Yamabe Toshiro 9 Dan was a genius of the 20th century. He had a powerful and exciting style, 奔放"unrestrained" and 変幻"transformation" where phrases associated with his style, the Japanese original phrases having deeper and more positive meanings than my poor translation! Along with Hideyuki Fujisawa and Takeo Kajiwara, he was one of the postwar "3 crows", that being a phrase used to mean 3 outstanding young players. Although he was in the challenger leagues for many years and became the challenger for various titles, he was not blessed with a title. His two most representative games, one against Hashimoto Utaro 9-dan in 1950 in which Yamabe started with the Tengen point, and another against Go Seigen 9-dan in 1953, in which Yamabe showed a dynamic squeeze and went on to win. I made a video of the game with Go Seigen 9-dan for the AGA CZcams channel.

I cannot stress enough how valuable your channel is to the Western go world. If you don't speak Japanese/Chinese/Korean, commentaries and reviews by professional players are nearly impossible to find on the internet, so every video like this is a little treasure to me.
You are an experienced 9 dan professional who also happens to have English as native language - which grants you the completely unique ability to teach Western players at this level. The fact that you decided to do so, for FREE, for all of us, on CZcams, makes me feel so lucky and shows that you are a great person. Thank you for your hard work, I hope you know that it really is much appreciated.

Yes, I do enjoy the old games. They have a familiar feeling.

I think a proverb that a lot of current go players forget is that you should attack for profit, not to kill. There are many players that play super agressively just to trick the opponent and kill. However I love how wonderfully both of you play, I can see solid connections everywhere and very interesting plays that I never thought of.

Congratulations on what must be one of your favorite games. I imagine that in that situation I would suddenly be feeling like I may actually belong among such strong players, whereas before that, I would have a serious case of impostor syndrome.

Thank you! I am excited about my recent learning, based on your commentary, as well as using Katago to review my own games.

I wonder, Michael, if this was your first win against a 9-dan in a serious game?

My win against Kiyonari was a few months earlier (see link), and there was another win against Kada Katsuji, both 9P, so this was the 3rd.
