and antenna wire, in the ring. Thanks for posting this!

    Very cool idea. Any idea why you have to take the ring off for it to work? And just in case you were wondering, there ARE rfid rings you can buy with a RFID Reader Writer Copier for fair decent prices. I, like you, would likely take the DIY route as well.

    • @humandoing9675
      @humandoing9675  Před 2 lety +1

      As far as I’m aware. You need a longer antenna to allow the ring to work while wearing it from a distance. knuckle bumping the b pillar works while wearing it but I prefer to take it off. Not a big enough of a deal breaker for me to worry about it. It’s a back up key and not used often, but it comes in handy. Regarding other RFID rings, from what I’ve read, they don’t work with Tesla’s.

    • @totheknee
      @totheknee Před 2 lety +1

      It probably depends on the frequency used, and encryption. Tesla is probably more secure than the joke "security" that exists for building access? But also, all the 125kHz* rings online are either black, or silly fake wood with the grain going perpendicular to the ring "flow." I see only like two companies in China making them on AliExpress/eBay/Amazon. All the same design, not that great. 😞 But this video is amazing for DIY ideas.

    Assuming you have to take it off because of the orientation of the antenna. What about ‘knuckle bumping’ the car so that the orientation is proper? Does that work?

    • @humandoing9675
      @humandoing9675  Před 2 lety

      Hi Chris, yes if you “knuckle bump” the ring does work. I still find it easier to remove it but that’s just my preference I guess. Maybe if this was a more primary way to unlock the car, leaving the ring on might be easier? I use it as a back up only and it’s been great to have. Thanks for the question.

      Thinking of making one for myself but don't have to take the ring off every time in order for it to unlock. @phoenixhangar you'd experimented with this and got a solution. have you made any videos and/or any hints how to do it? please share. By the way, great DIY video by @humandoing9675.

    • @gateway1776
      @gateway1776 Před 11 měsíci +2

      @@phillippham9998 Kudos to you for aiming to make one for yourself! With everything else going on, I have not had time to make a video...yet, haha. However, I'd be more than happy to share tips on how to get it to work while still keeping the ring on.
      First let me say that based on the way @humandoing9675 wound his antenna, if you imagine a shaft running through the hole in the ring, that shaft would need to be pointing into the A-pillar. Thus, the ring has to come off, unless you can bend your finger really, really, REALLY far (and your fingers are absolutely tiny...).
      I'll make a video demonstrating this at some point, but maybe somebody else can get to it first (in which case tag me lol). But if you wind the antenna into a circle, pinch it to form a very skinny ellipse, then bend the ellipse around one side of the ring, you'll be able to unlock the car while still keeping the ring on.
      In order to avoid screwing this up, I recommend working with the winding configuration to first create a circle of wire capable of unlocking the car. The key is to avoid folding the antenna back over itself, as this disrupts the antenna's electromagnetic field.
      A method that worked for me was to:
      (PRE NOTE: You *may* have to CAREFULLY) fully unwind the antenna wire--I had mixed success this way, so maybe try it without, then, if that doesn't work, unwind it)
      1. Take a short, rigid tube about one inch in diameter
      2. Imagining the NFC chip as the top of the wire and the opposing curve as the bottom, pinch the halfway point on the wire against the tube
      3. At this, you should treat the wire on the left-hand side of the tube as one part (not "side", but "part", as both sides should form circles at the end) of the circle, and the wire on the right-hand side of the tube as the other part of the circle.
      4. Using one infinity/figure-eight twist per circle, twist the wire and push the circle that forms on to the corresponding side of the tube.
      5. In the end, the original piece of antenna wire you were pushing against the tube should act as the midpoint for the set of newly-formed circles wrapped around the tube on either side of the mid-line.
      Now, you should have a circular antenna about one inch in diameter capable of unlocking the car.
      At this point, you'll want to pinch the side of the circle to form a very skinny ellipse, then bend the ellipse around the inlay of the ring. The result should be a loop/ellipse taking up about half of the ring's inlay.
      This configuration maintains the circular pattern needed by the antenna wire while also shifting the polarization to work with the human finger.
      Hope that helps somebody, and cheers!

    • @humandoing9675

      I’m not sure what you are asking? The Tesla key card is RFID, but the ring blank itself is just ceramic.

    • @gateway1776
      @gateway1776 Před rokem +1

      I'll add a bit to this--the ring itself uses an NFC chip (NFC being a subset of RFID). As far as I can tell, Tesla's pretty stingy when it comes to adding keys, so your DIY ring will need to be built from an actual Tesla key (third-party NFC/RFID rings have been reported as incompatible according to my research). That being said, Robert Quattlebaum has done some fantastic work with designing a JavaCard/Applet Tesla key if you wanted to use something like that (czcams.com/video/QBP_Hjlpwjs/video.html). He also has a GitHub page detailing his work, so if you're trying to avoid Tesla keys, maybe check that out.
      Hope that helps, and cheers!

      This probably isn't much help if you already glued the wire in place (unless you put the ring in acetone again haha), but I might be able to help you with this. First, does taking off the ring and placing it flat against the B-pillar work? If not, how did you wind the antenna wire?
