Bamboo dance (Cheraw, Tinikling, ) is very great dance... its a very mpressive dance in the world... How many tribe will say that its our cultural dance -- Mizo (India), Philipino, Thai, Khmer, Viatnamese, Combodian, etc.
indeed, bamboo dance is a significant cultural thing that we all Asian people have in common. you can find out that almost every ethnic group in every parts of Asia perform this regardless of various kinds of settings and performances. so, let us all Asian people be united and proud of having this common traditional treasure.
i remember doing this dance when i was a kid in camp lejune n.c. . my pinoy friend had four sisters who introduced us to it. now at age 40 with a background in kali and silat i still cant get the footwork right to avoid my ankles from getting trapped in the bamboo. this brought back memories.
i think, every malay nation (philippines, malaysia, indonesia) has the claim to this dance. this dance is practiced even before these 3 countries were formed.. let's just be proud and appreciate that our countries' different ethnic groups were able to preserve it.
precious culture come from around the world and somtimes it has the similar culture. and this dance is one of my culture dance call bamboo dance or in my language we call it "magunatip " dance. whatever it is,should proud coz there is the culture left for new genrtn..
yup thats true even in Hainan Dao (China) and Assam (India) they have bamboo dance..Cambodia has the Kos Ang Rae, Tinikling and Singkil of the Philippines, Moa Sap in Vietnam, Lao Kratop Mai in Thailand and this one from Sabah
From what I have seen so far, it seems that bamboo dances are prevalent throughout Southeast Asia and even eastern India. Borneans/Sabahans has this one, Filipinos has a few like the Tinikling and Singkil, Thais, Khmers, Vietnamese and Indians like Mizo and Assamese.
as far as i know, MIZO people from MIZORAM, INDIA are the best in this bamboo dance. they broke world' Guinness book by this dance in 2003 for they performed with around 30,000 dancers and 700 settings at the same place at the same time. this is really amazing and epoch-making. MIZO PEOPLE ARE THE BEST IN BAMBOO DANCE IN THE WORLD. anyway, i am not Mizo.
@MrRathbun Hello Sir. Although it is taught in schools that the Philippines was populated by Malays and Indonesians, modern anthropologists now believe it is the other way around. Current belief is that people of the northern Pacific islands (like Guam) migrated east to Formosa (now Taiwan) and then spread south to the Philippines, then further south to Indonesia and Malaysia, eventually reaching as far east as Sri Lanka and Madagascar in Africa.
Tinikling is originated in the Philippines,in a region of Visayan Islands. If you dance using a bamboo that is called a Bamboo dance but not tinikling dance.Tinikling words comes from a bird called tikling of whom people wants to catch a bird using bamboo sticks, and ask visayan guy on how to walk tinikling and why?
well, it may not originated from the Philippines, but by the looks of this performance in particular, it's costume, it's like they're from Ifugao (an ethnic tribe in the Philippines) And yeah, one commenter is right.. U wanna give credit? Why not give it to Adam and Eve? PROUD TO BE A HUMAN (that'll be more safe LoL)
@ctg21361 why would we get tinikling from malaysians & indonesians when they came from us? also southern china, taiwanese aboriginals, vietnamese & some northern indians also have bamboo dances. but bamboo dance is more widespread in the philippines & seems to have originated from there.
I am Filipina. Do not assume that because a dance uses bamboo sticks, that automatically it originated in the Philippines. Think of the origins of the Filipino people with the Indonesian and Malay influence. They have their own dances that may look similar, but are not from our Philippine dances (more likely we got it from them!), so do not say that the singkil or the tinikling are the originals. Give the other countries credit for their ethnic heritage as well.
LoL~ Well, you're wrong at some of your points. Singkil is a dance based on Darangen which is a Southern Filipino epic. and Tinikling emerged during the colonial period. These dances are all Original Filipino Creations. Some people are just citing the similarities and differences. What I am trying to say is that you have to be extra cautious about mentioning influences from other culture. You need an In Depth understanding of our history before carelessly uttering or citing these influences. Research more about our Pre-Colonial History... I suggest. :)
m doubt that we have a same resemblance.. m from india, in the north eastern part.. we did this same dance in every cultural occasions... it is believe that our ancestor are from some part of south east asia..
It is my tribe's dance..the magunatip dance of the muruts(dayak tahol) people in sabah,malaysia..this dance has itd own rythm with a little bit mixed with the dusun's kulintangan
When I was in the Girl Scouts, at the Cadette Level, There was a Pin that stood for understanding/demonstrating some knowledge of international culture. We chose The Bamboo Dance ( we got the Bamboo from Carpet Fealers. C
@MrRathbun It would be wonderful to see the day more evidence is discovered to help modern day anthropologists put together these missing pieces of the puzzle. As of now, there is no solid evdence of the true origin of the bamboo dance. My educated guess would be, wherever bamboo grows is a possible origin. It may have started simultaneously in different places.
@cchettry: No, bro. this is not Mizo costume and the dance itself is not Cheraw. anyway, Mizo people are the best bamboo performers in the world cos they broke the world's Guinness book in 2003. but i am not Mizo.
@ctg21361 Cmon! It is originally filipino... even if we descend from indo-malay... Do we have to tell other people our history? we came from malaysia... and people in malaysia came from the indian subcontinent... and those people came from indo valley... from adam and eve... you want to give credit? right?
@yt532em: did you ever know this. MIZO PEOPLE IN MIZORAM STATE, INDIA ARE THE BEST BAMBOO DANCE PERFORMERS IN THE WORLD COS THEY BROKE THE WORLD'S GUINNESS BOOK. just check it out by yourself there, dude.
why would we get our bamboo dances from malaysia or indonesia? bamboo dances are a staple of austronesians & the austronesians spread from taiwan to the philippines to other countries. we didn't come from them, they more likely came from us
@yt532em: what? haha.. you cannot say like this groundless talk. bamboo dance is a traditional dance that we most of Asian people have in common. you check, and find out that in many parts of Asia, this dance is performed in their own way of setting and costume and even their significant way of performing. so, you mean, all of them came to the Philippines and learned from you people? wahaha....so funny. no one knows its origin. but just know this is our common thing.
Im half-mizo and I promise that if u get ur foot caught utr foot is going to get sore if u dont beleive methat I am half-mizo then I will say food in mizo: Chaw
@yt532em Well, for all you know, the dance may have come from Borneo.. Stop making claims without legitimate historical facts to back up your claims. Every dance is unique to the culture they come from, and it is reflected in the sound that accompanies the dance.
@Jennamomo: bro, you mean this people are Mizos. no, man. this is not Mizo costume and the performance itself is not Cheraw. i am a Kuki from Manipur, India. i know better than you, i think. yes, Mizos are the greatest bamboo dancers cos they even broke the world's Guinness book in 2003. they performed this with 30,000+ people and 700+ settings at the same place at the same time which is really epoch-making and shaking the world's traditional bamboo dancers. did you ever know this? check it out.

@ cchettry: so sorry for my misinformation for the number of the year. yes, you are right. i am sorry for that. actually, i myself read and forwarded that wonderful news and pictures to others in March last year. :-) and now i am the one who forgot it again. well, i admit i am a forgetful guy. but i am only 29. :-)
This is a dance Magunatip (Bamboo Dance) by the Murut in Sabah, Malaysia. This dance is a legacy passed down for generations from their ancestors. This dance tells the story of a knight went hunting human head. after the hero gets a human head, they will celebrate the heroes of this dance. even if it is the same with the dance in another country, but different story. nor is it just coincidence.
@vellary88: boooo.... you check out, MIZO PEOPLE, MIZORAM STATE IN INDIA are the BEST BAMBOO PERFORMERS. THEY BROKE THE WORLD'S GUINNESS BOOK IN 2003. just check it out, dude, for yourself. anyway, i am not a Mizo. :P
do you know of carbon dating? well modern tech reveals that filinoys are sui generis... they have malay and indonesian blood pero we dnt originat from them...
Now Shut up and watch.. Be proud if your an asian! It doesnt matter where it is originated .. Let the researchers handle it :)) (but it is more likely to be originated in the phillipines .. i have read already books of dances).
