ABOUT US ► DK Pittsburgh Sports is the proud, pioneering, fully independent venture begun in 2014 by award-winning columnist Dejan Kovacevic and featuring a professional staff covering the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates year-round and everywhere they go! This is where it all started! - Sport
If I were Ben Cherrington or Derek Shelton I would have resigned by now. How do they look themselves in the mirror everyday? They are straight up losers. They are doing such a disservice to the game and the fans of Pittsburgh it's ridiculous. I hope the millions of dollars they stuffed in their pockets helps them sleep at night. I guess that's what life is about to them. It sure is hell is not success in my book.
I just read an article about Haines and his tenure in Milwaukee saying virtually the same thing, that none of the hitters got better. I just don't understand their thinking, why did Cherington hire him??? Then again i still don't understand why Nutting hired Cherington. Four out of five losing seasons in Boston as GM and this will be five out of five in Pittsburgh. It is so hard to be a Pirates fan🫤
Why? Because quality costs money! junk does not. Haines probably doesnt hit the payroll hard because he couldnt get a job ANYWHERE else! WHAT A STEAL FOR NUTTING! I feel bad for Pirates fans ( I grew up a Red Sox/Pirates fan; My family moved from Boston to Pennsylvania), so not a die hard like yinz are! But have a soft spot for the Burgh. You guys have a AAA baseball team masquerading as an MLB team, and its sad.
Haines was cheap. And Cherington was cheap.
It should have been a no-brainer. Haines was the ONLY coach fired by Milwaukee right after they got eliminated in the postseason. And the same problems were taking place there
Chumpington has only 1 winning season on his resume and it's not even truly his. That 2013 Red Sox team was still largely put together by his predecessor Theo Epstein. And John Henry, at least back then, was an owner who actually cares and wanted to win. He doesn't have that here and now he's been exposed like the hack he is
The hitting approach from top to bottom is a virus.
I've defended Cherrington for the past couple of years, but if he's too stubborn to admit that his hitting coach continues to produce the worst offenses in team history, then it's time for him to go as well. I know Nutting is not a "baseball guy" but he should be able to recognize complete ineptitude from his hires, Time to clean house again at the top, and not wait until the end of the season to do it.
Me and my buddy just mutually agreed it’s about that time of year when we stop watching this pathetic organization
You can’t tell good hitters to not attack the ball and end up with good results. It also looks like the bullpen isn’t as strong as we all thought heading into the season. Starting pitchers need to stay in the game longer when they are having success. Saving their arms for when you are out of the wildcard race is wasteful thinking.
When someone gets fired for "violating protocol" it's usually for doing something detrimental not for helping or "doing the right thing." This management team should have no leash for improving players and/or the team.
Thanks DK. Great title. Glad your here everyday. I don't know how you do it sometimes and this is one of those times but make no mistake, you are the best ! Great show DK
It's the definition of insanity. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results
Aloha! It's been a rough week. Thanks for hanging in there with us fans 😂.
ahhhhhh, Pirates. That says it all. How we stand/love our bad news bears. No matter how they are doing, winning/losing, I drive 4 hours to sit in that beautiful ball park and cheer them on. My son and I do it once or twice a year. Our first trip this year will be in a couple weekends against the Rockies. Let's Go Bucs
Spot on again, DK. Losers don't prioritize winning. In the Pirates case, management prioritizes the process. But why baby Cruz when he has options and refuses to play anywhere else? They demoted Gonzalez and Peguero quick enough. At 11 and 11, the Pirates are at a cross road. Maybe Milwaukee can point them in the right direction. Your take today was great, DK. Thanks.
When are the fans going to chant FIRE HAINES!!? It worked for Canada.
Fire Nutting! Fire Nutting! Lol
It's the same 5yr rebuild we've been watching under Hurdle and Shelton.
Hurdle had a winning record with the Pirates.
@@mcconlogue1898 Rebuild started under Hurdle and he was fired. He had six losing seasons out of his 9 years in Pittsburgh.
Hurdle won some games though
@@kelseywhitlatch173 Look at the last 3 yrs.
"uuuuuuhhhhhh, Pirates" kinda says it all
After watching yesterdays game, you have to ask how a professional team can not do the basics of baseball. The front office now has to be looked at and I think it starts at the coaching level and our GM needs to address what our eyes are seeing right now. If he is not willing, then the problem could also be at the very top. I love BC, thought he had a great 5 year plan and I was onboard this year like I havnt been in many years, and the last week has taken the wind out of my Pirate sails.
To get swept at home by that Boston team is unexceptable. A bunch of no-names come in and dominate you. I don't wanna hear from management or any players it's early in the season, The same B.S. is happening like last year and the year before that. Stand and watch centercut fastballs right down the middle and you don't swing. Nutting get rid of these bozos you hired to run this team. What young player has come up and produced consistently under this regime. This is YEAR 5 of this crap of not being able to hit, run the bases properly and catch a flyball. I admit I fell for the hype early and I predicted 83 wins this year before the season started. SOMEONE has to go to change the culture of this team. We diehard Pirate fans deserve better!!!
Nobody deserves anything. We all get what we go out and make happen.
J1Q: Which of the following will happen next in Pirates history? 20 game winner in a season, 40 homer season, 300 homeruns as a Pirate, or 100 wins as a Pirate?
Cherington's hitting philosophy is almost a perfect mirror to the pitching philosophy under the Huntington regime. "Let's have our power pitchers pitch to contact!"
Totally out of place and bass-ackwards. Too smart by a half. Self-sabotaging. Keep on pounding square pegs into round holes, Bucs.
Pgh media builds the hype on these teams and falls flat on their faces like a pro wrestling gimmick from the 70s.
DK...there are times we need you .. like a Dad to kick ya in your butt for not doing your chores...and you delivered today... I knew you would..I just know Pittsburgh is such a better town when the Pirates are playing good ball.. and the lack of development of top level picks/talent kills me every year.. I'm just not mad..I'm disappointed (in my Dad voice)..~Zack
The problem with losing for so long, you stop being able to tell good losses from bad losses. The loss becomes the basis of expectation, which leads to self-fulfillment. ❤🔥🍻
Since when are losses ever good???
@@41Brother2 When they contain teaching moments which lead to actual improvement 🍻
@@dennygc5874 And those are worth celebrating? Is that what sports in this town have turned to? A loss is a loss. There's no joy in that
@@41Brother2 I didn't say anything about joy. I think they went into this series expecting to lose, so they did...badly. 🍻
@@dennygc5874🍻♠️
I was out after the 59 pitch debacle it literally almost seemed like the Mets were scripted to win the game and we weren’t meant to win no matter what lol.
Cherington and Shelton have perfected something... making excuses for their ridiculous decision making. I believe that is where they spend their time along with computer model dreams. I'm wore out on listening to John Wehner tow the line and affirm whatever it is they are doing. He won't say anything otherwise as he likes his paycheck and being involved. He's hard to listen to, why is he getting so much time now on broadcasts? hmmm
The Pirates are making up new ways to lose this year. Already down to 4th place after this recent skid. If they don't split this series with the Brewers, the season could be in real jeopardy, I think it already is.
According to Tellez, Reynolds, and all the "management" there is nothing to worry about though since "they have time to make adjustments" and "it is still early". That isn't the conversation that comes out of the mouth of any competitive player or team.
I've been saying for a while now that Cruz needs real intervention (sports counseling/therapy-not sure what is going on there), the look on his face when he's on the field says it all. Half the time he either looks confused or like he doesn't want to be there. Another atrocious day batting yesterday and another error in the field. He is not a shortstop. He's clumsy and injury prone making any athletic moves that are other than straight ahead. I think trying to convert him to a position to catch fly balls is more appropriate if they are going to keep him around, like the outfield some have suggested (he can use that long reach and height out there and cover a lot of ground quick). He has the arm for it too. I've heard he doesn't want to play anywhere but shortstop.. well you don't get to choose when you can't play the position. That ship has sailed though.
The platoon, "tryouts" during the regular season strategy is back, and it looks like that is where this is going again. Grandal will be up soon, Davis sent down. Bae will be up, someone else down, Gonzales, Peguero same thing, Williams maybe down then (though it should be Cruz). Then that won't work and the experiments will continue. Meanwhile they can save up all the arm strength of the starting pitchers for their playoff run?! Can't make this stuff up. Wow wee. Please, please do something and prove me wrong.
I'm honestly sick of Cruz. Can't stand his attitude and how he doesn't wanna play anywhere else. He's not a shortstop and should check his ego at the door and actually try a different position if it'll help the team. I like the OF idea. His height, speed and arm strength fit better as an outfielder than at short and maybe that's something that's better learned at the minors for a while. If he doesn't like it, tough. There's the door 👉 🚪
@@41Brother2 well said, I'm with you
Calling out BS. Get um DK.
DK, The Pirates are so into analytics how do they not see the one stat that's been around forever that tells them that if you are behind in the count your chances of getting a hit is less? They're so intent on wearing down the starting pitcher by taking pitches that they totally ignore that stat, I don't get it!
I feel what’s happened here is irreparable. All these players’careers are hurt. A psychiatrist will be needed to get their heads back
Lamb needs to be called up. Release Tellez. Peggy and Gonzalez are off to very good starts. So, can we assume that the Indy hitting coach is better than Haines, seeing as these two are hitting over .300 at AAA? Ofcourse we can.
Why does it feel like the pirates are the only team that can have a whole team hitting drought and tbh the starting pitching hasn’t helped the situation either
Shelton must go right now. You can’t put Chapman and Bednar in that game yesterday. “Get them some work” is nonsense. They could just throw a bullpen session. If I hear on Tuesday that they can’t go because they pitched two days in a row I will lose it. He lost two games in one day. Also Shelton continues to put out lineups with no consistency. You wonder why the hitting is down. He keeps “giving everyone a chance.” Using all 26 isn’t a blessing, it is a curse. The best teams use the same lineup and really only use 6 guys out of the bullpen. Shelton has always been a looser, why keep giving him chances?
I liked Cherington the first couple of years, I thought he made some good trades, seemed to build up the farm system pretty well, and he has had success in Boston so I had some faith. After all of the work that he put in he should be angry about how poorly it's all panned out. He should know that it's not normal for so many players to forget how to hit in the majors. If he's not angry enough to actually do something about it soon maybe it's time for him to go too.
His "success" in Boston wasnt even his. 1 winning season in the 4 years he served as GM. That 2013 team was largely Theo Epstein's team, he just was lucky enough to be there for the ride. The 3 other seasons? Losing record and last in the divison. That's his legacy
FIRE HAINES.......FIRE HAINES......FIRE HAINES....FIRE HAINES....WHY IS CRUZ STILL IN THE LINEUP HE IS A AUTO STRIKEOUT
SuperBall♥️
Same old Bucs. If your concerned about innings pitched...go get Trevor Bauer
#fireandyhaines
The fact that the Pirates starting pitching stinks, and you’ve got Trevor Bauer throwing fire in Mexico when he can be signed for $1m, tells you this club doesn’t care about winning.
Nothing surprising here. Same ol Pirates. They just speeding up the process
Wow! Just at the beginning of THIS month, I was taking a beating here for telling everyone to " whoa up" on their ridiculous expectations!
Well, it seems like the woe came even earlier than I predicted 😂....and the skittles and rainbows crowd is silent!
The surest bet in sports is the Pirates finishing below .500
The it's like trading on the stock market. You try to guess what the high water mark will be, where you get your best value. Last year it was a 20-9 record. This year looks like the peak was 9-2.
Embarrassing is an understatement.😑
Shelton I believe was a hitting coach prior to getting hired. Yet this team has generally not been able to hit. Go figure. BC is like a clone of Huntington.
Nothing will be fixed. The management and coaching for all of the Pittsburgh organizations (Steelers, Penguins, Pirates) are all the same. They will NOT change; regardless, of undesired results. I have been a Pittsburgh fan for all of my life and I am tired of watching them all.
they stink. Being this bad after such a great start is par for the course. White Sox are supposedly the worst team in baseball, but the Pirates aren't far behind at this rate
Fire Haines, hire Nunnally, stop the stupid.
They're sucking already and it's not even All Star break yet like usual.
These are the Pirates we all know and love. Let's not pretend Pittsburgh will ever be a relevant baseball city again. Embrace our identity as a doormat and laughing stalk!
Ignorant arrogance sums up the Pittsburgh sports scene.
