I love Madness, especially this song. I had a flat top haircut from the mid 80's until 1997! I had a grade 2 all over before I met my current partner in 98. I don't think we would have been together if I still had a flat top!
London, British Boot Company, Ska, Reggae, Dr Martens, Skinheads, Rude Boys, Mods, Camden Town, Solovair, Madness, The Selecter, The Specials, Desmond Dekker, Carnaby Street, Creepers shoes, P&O ferries, from Brussels to Calais, from Calais to Dover, from Dover to London, Prince Buster, Dandy Livingstone, Skatalites, The Beat... My gosh, this is ALL my life !
Great track. - I cried when my sister stood on my 7" of this when she was getting ready to go out dancing. A horrible looking pointy red stiletto heal smack bang on center groove.. snap.
Without wishing to bore... I was eleven when this unique, life-changing song had me sat down in wonder at the magic of music. Then I saw them on TOTPs... and Suggs and co set me off on a discovery of music and I've never looked back. True story xxx
Madness is heard on the radio today as it was 30 years ago.The best band,Very good themes, excellent video with a very strong image of Suggs with his gestures and dance and electric movements
This is a very sad song. The saxophone player I believe his name is Thompson, has a sister that had a relationship with a black guy leading to pregnancy lead into a baby. This song is about what they said to her. The saxophone player turned it into this song. It is a brilliant piece of music ship
So glad someone put the story up here, I think a lot of people think that he's talking about the BBC because of a comment he made on Top of the Pops once when he sang this. I wonder what the child is doing now, from what I heard it turned out okay in the end.
During the late 70s n early 80s sadly it was really frowned upon to have a bi racial relationship or baby...I had two friends that went through hell....I really don't think this song is condoning that...It's taking the p*ss more out of how ridiculous the racism was back then!! 💗
This is one of the first records I ever bought , I was 12, in the UK first year in secondary school (high school) and the kids were in to mods, rockers or Ska. I was into Ska. It's 2019 , I'm 52 years old and I still love this, a lot of good memories 🖤
@@markkeogh18 This is the album cover for Absolutely, you can see crombie coats, stay press trousers, DM's or brogues, a lot of kids into Ska wore the same.
I have got to say this... it's a fantastic song obviously. However, these are young lads, way, way before videos were en vogue. They were faultless, totally natural... It's a pioneering song and video. They created a brand new sound, a fun movement, a new fashion and I covered many, many of my exercise books in their art. I honestly believe Madness were as big a culture moving band as the Beatles. Paul xxx I do rate this song as one of my all time favourites
Couldn't agree with you more, Paul. Madness are living legends. They're my all-time favorite band and I'm so proud that Embarrassment was the first ever single I bought, aged 11. Im also proud of them being around still making great music.
What a tune loved it back then and now, never seen this video before,Suggs is superb, one of the best songs ever and one if the best groups ever no question
I was 9 when this was released. Love it just as much now as I did back then. I would say that I am a skinhead in a way because of the fact that my hair is clipper cut grade 1 and 2 all over and I share most of the ideology and music tastes. I don't dress that way though, just casual jeans, t-shirt and trainers mostly.
@ Solan Goose: Being a skinhead is not just about the haircut and it's certainly not about the way you dress, it's all about the ideology, way of thinking and what you believe in which is what makes you a skinhead or not... ;-)
@ Darcy: What's "insane" about someone once being 19 !!! be kinda impossible to grow old and not have once been 19 or any younger age for that matter... ;-)
@ Solan Goose: You're only as old as you feel... well mentally that is, not much you can do about the body though.... :-o In 1980 I was 16 and just like the old cliché goes "those were the best years of my life" but even now being old the mind is still young and daft as ever even though the body aint quite what it used to be and that to me is the most important thing, old age comes to us all eventually it how you choose to deal with it that's the most important thing... ;-)
This about Suggs' sister having a mixed race child and her family disowning her because of it which is awful, but this is a great song, one of the best.
@ Paige Crimp: Not quite, The song is about Lee's sister (the sax player) having a mixed race child and the family falling out over it... Happily though as Lee said a few years back the family has reconciled now and managed to put the past behind them... :-) PS: This aint just one of the best this for me is the very best Madness song of them all... ;-)
@ seekah1: To be perfectly honest then for me Madness never made one bad song in either their original singles or albums of the early years but personally while I reckon this is their best single of all I'd have to say that "Absolutely" was their best album, brilliant tracks on there like "In The Rain", "ERNIE", "You Said" and of course "Embarrassment"... :-)
I’m 55 this year and it only seems like yesterday heard this for the 1st time. Madness are the top notch and how music should be.
54 this year n ya got it spot on... gotta add the cliche... They don't make 'em like this anymore... They REALLY don't!
Jayden TV 37 french fan of this so british ...and i’m 70!
Madness are brilliant because they are a load of fun but also touch on some deep issues of the time, such is the power of music ❤
So GOOD! It is incredible how good this song is.
happy times , miss the 80's, 50 this year, One of the Greatest Bands of the 80's, will play till if i reach 100, thanks for sharing :-)

Nearly 40 years old and still a great song. Played it to my 15 year old and he loves it. There is hope for the next generation.
Yeah, I do the same for my two boys, they love it.
who actually cares?

You lived the best era no phones no cameras no people who get offended by a joke or something stupid and proper music 60 70 80 90 tunes
The saxophone solo..❤
I would travel across the world just to thank these awesome people for this song
Great track. - I cried when my sister stood on my 7" of this when she was getting ready to go out dancing. A horrible looking pointy red stiletto heal smack bang on center groove.. snap.
So very pleased I was a part of this era, worth every wrinkle! 😀
Me too , big fan then even more so now seen them over the years playing at various places , isle of Wight June 2019 still as good as ever :)
Would pay good money to see madness
i'd pay 5p to see em
It’s about a mixed race pregnancy in the family. Which was a big thing in families in the 80 s
She was also a kid and unmarried. It wasn't just the race
But foremost race... And Madness where good friends with The Specials.
were
What a fantastic band with fantastic music and fantastic lyrics. A real gem of British music. We should cherish this band.
TheTuneful we all do
Without doubt Madness's best track
👌
Definitely 👍 💯
Hell yeah
Just saw them in Boston, USA and they smashed this like they were lads again
Greetings from England 🏴 London 🇬🇧.. Boston.
Without wishing to bore... I was eleven when this unique, life-changing song had me sat down in wonder at the magic of music. Then I saw them on TOTPs... and Suggs and co set me off on a discovery of music and I've never looked back. True story xxx
Madness = young lads talking about what they see going on around them in London
Madness = 80's grime
Except it's got a proper tune, played by real musicians, on real instruments.
There! I've said it!
I AM old.
High quality musicianship. No one can touch them. Unique.
My favourite Madness song
so happy I grew up with madness
God I remember all the parties we had where Madness were constantly played....Great times!!! 😅💗
@ Skye Mc Kensie: So do I, but then that's cos the last party was just last weekend and Madness was of course still being played... ;-)

An amazing song. Totally unique. Love the saxophone especially.
Love Madness still playing the music today and I'm 51 xx.
Such a beautiful track, still gives goosebump excitement after all these years, sums up the best Madness sound imo.
The older it gets the better it sounds; can''t stop loving Madness!!
Madness, the specials and bad manners were great British bands. 👍👍👍
Robert Forward I fort you said English bands sorry it's British not being recist but two of the special s are black
Brilliant lyrics, brilliant melody, brilliant sax - one the best from the era! And how can 7 people not like it?
Troll!
Theme song for COVID-19...stay away, we don't want you anymore....don't come near our door...
If I had to choose one Madness tune to take to the desert island, it would be this one. Deeply personal and the official video is utterly superb.
Jesus thank you dad for raising me with this🙌
Absolute naturals and amazingly talented. The backdrop to my youth during early 80s.
Go on Lee !! Legendary sax player
f..king classic .Suggs was born in my home town. xx

SUGGS IS FROM MY HOME TOWN OF HASTINGS. GOD BLESS MADNESS XX

what a song! what a time! Ska-2Tone. Madness-specials-bad manners- selecter-etcetera etcetera. Music meant so much more!

Were Madness Ska? Every song seemed to belong to a different genre. This track is basically Motown.
@@markkeogh18 Yes, we called Madness Ska, most of the band dressed Ska.
