New BMW 840 could be the best looking coupe in the World: BMW 840i Review & Road test

  • The new BMW 840d xDrive is rather unique, because if you start looking for a decent diesel coupé rival in its £76,000 price category, there just aren’t any! There are a couple of obvious four door alternatives in the price ballpark, such as the Porsche Panamera & the powerful Audi A7 TDI Sportback, but there are no two door rivals, especially not with this car’s neat mix of luxury and sportiness.So my next question is diesel or petrol, as the new two-car line-up offers a 523bhp twin-turbo V8 M850i with its supercar acceleration and a £24,000 higher starting price or the calmer 3.0-litre, 316bhp 840d which can still tear up a 4.9sec 0-62mph time and both have a 155mph governed top speed.
    I wager few will be able to tell the difference easily between the two 8 Series models either, as at a glance both UK models get M-level front spoilers, side skirts and rear spoilers, and the diesel has identical-looking exhausts as well as 20in Y-spoke wheels just like its petrol partner. Only difference is that the diesel comes with run-flat tyres as standard, although you don’t have to take those if you don’t want to. Inside it’s very recognisably a BMW layout, with plenty of smart piano black. The fascia has a new, iDrive 7.0 system and there are screens ahead of the driver to carry the major instruments as well as the massive affair above the centre console. There’s a head-up display, too!
    The 840d comes as standard with most of the extensive driver aids and traction-keeping devices offered by its pricier stable mate, starting with the xDrive smart 4WD system and the integral active steering, which quickens and lightens steering in slow, tight corners. It all makes a satisfyingly impressive package for the long-distance driver, thanks to superb seats set low in the car and a comfort driving mode you’ll be inclined to use most, rather than Sport or Eco-pro. Sport keeps the revving at its peak and gives you instant access to gearbox’s kick down, with good strong acceleration.
    On the road it is very old-school, with a highly comfortable ride provided courtesy of the coil springs making the car feel extremely complete and capable. If you’re in for a big GT, with decent looks and a sensible sized boot you’ll find this car irresistible, especially when you add a 35mpg diesel engine that’ll let you cruise 600 miles on a tank.
    On the downside, the 840d does take up as much road as a big four door saloon, so it’ll never feel truly agile, however, there’s the relaxed ride, the luxury feel and the cabin space to compensate. Best of all, it looks stunning!

    Not sure why you were getting such lousy mpg. I’m averaging 35 in city and 42-45 on the motorway.
    Also agree with you on the seat belt indentations....unbelievable!! If you’ve got the dents in the leather, you can remove them with CAREFUL use of a heat gun. I use a small piece of cardboard to stop it marking when the seats are down but, a massive design screw up by BMW.
    Really great car, and the automated driving systems are incredible.

    A very fair review although on motorway cruising you can get over 40mpg. Really only a 2 seater as you say. 850i petrol has an exhaust crackle and pop in Sport mode, which possibly makes it worth the 20 grand extra if that's your thing ;-) Personally I would prefer the M5 Competition.

    You've got the title incredibly wrong mate, what you've got there is the 840d, the M8 isn't even on sale yet. And there is no such thing as the 'M840d'. Great review otherwise!

    • @UKMike2009
      @UKMike2009 Před 5 lety

      Correct - but BMW UK refer to the current petrol version as the "M850i" although it is only M Sport trim. M8 to come this year and the 8 Series Gran Coupe.
