When Trossard is on the pitch as their false 9, we actually kind of already see Martinelli take over more of the striker role while Trossard tends to drift wide on the left side and switch places with Martinelli on the attack.

But isn't that what a false 9 is?
Dropping deep into space or drifting about - going wide or entering midfield - as opposed to a "traditional" striker like Haaland, Toney & Osimhen (although these 3 don't always play like that).
Also, the video title said "striker", as opposed to false 9 (just started watching it. Lol) & it seems to me that Martinelli has always had the predatory instincts of a striker

  • @billyferaldy
    @billyferaldy Před 6 měsíci +40

The idea of Martinelli being a striker has been a theme for many Arsenal fans. But in my opinion he is too good right now at LW to move position, his strength is his movements, take ons, and pace. Its all you can ask for a winger, and i think Martinelli prefers LW as well, but maybe a slight tweak by giving him more freedom, with a left midfielder/fullback hugging the touchline can work wonders for him

I think we have the personnel already for a great front five, they just need to interchange more obviously in games, especially the 8/10s.
    Martinelli-Jesus-Saka
    Havertz-Odegaard
The base so everybody knows where to be if we switch back to default, wide wingers to stretch a tight defense
    Changing with:
    Jesus-Martinelli-Saka
    Odegaard-Havertz
If we need more running power in behind and we need to free Odegaard to find it (he's been too rigid recently, perhaps a freer role like in 2021/22 could work).
    Changing with:
    Martinelli-Havertz-Saka
    Jesus-Odegaard
If we need a long ball option up top to escape the press or score some crosses against a low block and technical players behind the mop op in tight spaces.

I'm an Arsenal fan too btw! In the beginning of your video re Xg vs actual you said only Kane was close to Nelli' in terms of outperforming Xg - why when you have Haalands stats right there on the screen LOL
Xg 28 Ag 36 pretty significant amount of goals beyond the expected from a more significant starting point. Kane was obviously better percentage wise (30 from 21) -> it is surely harder to outscore predicted goals if the amount is already higher than most strikers bag in a league season.
Outperforming 9.3 is infinitely easier and saying 50% to represent 6 more goals (you may as well round up or down as there aren't fractions of goals in the game) whilst impressive in its own right can't be used to compare with top strikers.
Perhaps you could've shown us the wingers xG to make the case he could make the transition based on how much more effective he is in his position as a goalscorer.
    Just a thought 💡😎

Brasil played 442, with Martinelli on the left, Raphinha on the right, Vini jr and Rodrygo the same as they play in Real Madrid, closer to the gol, alternating positions, as the 2 strikers. But, I can asure you, martinelli did not came close to a false 9 that game, specialy when Vini jr, already in the first half got injured, and got sub. After that, Martinelli continued in the LW, now Rodrygo became 10 and Diniz put Joao Pedro from Brighton as a full 9.

People should stop this nonsense, because of he can score lots of goals from a wide position doesn't mean he'll work as a striker, he's positional sense is amazing and hes a very good finisher but i don't see him being strong enough to hold up the ball or tuggle with defenders, we don't need another Walcott situation, i think he has the potential to be an elite goal scoring winger

All of us hailed Aubameyang as the best striker since Henry. Aubameyang was never the guy to hold up defenders. The attributes all 3 strikers have in common are blistering pace, perfect timing of runs, and perfect finishing. Ok Martinelli could improve on his timing of runs, but the other attributes are there already.

I beg to differ, Martinelli is way too different from Walcott. He is stronger, better ball possession, more skilled & just as fast. Martinelli would do better for us as a striker than Jesus & Nketiah are doing... I see glimpses of VanPersie & Alexis in Martinelli if he stabilises as a striker.....more than 20 goals per season kinda striker.

A 'target man' no.9 shouldn't be seen as a black and white decision - i.e. we'd always play with that person up front in a particular formation. However, we absolutely need that specialist option in the armoury and there are options out there.

  • @bendik8161
    @bendik8161 Před 6 měsíci +2

At this level, and especially with how Arsenal play, we need a proper striker who has played there since he started kicking a ball and is constantly smelling those crosses and passes at the right moment as that's what great strikers that decide games do. We are already seeing signs of struggling to break teams down and that's when you need to be able to smash a cross in and have a striker who can predict when and where that happens. We can't gamble on Martinelli having a good game where he links up, makes one-two plays and scores every game as half the time the team won't click and we won't score goals.
A proper center forward is what Arsenal need, Martinelli is great but absolutely not the solution in my eyes.

I think there amount of detail that goes into preparation by the opposition to nullify your threat means that you have to have a dozen ways of playing that keeps the opponent guessing. It will rarely be about one player playing this or that position. It will be about the movement of the team as one organism and here MA still has a lot to do to get us to the level of synergy that mancity have. That said, you still need the tip of the spear and for that we have martinelli and saka

At the beginning of last season i saw them interchangeing so many times woth ease and we'd sometimes see Jesus down the wing and Martinelli doen teh middle and i think that was part of Arteta's plan too. But then all these injuries started happening and i havent seen it as much since.

What I think you are highlighting is that Arsenal have options. Gabi, Jesus and Saka are awesome but there is another player in the mix and that is Trossard. He allows Gabi to come more central whilst also providing more options. Similarly he provides options out on the wing when Jesus has blessed the centre. I know it isn't fashionable to say it but Eddie adds another dimension which arsenal can use to break down teams. His profile is different again. All that provides Michel with a lot of options and all of them are quite scary if you don't play forArsenal. Arsenal are City's serious challenge this year and I am looking forward to January when the next phase of recruits makes us even better.

Sorry, the XG comparison doesn't really stack up for me. This needs to be looked at in a much more granular level. A true striker will be scoring chances that they would be expected to put away on a very regular basis. But missing those chances and scoring the odd 'worldy' could skew the figures. Martinelli is developing really well, but with our current tactical set up would he really work as a 9. I would compare him in style more to Henry, who certainly wasn't a traditional number 9 type player. In which case he is probably in his best position, starting wide and cutting in, he is a incredible weapon out wide but out style means we need a more typical 9 or a Jesus style blend of 9/10.

If we get a fast silky winger like Martinelli in the next transfer window, I’m all for trying Martinelli as a 9. However, moving him there right now might stunt his growth as a winger.

Why would we play Martinelli at striker when he is so good at LW?

PLease can youtalk about Osimhen joining Arsenal. You actually touched on something I have been thinking about and I felt we are not yet. We need someone like Osimhen.

Arsenal's problem is not a 9,but a 10. We somehow lack that creative player who could possibly create something out of nothing

Been saying this for the last three seasons now . He should be played through the middle . Also needs to stop taking corners and get him in the box getting on the end of those corners

He has played this position for Arsenal before so it's not like we've never seen it before. Some of us have been calling for this for a while now
