  • Well this was a pain… Welcome to part 1 of me trying to get an iFlash into my 15GB 3rd gen iPod. I partially broke it and almost lost my mind in the process.

    ah man, thank you so much for this. I was losing my marbles, I get obsessed when things don't work, especially when others have made it work. I was extremely despondent and about ready to dump it all in the trash, but this 2003 iPod has enormous sentimental value to me. I finally got the thing working! Quick recap for anyone struggling here - you will need iflash solo card + 4g adapter (also works for 3G) and EITHER (the hard to find /overpriced) usb/firewire dual cable OR 30 pin dock - USB plus 30 pin doc - firewire plus wall power adapter. Important - THE FW CONNECTION to the computer is completely f**ked and useless who knows why - so 1) connect via USB to windows or virtual windows (make sure virtual windows can see/is controlling the iPod usb connection , not the Mac) 2) let windows iTunes restore software 3) disconnect, restart you should see a 'connect to firewire' graphic) 4) connect the FW cable (either to the Mac or just the power adapter, surprisingly either way works, who knows what it's doing but it's not communicating with the computer) and let it finish setting up - you should now see the 'select language' intro screen 5) reconnect to Mac via USB only , follow instructions from iTunes and you should be good to go. I tried a SDHC card and it was slooow..put a 64GB SDXC and it's thumb drive speed now - more than fast enough. I'm sure 128GB will work, I don't have one here...I am sealing this thing up now before I jinx it. By the way I used Mac OSX Mojave / Windows 10 under Parallels Desktop for Mac. Your mileage may vary I have no idea. JUST BE PREPARED TO LOSE A DAY/NIGHT OR TWO - THIS IS A MASSIVE HEADACHE , YOU HAD BETTER WANT IT BECAUSE IT CAN BE A REAL TIME BURGLAR. Good luck.

    The third Gen can definately be flash modded with a Mac to 64 GB formatted to Apple partition Map. Does not need to be windows formatted! Just saying!
    If you want to sync to a Mac and restore. Untick all boxes under options first, hit sync, then hit restore. That way you can restore over USB with a Mac! Just format the SD or Micro SD card to 'Apple Partition Map' first in your Macs card reader.

      Hey, what a pity I have not seen your comment before! It could saved my time creating images with Disk Utility from original Toshiba drive, installing CCC, installing super duper and so on...
      In my case I have used 32GB Compact Flash card (Sandisk Extreme, 60MB/s), which was formatted as Mac OS Extended format (Journalled).
      I followed your steps and unchecked all boxes and synced just one song. After I have restored my iPod 3G with hard reset (Menu+Play) on iPod itself I was able to do the restore. Apple iPod Dock Connector to USB 2.0 & FireWire Cable was used. Thanks!!!

    This is geniunely my favorite iPod series next to DankPods's videos. I knew you did some PPC work before (never had a PPC Mac so not interested), but this series is very enjoyable to watch. You earned a sub.

    Just found the channel.... Just ordered a refurbished Mac Pro 4,1 that I plan on upgrading slowly throughout the COVID19 stuff. I plan on flashiing the firmware, upgading to mojave, installing an RX 560 and setting up an NVME bootdrive. CAN'T WAIT! You don't get as many views as some channels, but keep at it man. Cool hacking/tinkering channel... PCE

    Help, when doing this, do you need to actually have it connected to Usb and firewire at the same time? or is it possible to use an usb cable and then connect it to fire wire?

    • @HrutkayMods
      @HrutkayMods  Před 3 lety

      FireWire if you need charged while syncing otherwise USB is fine

    Iflash makes a SD card IDE 44 pin adapter. So you don’t have to use the jenky 2nd adapter. The 3rd gen is definitely picky as to the equipment you use.

    I have one of those iPod 3rd Gen on great conditions in a drawer because the hard drive die a few years ago, I rather spend the money on an iPhone 5SE 120GB and filled with FLAC files than buy a new battery, IDE to SD adapter and the SD card, and I can use it for more stuff than just music. for daily work out I use my iPod Nano 5 Gen.

    I am having the problem with two 3rd gen iPods not responding once they are powered down. I have to reset (menu + play) every-time I want to power it up. I can't find any solution online.

    How do you install an ssd in a 2nd gen iPod classic?

    • @HrutkayMods
      @HrutkayMods  Před 10 měsíci +1

      You just install it with a converter... SSDs can't be over a certian size I want to say 10GB? due to the firewire controller. If you can format it with an image and all your music on it though.. it might work with bigger but it also has a firmware partiton size limit which makes it hard to work with
