  • Emigration is a very emotional topic. I have studied facts for months and years. Tax law, migration law, real estate markets of different countries were compared. For years I sat on packed suitcases. I wanted to leave and I knew there was a place out there waiting for me, wanting to take me in, devour me and make me a different person. Western Europe is so full of people. Everything is regulated down to the last detail. And it seemed as if this obsession with regulation was only just awakening. The world is so big. There is so much space to express yourself. I've known that for a long time.
I've always read a lot of books. Also about emigrants. Also the old hams from Harold Robbins. Then in the summer before I emigrated, I´ve read John Jake's "Light And Shadow". How difficult emigration used to be back in the 1880ies. In the belly of a narrow ship across the Atlantic. To New Jersey. While cholera raged in the old world. Having to say goodbye forever.
All this is much easier today. That's how I ended up in Bulgaria, where I originally didn't want to go at all. In June 2020, planes flew from Hamburg, Germany to practically only two places. Podgorica and Varna. I chose Varna. My trip here was supposed to be just a short vacation. But then the desire arose to stay forever. The city had already enchanted me an hour after my arrival. When I left the airport building, well over a hundred people were standing around in the shade. I went to the bus stop and wondered. What are people doing there? What are they standing there? Only days later, after telling this story several times, did I put the pieces of the puzzle together. These people were waiting for their loved ones. These people must have come from all corners of Bulgaria's north-east to receive their friends and relatives. I will never forget this picture in my life. After the tough first lockdown, the big reunion. Wow. At that time, everyone was afraid for their relatives! Will you ever meet again? It felt like a story from the multi-part Uruguay emigrant epic. Typhus. Cholera.
When this video was made, I was really euphoric because I am an enthusiastic sailor myself. The city always manages to surprise me. Therefore, I would like to regularly record my impressions on video and publish them here in the future. I would like to show how varied the north-east of Bulgaria is. What wonderful neighborhoods there are. How well organized the country is. How good it is to live here. How hospitable the people are. Varna rightly bears the name sea capital of Bulgaria. People are used to being inundated by tourists, are proud and happy, even if they often don't show it so openly. But I will go into this in more detail another time.

Love this video ! (also the 5 worst things you mentioned, especially having good doctors even if the buildings look awful)

I have always told people that Varna has those special vibes. It is definitely not the perfect city yet but the relaxed atmosphere, being in a small yet big city with many services is kinda cool. I visited it 4 times during the last 2 years. Having a super big park by the sea is definitely a blessing. Was looking at real-estate but the prices rose quite a lot during the last 5 years!
As for you, you can also fly back home cheap in Hamburg with Wizzair.
You might want to go to Asparuhovo and might be lucky to spot dolphins, which somebody did a couple of days ago. Also highly recommend you hop to neighbouring Shumen. It has cool architecture but the most impressive one is the The Monument to 1300 Years of Bulgaria which is an absolute must see. It was featured in one of the BMW ads. Also recommend the picteresque rocky beaches in Tyulenovo. Very cool place. Enjoy your new life in Bulgaria.

@@beam3819 I find Varna a bit more urban and vibrant compared to Montenegro. After all it has a population of more than 300k, which is half of Montenegro. There are also direct flights from Oslo to Varna in summer with Norwegian. As for housing there are many good sites such as mirela dot bg, bulgarianproperties or imot dot bg. It should be very easy to get a flat. I recommend the Greek quarter or the area around the railway station. There are many cool areas around Varna with lots of history. Finally, you can visit much quieter, yet with better instrastructure and town look Burgas, but it has a much more calm atmosphere with nicer beaches. It really depends on your preferences. In Varna you can very easily find a normal flat for 350€ monthly.
