One of my favorite tips from our last move was to create a Day 1 box. A roll of paper towels, a pair of scissors, hand soap, paper plates and cups, a couple of trash bags, a container of Clorox wipes. Anything that we would need from the get go to get unpacked and going. It was the box we took with us (not with the movers) and first box in the house. It made a WORLD of difference.

I read this in a book. Since your labels are color coordinated, you can get coordinating balloons and put the matching balloon in each matching room, so the movers will just look for the balloon that matches your label. This especially works for multiple bedrooms and bathrooms.

I used to work at one of our local grocery stores in the produce dept and we were happy to save boxes for folks who were moving. Here's a tip! If you want heavier boxes for your dishes - make sure to ask for tomato boxes or egg boxes (from the dairy dept). These are SUPER STURDY and will protect your breakables!

I like to put books in a rolling suit case for easier transportation. No lifting heavy boxes of books! 😁 And I put suran wrap around my utensil tray to keep everything in there secure. That way when unpacking you just take the suran wrap off and place the tray in the drawer. 👍🏼

One of my favorite moving tips - pack a necessities box that goes in a place that it won’t get lost among everything else (in the trunk or backseat of your car) and fill it with everything you need for the first night/morning. Include items such as toothbrushes, prescription meds, pet food, kids’ pjs and change of clothes for the next day as well as other important things like the coffee pot (with coffee, mugs, creamer/sugar, etc.). Another great tip is to pack all sheets & pillows together and make each person’s bed in the new space right away. Even if it’s just the mattress on the floor for the first night, it is so awesome at the end of the day to already have your bed ready and waiting instead of digging through boxes to find everyone’s bedding when you’re exhausted from a day of moving and unpacking!

My sister works at Kroger. The best size boxes I got from there were the boxes that the plastic shopping bags came in. Those boxes measure 12¼ × 11¾ × 9¾.
Call and ask them to save you those boxes. It saved a ton of money. I used them for books, school supplies, smaller kitchen gadget, toiletries, DVDs, video games, BOOKS, knickknacks and toys. I love the fact that they were a uniform size and I was easily able to play tetris with the move.

  • @rebellanne8835

Thanks for the tips, Kimmy. We always have used towels and linens for breakables. You can also use washed clothes for packing stuff that easily breaks. Take a pair of socks for example and put one inside of a glass and put the glass in the other sock. It's easiest with men's socks, but kid's socks are perfect for little breakable decorations. And you save so much space and money, because you can pack a lot without bubble wrap or newspaper and things that you have to get rid of after the move. And we never had a breakage. Only downside is that it wrinkles up the clothes some, but it is very efficient. 😁

  • @samantham5442

  • @confidentgrace

This is a great video. One tip re: box labeling is to NOT write what’s in the box. That makes things easy to be stolen. A lesson we learned the hard way.
Instead, give the box a number. And you keep an itemized list on paper or your phone of what’s inside. A mover will only see the box belongs in whatever area of your home, but not know exactly what’s inside.
You could also use colored, unlabeled labels (or pieces of duct tape) to pack your boxes. Movers won’t know what could potentially be in the box until they arrive at your new home. Put the coordinating color label/tape on the wall or door of each area, so they know where the boxes belong.
This also helps if you’ll have workers in your home (new or old) while you’re not there. This is where we learned our lesson.
    Happy moving!

I've been using liquor boxes the last 3 times I've had to move. They are great. Love the ones with dividers for glassware and knick knacks. Yes, without the dividers, great for books because they are sturdy and not too heavy when full.

I move almost yearly (military) and it’s way better to buy new boxes then used boxes especially if your moving across the country. We’re preparing for another move this June and I buy supplies now (Jan) and that helps with the cost. But we have a 5 bedroom with a storage unit and never spent more then $400 for boxes and tape.

Good luck with your upcoming move!

  • @nspindlow5046
    @nspindlow5046 Před 4 lety +6

I used banana boxes, couldn't get fruit boxes, I just cut and taped a piece of cardboard from another type of box over the holes. The boxes are sturdy and took up the least amount of space and I could stack them all the way to the ceiling. I could even get 6 boxes in the backseat of my mustang.
I even numbered each box and as I was packing that box I made a detailed list on notebook paper. Made unpacking and finding things so much easier for me.
The handles and limited size also made it easier for me , as a woman, to be able to carry boxes without relying on anyone else.
Wish I'd had the labels, I used different colored crayons. And used construction paper taped in each room so when we had help with delivery they knew where that box wrnt.

I wanted to pass along a few more moving tips we used.
In addition to the color coded labels you put on the boxes we got colored poster board with same colors as the labels, cut those & made signs that read Bedroom #2, #3, etc.and taped tose on the wall outside each room. It made it so easy for the movers to get boxes to the right room.
Also, we taped the remote controls to each tv & gaming system to the back of the tv's.
Thank you for these great tips! We are not moving again for a very long time...lol. 💕

Those totes (ikea has those also) I used for our cross country move and they were great for bedding/towels to use right away. I got inflatable mattresses at Walmart for like $8 and they were great. We had to wait almost 2 weeks for our stuff to arrive with the mover. I also use that one week worth of clothing method. I put outfits together for my son. Top and bottom folded together. Plus when taking our essentials in the car. We have each our 1 week worth of closing in each suitcase/travel bag with essential toiletry. I love those labels. We will move next year and that bears writing on all boxes with markers.

When looking for free moving boxes, I do my best to find them NOT broken down. Makes a huge difference in wasted time putting them together, saves on tape supply, but obviously get boxes that have strong tape. I will ask business for their boxes and it has worked every time. HUGE time and supply saver.

Ever since I learned that you can get roaches from cardboard boxes esp from grocery stores (they love the corrogated sections of the cardboard - makes perfect places for laying their eggs), I am super paranoid of using cardboard boxes. I usually use storage totes from Home Depot , XXL clear storage zipper bags, & vacuum bags. Can be a bit pricy but, my sanity is worth the cost. I would die if I got roaches!! 😣

Same! I’m getting ready for a move and debating over how many boxes to get and when to get them. You can rent storage tubs from some moving companies for a great price, but that’s a lot tougher if you’re wanting to use them to pack an entire house. I also don’t want to buy a ton of extra storage tubs. In the meantime, I’m sorting and decluttering so it will be easier to pack as the time to move draws closer.

I volunteer in a charity bookshop (like goodwill but just books) and we have a "surplus" system where any books that are still sellable but not in the best condition (think what amazon or Ebay would rate as "good" when you look at second hand books) go in boxes and are sold at a heavily discounted rate or are purchased by a man who resells them at a wholesale price. There is a fruit store across the road and we always get boxes from them for free. We have found that if you put stiff brown paper on the base of a banana box were the hole is it can reinforce it. I've never seen the bottom fall out of one yet.

My tip for moving: if you have people moving you (friends, movers etc) then stick the labels on top door for the room. Let them know what room bedroom 3 is that way there is no confusion. Also if you are able to label where big furniture is supposed to be with masking tape it takes away the question of where it’s supposed to go when you already have 30 other things happening at the same time.

Hey Kimmy, thanks for your inspiration on laundry stripping, I tried it myself with some interesting results. I even gave you a shout out in the video. I really appreciated the reminder after I'd seen it somewhere else.

  • @rev.guillermoescalonahonor2163

All great tips. Thanks!!! P.S. I’ve used the box labeling/ color system. I add the same color sticker to each room door that way if others are helping they’ll know where the specific box goes. 😉❤️🙏😇 Ara Escalona

This is great timing. We will probably be moving the end of October an hour and a half away. I want to be organized and have the cleaning done as much as possible so hopefully I won’t have to spend more than one day in the old house finishing the clean up. Any ideas to pack mugs my husband has at least 50 mugs. With COVID we have been getting some deliveries and we are keeping most of the packaging for our move. I can’t wait for more tips. We have lived here 6 years and when we moved in we first had stuff from our 2 bedroom condo (local) and a week later the u-haul u-pack boxes were delivered from our 4 bedroom house in Kentucky. Craziest move I have ever done. Two weeks in KY packing and closing on the house and then two days to pack and move the condo.

My tip is make sure to use plastic bins for all pictures & keepsakes. We made that mistake and unfortunately lost some irreplaceable photos. I never plan to move again but if by horrible chance Gods has other plans I will use plastic air tight for all keepsakes and pictures :) I'm holing you will still be posting vlogs when you move. Look how tall Jonah is!!!!! Time sure does fly

Kimmie, love the tips! My oldest moved away for college last year and I made her use the label system along with the zipper ikea bags and clear storage bins. My husband said she was the only kid without cardboard boxes to toss and was able to quickly unpack and set up. 😊

I've used boxes from the produce department in the past, and had no problem, HOWEVER I saw another video recently where they advised against that due to the possibility of insects.
Ya don't want some big gnarly spider from Brazil or wherever hitchhiking to your new house!
Just something to be aware of.👍🏻

I like to use my laundry baskets for one set of sheets, blanket, coffee maker (if you drink coffee), coffee, creamer/sugar packets, stir sticks, granola bars (for breakfast or a snack)...anything you will need for the first night (shower stuff, towels, paper towels, paper cups, toilet paper--very important). I always left a full roll of toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap in the house where I was living. Not everyone thinks ahead and I wanted the new owners to feel welcomed.
