  • In this video, I go over the 5 best Diets for patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. These diets have all been used by me in my clinic and have helped other Hashimoto's patients lose weight and feel better.
With all the information out there it can get confusing on which diet you should be following... this video will help you understand which diet you should be focusing on by tailoring it to YOUR body.
    The diets I go over:
    1. The elimination diet or food sensitivity diet
    - Who should use this diet? those with multiple food allergies, post nasal drip, acid reflux or history of asthma/eczema
    2. The autoimmune paleo diet or the autoimmune protocol Diet (abbreviated AIP diet)
    - Who should use this diet? Not everyone! I recommend patients who have a personal history of multiple autoimmune conditions or those who have failed less restrictive diets
    3. The gluten-free diet
    - Who should use this diet? Most patients should at least consider going gluten free, dairy free and soy free if they have Hashimoto's. This is THE place to start.
    4. The paleo diet
Who should use this diet? Those with a history of depression, anxiety, gut imbalances or acne.
This is also another great place to start
    5. The low FODMAP's Diet
Who should use this diet? Those who have a diagnosis of SIBO or yeast overgrowth or those with who experience gas/bloating or abdominal distention after meals.
3 Diets to Avoid With Hashimoto's:
    1. Low-fat diets
    2. Very low carbohydrate diets or nutritional ketosis
    3. Very low-calorie diets
All three of these can lead to worsening thyroid function!

I've had Hashimoto's for about 50 years. Tried SO many diets
The only one that has worked for me is the Carnivore diet
The past few months, I've been doing OMAD also and finally sleeping well after so many years of struggling with that. Carnivore gets rid of inflammation, among other things. I don't take nearly as much thyroid meds either

Sir,YOU ARE A BLESSING. I finally feel like someone is listening to my problems. There is so little research done on this topic and most of the doctors are not ever aware of the treatment plan.I am a Dentist myself and I know from a first hand experience from suffering hashimoto's and how little the doctors knew of this condition. All the linkages from urticaria- to throat inflamation due to exertion- to joint pain and depression, weight gain,weakness-everything finally has makes sense.Thank you....Best wishes from India.

I've had Hashimoto's Thyroiditis for many years, and had pretty much accepted that I'd be on thyroid supplements for the rest of my life. I recently discovered the ketogenic diet plus intermittent fasting, and have found it to be the ONLY way that I lose weight since the limited timing of feeding and restriction of carbs prevents my insulin from spiking. I've been doing research (primarily Dr. Eric Berg, Dr. Ken Berry, and Dr. Isabella Wenz) who are all respectable experts, but I also respect Dr. Child's opinion, so now I am confused about whether or not the Keto diet (low carb, high fat, moderate protein) is a good diet for my thyroid, in the long run. I'm thinking I will continue my course since I'm consistently losing the weight, but perhaps scale back later to more of an autoimmune paleo diet later. I am already gluten-free, soy-free, and pretty much sugar and refined starch free, and don't plan to change this. I'm not sure that this video properly discusses WHY a low carb diet would be bad for people with Hashimoto's, though. I just found an article by Dr. Amy Myers, who suggests for those who want to do Keto, to try a “modified” keto diet, where you eat at least 50g of carbs per day. No adverse effects on thyroid hormone production were found at this level of carb intake. I'd be interested to know what Dr. Child's thinks about this.

No amount of research will give you a definitive answer because there isn't one. It really depends on your body. Some people do well on it and others don't.

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's about 30 years ago and I think I may have had it for 20 years before that diagnosis was made. Up until recently, no doctor has ever told me that diet could mitigate the effects this disease! By sheer accident, I stumbled upon LCHF and Keto about 18 months ago and I immediately adopted this way of eating. I lost 25 kg in 12 months and the 24 hr a day hunger went away the moment I reduced my carb intake and increased my fat consumption. I was diagnosed as a Type 2 Diabetic a little over a year before I started LCHF and within a month I was off Metformin and my BGL returned to normal. I have more stamina now at 63 years of age than I had in my 30's. However, I did not know that people with Hashimoto's should never eat low fat. I don't know how many times I did Weight Watchers and was successful in losing weight for a while but then it all came back again. I was always hungry because I was still eating too many carbs. Having listened to your video, I shall tweak my LCHF diet to see if I can gain some improvement. I have been LCHF since Jan 2017 but for the last six months, I have not lost any weight. I think I need to lose another 5kg but most of all, I would just like to have optimal health going into old age. Thanks for steering me in the right direction, Dr Childs :D

I am not counting calories, I'm eating when I'm hungry and eating a lot of food...but the food I'm eating is healthy. I was surprised to find today that I've only eaten 950 calories and yet I feel satisfied. I'm not hungry. Is it ok to eat so little calories as long as I'm feeling satisfied and not hungry?

AM a little better but not back where I was four mos ago. THis STARTED flr me with dental work...two courses of antibiotics detroyed my gut flora and got candida. I also could not eat well due to dental pain and lost 20lbs in 3 months I suppose I was eating 700 to 800 calories and just could not eat more.I felt worse and worse and now I think I gave myself hypothyroidism and I know for certain the antibiotics caused the candida that is hard for me now to get rid of....grrrr! LAter, when I could almost not walk or move was tested for thydoid and had low thyroid so was put on med for that. I would say my energy is up 25%, not so great. My dr assures me it will increase now slowly. Have started having lots of hair loss. I am waiting to see if I settle down and will use the last diet, very restrictive though.

I was diagnosed with hashimoto's about a year ago and I still have many of the symptoms but mostly unable to lose weight despite my efforts. My doctor won't do anything for me because my TSH levels are "normal". Based on the information you provided I think a paleo diet would be the best for me since I have asthma and eczema. However I'm vegetarian, more precisely pescatarian so I eat seafood and eggs. Do you think that being vegetarian with hashimoto's is a problem? I get worried about protein sources and if I can get enough.. I do eat organic tofu and tempeh regularly.

+Natasha Ligett I've had no trouble losing weight on a whole foods, plant based (aka vegan) diet. I'm down 30 pounds after 6 weeks. That was before my diagnosis with Hashimoto's last week, and so I lost the weight without any thyroid treatment.
I'm supposed to get nearly 2K calories per day, which I have been, and I've lost weight anyway. It's pretty amazing. If you have Netflix, there is a documentary called "Forks Over Knives" that you might want to check out if you haven't seen it yet.
If you're worried about protein, you might want to try tracking your nutrient intake using the Cronometer website. There are far more nutrients in plants than most of us realize. I don't supplement anything but B12 and get plenty everything I need, including essential amino acids and omega 3. The key is eating enough calories to get all of your nutrients. You'll still lose weight. I can't explain how or why it works, but it really does.

I am so miserable. My TSH and free T4 and T3 Etc are all within normal limits so I'm not on any thyroid medication right now. Three months ago my TPO was almost 4,000. For the past three years I have been trying to lose weight and I can't. I have done intermittent fasting, keto, phentermine, u name it. 3 months ago I switched to a plant-based diet and have only lost four pounds. I have had a day here or there where I might have eaten something sweet but not enough to warrant holding onto 50 extra pounds. I also walk and exercise about three days a week because that's all I can handle because I'm tired after I work out for about a day or two. How do I lose weight. I'm 36 and have three kids to take care of and I'm absolutely miserable. I'm also on Metformin for PCOS/insulin resitance and I still haven't lost weight!!

I have Hashimotos. I started keto 7 weeks ago and went from 181 to 167. I feel very good and I recently started exercising. I do have peripheral neuropathy that started this year. Is that from Hashimotos? I don't have diabetes and my blood sugar is usually in the 80s and never more than 115 after a meal. Anyhow, my real question is I lost a lot of the weight early on and over the last several weeks lost maybe 1/2 -1 lbs. It is frustrating as I am working so hard. I don't snack. I eat twice a day. I fast nearly everyday. Seeing this, I wonder if I should be on Paleo instead? I also get a keto rash on the back of my neck. I don't know what direction to go.

I thought it was my thyroid so I went off. I hear so many stories about people with Hashimoto's losing weight on Keto. I'm at a loss as what to do now. I feel defeated.

From Chris Kesser website: "The molecular structure of gliadin, the protein portion of gluten, closely resembles that of the thyroid gland. When gliadin breaches the protective barrier of the gut, and enters the bloodstream, the immune system tags it for destruction. These antibodies to gliadin also cause the body to attack thyroid tissue. This means if you have autoimmune thyroid disease and you eat foods containing gluten, your immune system will attack your thyroid." From everything I have read you should be 100% gluten free if diagnosed with Hashimotos. My antibodies decreased drastically by going gluten and dairy free :)

I remembered what he hold me and I did research and took it from there... the test he said I needed to get further questions and results I requested my PCP to get done and she did... She asked why I told her and she said I totally understand I got the CORRECT answer I was looking for. Because If I would of ALLOWED her to put me on Thyroid meds I would STILL Be in the SAME SITUATION but Me researching and requesting further testing I got BETTER ANSWERS... and know what route to take......Hashimoto's doesn't have a Dx as what I heard you have to change your eating habbit's alone with other things and get the PROPER testings eliminate Gluten wheat and some other things... some ppl say Gluten doesn't bother them but to each its own....

What would be considered low Calorie diet? My doctor, who just diagnosed me with Hashimoto’s told me that for my height (4’11”) I should be consuming 1300 calories per day. He said for my height a good weight is 120 lbs. which means I need to lose 70 lbs. Does this sound like a good amount of calories?

    • @drwestinchilds
      @drwestinchilds  Před 5 lety +1

Calorie restriction is defined as any number of calories which is less than your basal metabolic rate. So, 1300 calories per day would most likely be a restriction for you. It may help you lose weight in the short-term but there is roughly a 99% chance that you will regain that weight back within 1 year.
