- A notable quirk about the 2000's was its popularity of a variety of gang films, especially amongst younger men. Considering the stereotypes, it's easy to see the appeal - especially if the media can convey a stylish and cool tone, and deliver on either involving political intrigue or some slick action.
As the Grand Theft Auto franchise ascended amongst gaming audiences, it captured the wave of that gang popularity found in movies and TV, and at times we could even see that transfer into games made based on fictional depictions of gangs. One such example of that is The Getaway series, a briefly-lived gaming franchise inspired by gangs in Britain, and developed by SIE London - a Sony studio, now known as Sony Computer Entertainment London. But for what would seem to be a successful formula,
The Getaway's life as a franchise was cut short abruptly, never making it past a decade. What happened to The Getaway? We'll take a look in this video.

I never played The Getaway 2 but the first was an absolute classic! Mark Hammond was that dude and the fact that you replay all the missions from the cops perspective was just dope...
I remember having this game forever and not being able to beat it cuz I didn’t know how to heal like who the hell knew this whole time all you had to do was lean on a wall and your health regenerates

The first one was brilliant. I felt so tense and dark..the story was raw and felt like you shouldn't be playing it..real cars and locations (sort of) I recognised being a Londoner made it epic as well

@@mujari Lol! If there was any franchise that deserved a current tech remake, it's this one. So much lost potential! And the difficulty was VERY high for the original Getaway, that I really remember. A true gaming challenge.

Black Monday switched to GTA style controls. At the time I didn't really like it, as the first Getaway felt unique as apposed to another GTA clone, but having played both recently it does make the game more playable. Also BM just felt like a rehash of the original game, even though it was an improvement overall.

@@mcrecordings Not really. You can only tilt your camera a little bit using the right thumbstick. Other than that the buttons were changed too i guess? But i don't see how using different buttons to get in and out of the car makes the game unique?
@@Fulllife3.2 In the first Getaway you could do stuff like operate your indicators, which was kinda useless but an example of what I mean that they had their own ideas, and weren't going for a GTA knock-off.
I used to play Black Monday when I was 12, I used to play it again. I remember there was a spawn spot for a TVR Tuscan. I used to love tearing up the streets of London in that. I'd definitely play a new Getaway, no doubt!
Tvr tuscan, peugeot 406 from taxi, lancia stratos and much more were cool secret cars from that game.

I loved the first Game, played the hell out of it. Loved the plot, the game was fun, it took me years to find out about leaning against the walls to heal.
This game had its own touch! Sure im also GTA fan, but i remeber i would play san Andreas then i would switch over to The Getaway on the same day, all the time!! I really enjoyed both games!!
SA is my favorite in the GTA series as a whole & seeing this video about The Getaway has brought back so many nostalgic memories for me. Would love for this IP to be revived but I’m aware that the chances of Sony rebooting the series is slim to none

I had both games and they were both phenomenal. The story was so good it could have been a film.
I liked both games. They were heavily flawed but I enjoyed the stories and the characters. I love would for this series to come back.

I love the getaway 1 and 2. IMO black monday was much better than first one with small improvements. I wish they could bring back the getaway maybe someone else buy IP and make multi-plaform like sleeping dogs.

Loved The Getaway 1 to 2. I would love to play a Getaway 3 on any system today. What surprised me was the black Monday had alternative endings of sorts.

This game changed how I view games. The shootouts and the way got hurt and had to heal was a masterpiece for its time
The 1st game was amazing back then. Had some issues but the way the story played out was worth it. Never played black Monday though

Black Monday was a let down for me. Not story wise, but gameplay. I don’t know what they changed but the frame rate was seriously off putting on the second one with regular drop spikes when driving too fast

I only played the first one and completed the story as a kid, it was iconic to me. I especially appreciated the health mechanic in that there was no HUD but physical indications of your character's health. A truly overlooked game which I think would see great success today in a modern post-queen era with a story around corruption and the changing guard and a grand scheme that unfolds from simple to complex in many facets.
Personally I’d love to see another getaway game. I enjoyed the first 2 games for their story lines and presentation. If they can do that but get the gameplay mechanics up to scratch then I’d say they are on to a winner 👌🏼

It absolutely has a place. The first one was epic. I kept re doing the last mission as the cop as it was the only way to have the vectra. At the time of the game that was a high end car lmao but yeah so many good memories playing countless hours. I must have completed the story a good few times too. Just leaning on walls to recover health, I remember the first mission felt like something out of lockstock. A vw gold mk3 with a body kit hidden in a car park. I knew my way round the entire map and used it to practice when learning to drive. Just a great game. Bring it back!

Because when Shu become president of WWS he started to cut down every UK developer Sony has built over time and he only cared about US studios. Shu wanted London to focus on EyePet, family gimmicks (Wonderbook) and SingStar. Japan Studio was doomed to make irrelevant small games nobody cared about.
Shu should stay with indies where he belongs. Phil Harrison's legacy may not be perfect but at least he pushed for big games from all regions unlike what Shu did. I will not miss him in charge of first party games. He was not good for UK devs. I'm very hopeful about Hermen Hulst as head of WWS. SIEE is taking over PlayStation again since pre-PS2 era. Shawn Layden and SIEA lost the internal power. Thank god.
Btw, The Getaway is not coming back but a new blood inside London Studio is building a team called New Entertainment. Ben Furneaux was previously lead principal designer from 2017 to 2019. He was recently promoted as creative director of New Entertainment at London Studio, he is in his mid 30's now. He believes it's time to bring back the innovative part of the studio on storytelling and is a fan of The Getaway. They are making an unannounced innovative project for mainstream audiences. But since he now became creative director they are still in early stages and don't even have a game director yet.

The first game is one of my favorite games of all times. Brilliant plot, atmosphere, hardcore gameplay. This should be remastered.

I was a huge The Getaway and Black Monday fan. I still have the poster up that came with the game. I hope one day they will revisit and make a third.
The original was great! My sister and I used to quote the characters all of the time. I originally played the demo, and I was hooked ever since. I believe I bought it when it launched, and loved every minute of it. I remember seeing the E3 coverage for the third game. I was hurt when I found out it was cancelled. I highly doubt that it ever makes a comeback. :(

The Get Away remaster would be fkn awesome, loved this game as a kid.

@Video games Bloke yeah i agree with you again. I got my ps2 in 2001 cos i remember gta 3 being my 1st game. I remember dad buying me the getaway for my birthday and he told me its a new game. Id never heard of it before but i lived on it. It took me a while on how to replenish the health though. I kept dying on the gallery level. Black monday was good but wasnt as good as number 1. There is a trailer for getaway 3 which was supposed to be released years ago but i dont know why they stopped production. If they remastered this game i would personally go out to get a ps4 just to play it. There is money to be made! Just wish that someone would follow it through.

I own and loved both games, they are everything that I love about British crime dramas! I think with the right story and some direction from someone with a "Guy Ritchie Mentality"; it could definitely come back today!

Anyways, back in the day, my baby boomer mother had all of our 16 mm (or maybe it was 8 mm? I forget - it was all from the ‘60s-‘80s) family home footage films professionally transferred to VHS by a specialized company…
The thing about footage that old is that there was never audio on it, so it makes it more boring to watch in silence. I took the original VHS tapes they gave us and hooked up a second VCR myself and somehow managed to set music from CDs to all of it (don’t ask me how I did it, because I won’t be able to remember, not that you’d care about such old tech haha lol).
And then I duped a bunch of copy VHS tapes for family members. Later on, when blank DVDs became a thing, I transferred the first recording with audio to DVDs and distributed those, since VHS wears down so fast.
I never once thought of trying to figure out a way to record movies that we would rent from Blockbuster to VHS or DVD though! lol.
That is really fascinating that you can hook up a PlayStation 2 and record your gameplay on to VHS! Very clever of you!
I have an Elgato capture card myself for a CZcams gaming channel I made under a different account (“HeartCooksBrain DS2”), to make a Dark Souls 2 Blind LP, and I’ve always wondered if that would work to record gameplay off of PlayStation 2 games. Doing it for PS3 was already a pain in the butt though.
I always thought that it would be fun to do an LP of either The Getaway, or the Fatal Frame serious I have.
It’s been so long since I’ve played The Getaway and its sequel that it would be pretty much be blind again at this point, and I only played a tiny bit of Fatal Frame before I put it down, because I almost shat myself in fear hahah! It is the scariest video game I’ve ever played in my life.

P.S. Did you keep those VHS tapes of your gameplay from the PS2? That would be fun to watch sometimes I would think… It recorded audio too, right?
I would like to see this series of games continue and perhaps Sony should remake the original games and make them on the Unreal Engine game engine with new graphics into 4K. If SCEL make the third game available, I hope that they will make the series on all platforms. That would SCEL (Sony Computer Entertainment London) a ton of revenue. Also they could make London bigger and moddable on the PC version like Rockstar does with the GTA series :).
Loved the game. It absolutely nails the London look and feel. It's amazing how detailed it still is. It's a shame the camera was shit. If it had a decent camera it would have been great.

I absolutely loved the first one. It was so amazing and fun. I was and still am a die hard GTA fan, but this was a cool break from those. I remember it taking me forever to beat the police station level because of the UK difference in labeling floors compared to the US. I loved the cars especially. The TVR at the end was the highlight for me.
If they made another one with todays technology the outcome would be fantastic
The absence of HUD and ANY Infos made this game so great in my opinion.
Also, and correct me if im wrong: I cant think of any game that gave that Gangster vibe such a big meaning as The Getaway: You really felt the desperation from Mark Hammond in having to kill people for his old mafia boss, or else his son dies.

I rented this from blockbuster i was 9 at the time (my parents of course) when i got home it worked for 2 hours then it never loaded again. I was up alllll night inserting the disc trying to make it work! 4 days passed and it finally loaded and played for another day until i had to return it back to blockbuster 😂 this game was epic though! I l remember it like it was yesterday.

I got 1 and 2. I love this game It was revolutionary. Honestly I like 1 and 2 better than GTA 3.... but GTA VC and after surpassed it. Still awaiting The Getaway 3.. PS5 Maybe?!?
Getaway was ahead of its time. And I don’t remember anyone talking about racism when the game was out. Everyone basically said “it’s like gta but not as polished and the realism hampers the game more than it helps.” If anything, everyone loved the realistic dialogue and story.

I remember not having a memory card and always getting my progress reset, it got to the point where I knew where every enemy was going to be and only once did I beat the game in one sitting when I was like 9

That reminds me of Nintendo, having to leave the system on overnight when you went to sleep any time you were deep into a long game so you didn’t have to start over later, like super mario brothers 3.
I have the get away black Monday on my ps2 .. because it’s nostalgic 😭❤️ and they give it another try . It might just be another Sony’s BEST
