  • Many of us have used dowels to hold the edges of boards together, but when you want to locate dowels in the center of a board's face, measuring can get tricky. Meet the simple dowel center!

    Neat and so simple! I'd not heard of dowel centres until today and until I saw this video assumed I'd fit the dowel into the first piece and stick the dowel centres on the other end of the dowel, rather than putting them in the dowel hole! This should make aligning my end on end shelf extension a piece of cake (famous last words)!

    I just did 16 dowels using the dowel centers and the joints were perfect! Much better than prior ones I've done using a dowel jig. This is now my standard method for doing dowels and I'll be much less hesitant to using dowel joinery in the future!

    In one of Matthias Wandel's many videos he showed how to get the most out of a self-centering doweling jig. He used the doweling jig to drill holes on the sides and ends of narrow stock and on wider board surfaces. He used a small piece of wood, approximately 0.75"W x 8"L x 0.5"D, placed it between the jaws of the doweling jig to keep the jig upright, clamped the stabilized jig to the stock, and drilled the holes. There's no guessing with his approach. Put centering lines on the small piece of wood, align the jig to your marks, and drill vertical holes with the doweling jig.

    Dowel centers are also great for when you are working on a jig and need to make sure a drilled through-hole in one board aligns with a T-nut on a mating board. The dowel center in the hole tells you where the center for the T-nut needs to be or any other hole you need to align.

    A lil after 1:25 the vertical board slightly shifts. Make sure you have a 90 degree guide board along the side of both boards. That lil shift means a lot!

    In my experience, these are really hard to get accurate. Dowels have little to no play, so unless you get it absolutely bang on, things won't go togeather. The pins also only mark the position of the dowel, they don't help with drilling at the right angle. So you still need something to help there, like a drill press or something. All in all, I find dowels frustrating.

    • @JusBidniss
      @JusBidniss Před 5 lety +2

      Same here, always have had issues with dowel angles. I once had (but lost) a drill attachment, with a T-bar that attached behind the chuck, with holes at the ends of the T, that slipped over 2 posts attached to a base, essentially turning a hand drill into a mini drill press. Barring that, I suppose a guide block with brass-lined holes is good. Very hard to just 'wing it' and have success.

    • @SirBenJamin_
      @SirBenJamin_ Před 3 lety +4

      @@OldDunollieman Depends on the accuracy you're looking for. Most people cannot repeatedly drill perfectly accuracte vertical holes .. which is kind of why drill presses exist ...Not saying you can't get really good at it with practise. But at the end of the day, this is a hobby for me. And I don't do it often enough.

    I'm sure I'm being overly concerned about this, but I wish there were a way to retract the spikes until I had the pieces actually butted up flush to the right spot before they marked the centers. Can't think of a way to do that offhand (short of a ridiculous bluetooth- or wifi-controlled motorized thing 😂), but it's stressing me out that I have to roll the piece into place and hope I've got my alignment correct.

    Always more then one way to skin a goose. This one works and its been around for a wile, you can make homemade jigs also or buy expensive jigs. I kind of like loose tenons but dowls are also a good joint.
    You can spend 1000 bucks on a machine
    Or make a jig for your router. The key is making something accurate that works flawless every time you use it.

    • @popularwoodworking
      @popularwoodworking  Před 5 lety +3

      The holes drilled without the jig? Some of it is drill technique/experience (another topic and one I'll do!) Beyond that, perfection isn't necessarily good, unless it is totally perfect. Dowels are imperfect in diameter, and we add glue into the dowel pockets, taking up space. The little bit of slop created allows space to correct for all the other variables, but when the job is done, a solid joint is achieved. Just don't get TOO sloppy! ;0)

      There are different types of drill guides available. I bought mine from Big Gator Tools (Amazon) BGT V-drill 2 Pack V-drill guides W/25 SAE (Standard) Hole Sizes 1/8 - 1/2. They will hold your bit in a vertical position while you're drilling. Plus the bottom of the guides have a "V" shape that allows you to drill straight holes on curved surfaces such as a dowel or?
