It doesn't look very deep? What kind of wildlife would you expect to find in it?
@@maggiewright1781 Hi Maggie, it's deep (enough!) in the middle for toads and frogs tend to use shallow water for breeding, but there would be newts, dragonflies, damselflies and of course all the creatures that need insects or any mosquito larvae, such as larger insects, birds, amphibians and bats - they certainly take care of any likely mosquitoes :) Best wishes, Joel
In India, you do not have to do much to make a pond, all you need is one heavy rain, the rest is made by itself !! 🙃🙃
Haha! India has such natural beauty, we seem to have destroyed so much of ours in the UK, but hopefully people are gardening now with nature in mind rather than against it - thank you so much for your comment, appreciated :)

In the Philippines too!😅😂
Now, thats what im going to do. Dig a little and wait for the heavy rain from June to Dec! Rain will make it deep enough.😁😁

You and me both! Digging the foundation for my back garden extension was impossible for a mini digger. We had to constantly break up the stones with a jackhammer because the digger couldn't pull them up. It took 6 hours instead of 2. 😵
We have 1 foot of workable soil. It's awful.
All soils are workable im a kid and i did my pond thsts 4 metter long 2 metter wide and 1.2metter deep in a soil that my dad said it is too hard to do a pond in

I hope this is helpful to you - best wishes, Joel
Buy cheap land on a swamp, and dig a big gouge out of the middle, bottom-most part of your land. It will drain a lot of the swampy area into a pond-like area instead. Or wait until one of the trees in the swamp falls over, and it should look like a natural pond. Just dig it out more and you'll have a pond next to a fallen over tree's root ball. Likely already shaded because it is in a swamp with tall trees.
I buried a Rubbermaid tub in my garden, lined it with an old shower curtain, threw in some potted umbrella plants and a small pump, and lined the edges with rocks found on the property. The only maintenance I've given it is an occasional cleaning of the pump. It's in its 10th year and has outlasted a heavy plastic pond insert I bought at Lowe's! I live in North Florida.😎
Wow, that's pretty long-lived - well done :) Best wishes to you and yours in N Florida - Joel

Absolutely wish I was talented enough to pull this off!
I'd love to do this. We removed the one that was in our garden years ago because it attracted so many mosquitos to the garden. If we didn't get turned into a pepperoni pizza by the mosquitos I'd absolutely make one again.
Edit: Also the cats kept on catching the frogs and they'd die very slowly :(

love how the water hose was used, you can really use anything to give you an idea as to how big or small you want things to be.😀
Lovely. I didn't realize how much preparation goes into such a small pond!
Quick Question -- what do you do to prevent mosquitos? Would adding a small pump to keep the water moving help?
Hi Eleanor - thank you. The bats, birds, amphibians and larger insects (like dragonflies etc) will all feast on mosquitoes and their larvae. Also, re adding a pump, the native oxygenating plants, the floating leaved plants and low-nutrient subsoil used all keep the water aerated and clear :) There is a 3 part series on the channel showing in real-time how I made this pond and why the methods are used. Additionally, you might find this video helpful, it shows just a few of the many ponds created in this way, after they establish in a few weeks:

Add some fishes, they will eat the eggs.
We had only mosquitoes the first few months but as soon as the newts arrived they all got eaten.

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton yep definitely: I decided to take more of an interest in my garden so watched all the episodes of Garden Rescue for ideas, eventually swayed by your other channel, The Butterfly Brothers, to go for wild-life. I let my grass and the weeds grow last year and was amazed by how much better it looked without me doing a thing. Next step is to experiment with multiple single seating areas connected by a small path, water placed somewhere, and adding my own plants in those areas where the weeds thrived. The fun part, which I didn't realize to start with, is that I get to experiment with the garden every year.

I love that digging bar with the blade end. I hand dug a pond on my property a few years back where the ground was clay with rocks embedded in it. Nice for the final pond, which did not need a liner, but it means every scoop I dug out had to be fought for with a pick, and some angles were not easy to swing a pick at. I did have a digging bar but the flat end is less than 2 inches wide and it made for slow going. As a side note, if you have clay soil it does make for a very natural pond, but with no liner size limits you may end up thinking "just a little deeper, just a little wider, just another hour of digging today" and that's how the my plan of a three foot deep goldfish pond got a little out of hand and now I have an eight foot deep pond with a bass and some trout living in it.
In my country you don't need to build a pond

Hi Joel, thank you so much for your reply. Yesterday I watched a dragonfly come and go a few times which was so nice. I'll check the 3 part series! Best wishes!@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
You’re an incredibly hard worker, it’s inspiring.
Thank you for your kind comment, it's appreciated. If you wanted to see a few more of the many ponds I've made this way, and how they look when the plants have established, you can see the video here:

The birds, bats, amphibians and larger insects (dragonflies etc) that are attracted to these ponds all make a huge impact on any mosquitoes and their larvae too :) Best wishes, Joel
Your wildlife pond so beautiful😍,you're amazing, love from Malaysia❤
Fatima Farm thank you so much. Great to hear from you guys in Malaysia! 😁👏👍
It's nice pond but should put some flow & filter so that murky water will turn gradually clear & encourage more bio oxygen dissolved so microsystem in the water it's self can support living things in there 😘
Hi Zahid - sorry I missed your reply - the footage is when the pond was just finished so needed a day or two to settle - there are oxygenator plants in the pond and these will keep it clear. If fish are introduced then definitely a filter of electric type of course as they can mess up a still pond - many thanks for your comment Zahid, best wishes to you - Joel
Gorgeous and natural looking pond , recently I bought a medium pond liner , all I need to dig up a hole and put in there then decorate with plants and rocks ..exciting ..plenty rain in the UK so frogs will be happy 💕
Fantastic - if you need any advice, materials, plants, in fact everything you need to create these ponds then do drop us a line at www.wildyourgarden.com and we'll be happy to help and advise. Best wishes, Joel
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton thank you so much , I’ve found all infos from the link you provided 🙌🏽
Great video, love backyard ponds!
Rookie Adventures thank you! They’re certainly great for all forms of life! 😁
And to think I e been worried about soil sneaking into my current “all stone” pond gives me much better ideas for treating my excess overhang. Cutting it off! Great video.
Hi Glenda! :) Thank you for this, although I must point out that it's the poorer subsoils that you need for any soil IN the pond, the other soil is fine for around the edges and allows you to plant directly into it - this 3 part series showing how I made this pond and the reason this method is used is here:
czcams.com/video/lKrjMv6TMlU/video.html
Just wanted to make sure you weren't about to put topsoil in the pond as this will float about and add nutrients to the water, encouraging blanket weed etc. Hope this helps and thanks again, welcome to the channel! Best wishes - Joel
God Bless you and your family .. Bravo .Very nice ...Heart Touching..
Thank you so much - I really appreciate the comment Hassan.
Thank you for sharing the video, very interesting, quite entertaining, adding useful knowledge🙏❤
Thank you, so much :) There is more detailed knowledge on the "How To" instructional videos on the channel, you may find this video of some of the ponds I have created, that are now established, helpful too - I really appreciate your comment :)

Amazing work. True inspiration. Thanks a lot for sharing.
Thanks for the support - hope you enjoy the channel - best wishes, Joel
Beautiful job. Somebody gift this guy a wheel borough though lol
LOL - thank you. We do have about 8 wheelbarrows on the firm, but the steep steps at the rear of this client's garden meant none could be used - hence the buckets :/ I felt fitter afterwards ;)
Thank you, I will hope to make one of my own tomorrow!
love from Indonesia people
Thank you so much - and welcome! I hope you enjoy the channel Andika, best wishes - Joel
Uh, if the water does not flow, there will be a lot of mosquitoes and algae
苍蝶 there will be a few mosquitos but if you add oxygenating plants like Hornwort, it will help to keep the water perfectly clear
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton assertion is definitely a yes if you want to keep it perfect.
I have 2 outdoor pond tanks, there's more water flow in the larger tank, but it seems the goldfish and koi fish eat the mosquitoes and any larvae, if there is any. But water flow is definitely a nice feature for an outdoor pond.
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Get some mosquito larvae eating guppies or tetras
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton its better added to the mollies, guppies and other fishes😊😊😊😊😊
Your video has really helped me when I was building my giant Terrarium! Thanks a lot!
looks great and inspired some ideas to form in my noggins! I was thinking the pond might be in the way for gardening in the back corner over there. How is the pond doing in 2022 and was that ever a issue?
Hi Justin - this was the best place for the pond in this smaller garden, they're best in the sunniest spot and away from trees - I am yet to return to this pond and film it again as I work all over the country so it's difficult to return to the same place, but I do try - you can see just a few of the many others created using this method in this short video here, which might help and give some more ideas for you :)

wowzer! pretty awesome
Thank you Pinay - I really appreciate your encouragement :)
I would just like to take a minute to say this pond is absolutely AMAZING and you did a great job on it, and i would just like to say you are very very talented!
Thank you, that means a lot to me - I know there are a lot of negative comments but I think people expect these ponds to be for fish or koi in particular, but they are for nature above all and this method has worked without fail for over 15 years now - I really appreciate you taking the time, it makes all the difference :) Best wishes to you, Joel
I am thinking about making this for my parents thanks for this bid😀
Brilliant - that's great to hear - there is a 3 part series on the channel here for making this particular pond - so you won't have to try to keep up with the timelapse! ;) Best wishes, Joel
The need of a CONSTRUCTION JACKET while digging a hole is a must in UK well here, all you need are 2 hands and the rain. BOOM
I wanted to have a small pond in my garden ..... I will make it like this

Did you just use the soil you excavated in the pond or did you use a low nutrient substrate?
A bit of both Krisztian! 😁 I wasn’t able to excavate enough for the pond, so imported some low nutrient soils
I'm really addicted with this video !! I want a garden and pond like that !! 🥺🥺I wish, I could make it too 🥺🥺🥺 btw, I'm 15 and from India 🇮🇳

Hello Joel, do you ever have a problem with water wicking? I've built my pond using your technique with the underlay over the buytl liner. The pond loses gallons of water a day. The underlay came up to the edge of the pond, I now think I should have tucked it down leaving 2" to 3" of buytl around the edge to prevent water wicking away into the surrounding soil through the underlay.
Hi there - out on site at the moment - please feel free to send some photos to hazelwoodlandscapes@hotmail.com and I'll see what I can do to advise :) Best wishes, Joel
You need a capillary barrier. Dig a ditch around the pond and cover it completely with the butyl liner, then fill it with gravel and stones.
Great work the Flash!
