Seaweed Harvesters Risk Their Lives in the Philippines (Gamet)

- Gamet is a rare species of seaweed that is found in the northernmost coast of the Philippines, particularly in Ilocos Norte and Cagayan. It is considered as ‘black gold’ and is a highly coveted ingredient due to its rarity and the dangers surrounding its harvesting process. During our shoot, the unpredictable climate made it more difficult to obtain Gamet in its purest form. It was close to impossible, as its availability heavily relies on the weather during the Northeast Monsoon or “Amihan.” Join us as we traverse the dangerous path of Gamet harvesters in Ilocos Norte.
Note: Kindly note that “Amihan” should have referred to the Northeast Monsoon. We just received feedback and we’re so grateful and we apologize for the error. Thank you!

I didn't know that that seaweed is edible. I hope the government helps local people to educate, study and cultivate them. Like d2 south korea small country but never stops to recreate and develop. Philippines has lot's of potential to export products from fruits to rice. Kulang talaga ng support galing sa government umpisa sa edukasyon. Salamat sa FEATER for making this video. Ang galing po ng production nyo. Keep it up.
The problem is that this type of seeweed can only grow on those conditions, and cultivating it like other types of seaweeds isn't possible. Anyway Burgos is known for this type of seaweed and believe it or not, the local government had already done its job in educating all gamet gatherers and all tourists wanting to taste this seaweed. As a matter of fact we even have Gamet festival in Burgos commemorating this black gold and was featured before in lots of articles even abroad.
We ate different kinds of seaweeds here in Ilocos Norte
Tama
@@robertanthonybermudez5545 noob spotted, lika sa ilocos hahaha mas okay mamuhay dto kesa sa probinsya niyo for sure
Like even lambanog in quezon is somehow celebrated in south korea and japan. Its potential for importation is much bigger than having help with government to expand and promote the product
FEATR needs to be a mainstay youtube channel for all FILIPINO diaspora. Just watching FEATR is enough to make the Filipino Diaspora feel connected to their Filipino Heritage. Thank you for this, my Lola always talks about her life in Ilocos before she was wisked away by my grandfather, this might be something I can buy for her to remember her youth in Ilocos.
Love how Erwan just goes to a house instead of a restaurant. This series is literally a good documentary!
Yes, that's what I've noticed also. And hindi siya maarte sa mga bahay na kinakainan niya.
This reminds of the "percebe" or gooseneck barnacles from Spain, one of the most expensive seafood in the world. They both are prized ingredients and people are risking lives to harvest it from the heavy crashing waves! Amazing to think that we also have our own version here. Thank you so much for this FEATR! ♥
FEATR is something. Erwan and his team is something. These are the type videos that people should be watching and supporting.
Kodus to team FEATR. Such a wonderful documentary for the harvesters. Been waiting for another episode of 81 provinces❤😊
Thanks for watching!
Bravo Erwan! Walang kaarte-arte kahit linuto lang sa kusina ng simpleng bahay, dami nia kinain at genuine reactions pa.
I didn’t realize how difficult it is to harvest this seaweed. Thank you so much for highlighting the lives of our fishermen in our province.
Im from the tip of Cagayan Valley, an hour away from Pagudpud and gamet has been one the must have pasalubong when we go to Ilocos Region but i didnt know the risk of getting it. Respect to all gamet harvesters! Thank you FEATR for this docu.
We need more of these kinds of videos to be put out there and reach a bigger audience. The way the story was told just hit hard. It does not only educate you but also makes you appreciate food or life in general.
FEATR again delivers! Tatay Armand and Kuya Ruben, hats off to you, Sirs!
As someone who grew up in Ilocos Norte, we love eating this when I was younger. But it’s seasonal, not always available and expensive. That’s why when Nori weeds became popular, and that time I was studying in Manila, I always buy them because it reminds me of gamet.
The production quality of this one is top notch. Something you would see from foreign news companies. I kinda imagined this being a Kara David-narrated topic winning awards abroad.
I’ve been following and watching Featr episodes specially when they travel in the provinces! This episode is very close to my heart, my late grandfather is from Burgos, Ilocos Norte. He used to gather and sell gamet. We have relatives still doing the same. Thank you Featr for this. All the best to your channel!
This is another episode for the books. This really FEATR the philippines. Some of the untold stories of the country. More of these please.
This is your best feature so far
This is surreal,
Incredibly well presented and our high regard to Erwan bracing the strong current of the sea water behind the gamet harvesting against all odds.
Thank you for sharing this very valuable information on seaweeds and the danger behind.
Salamat Erwan

Thanks for the support! Don’t forget to subscribe to get more of our Ilocos content.
I can imagine gamet must be so delicious but it's the stories of the people who gather them that makes it all the more priceless. Thank you for telling their stories.
Much respect to the folks who risk their lives for this delicacy! Thanks for another great video!
High respect to Erwan and the entire FEATR team for always bringing us quality and informative content.
This is the kind of video worth watching and sharing.
Last time Ive eaten gamet was when my Lola was still alive. She mixed it with tomato. It tastes so good. Thank you for featuring Pagudpud ♥️♥️♥️
Very cinematic 😍 I love watching this type of documentary
Glad you enjoyed it!
I salute Erwan for featuring those people na yan ang kinabubuhay nila, and Erwan is always on the go, he's eating everything he features, bless you and your show 🙏
New subscriber ilocana here. Hats off to FEATR. 💯🙌
Gamet is really expensive even when i was young 64yrs old na ako ngaun I remember when our relative coming from US always want to eat gamet during their vacation or they will ask their relatives to send them gamet because it so delicious so yummy Thanks Erwan for featuring our gamet in ur ilocos trip More to ur channel
Idi ubing ak araramiden ni nanang ko ket ikabil na ti napudot nga danum ata gamet tapnu lumukneng ta mabalin kanen uray isisu na, mabalin met ikkam ti asin wen nu toyo ta adda raman na nga sabali.

Maraming salamat FEATR, for featuring Ilocos' black gold.
Kudos Featr, for bringing "THE BEST" of Philippines finest hidden local gems. 👍👏
This is an amazing series!! Keep up the good work. Look forward to more good quality docus from you!
Thank you Featr for highlighting Ilocos Norte Harvester. To let us understand and appreciate their work and lives. To understand the value of each seaweeds✨.
Thank you for featuring this for our local fishermans. FEATR never disappoints. May God bless you and your whole staff/crew! Please keep doing this! Hope my children would see these videos, once they able to start binging here on youtube!
Just for the dangers of getting Gamet, it should probably cost more to sell, so it can really help these fishermen who are risking their lives for it.
Ang hirap pa lng kunin ang gamet. Kya pala mahal. Hinahalo din sa soup pag dry na. Pero nakakatuwa c Erwan ang galing makibagay.
Really, a great storyteller. More videos, Erwan! ❤
Amazing quality content. This kinds of content should be the popular channels not the other youtubers who make useless and nonsense contents.
From Ilocos Norte and so glad to see vlogs like this☝🏽 God bless sir Erwan!
This made me cry. Thank you, FEATR for this! 🥺🙏🏼
Thank you for this wonderful piece.Growing up, itinerant vendors would come by the house to sell gamet in flat swatches much like nori. You’re right that the Ilocano dish vegetable dish with gamet reminds me of a Japanese soup that I had when I visited the country. I really appreciate your deep-dive into Filipino heritage cuisine. Salamat and Mabuhay! Well done 👏👏👏
What a beautiful video, it's like teleporting back in Ilocos Norte with a glimpse of an eye! 🤗👌💕 Thanks FEATR!
I love watching your documentaries. Hope you continue to feature the unique culture of the Philippines.
Proud to be Pinoy 😊
As always, production quality is top notch. But I also just wanna say the sound design here is SO DAMN CRISP.

I always look forward to the FEATR documentaries. You have an amazing researcher and the entire team really deserves to be lauded. Your content never disappoints and how I wish this is the kind of content people aim to ‘copy’. Thanks for giving us a reason appreciate our culture and people.
Great channel. Visited Ilocos once beautiful place.

How I wish I can subscribe more than once to this channel. The amount of time and effort + quality they put into each video just amazes me. God bless you Erwan and team.

Sounds yummy! Have you watched our dinengdeng cooking video yet?
Ang sarap panoorin dumadayo ka sa probinsya...
10:50 That soup man, that's amazing. I've had it several times. It is indeed expensive and is definitely not something you can have on a regular basis.
This deserves more views and recognition compared to other bloggers
I absolutely love this content. It is always fun to see the cooking but the way you put together these videos to showcase and educate is absolutely incredible.
Signed,
A first gen FilAm just trying to connect with the culture
you the goat for documenting these! 💪🏼
these are the types of content, i've enjoyed from this chanel - docu based.
Thank you for showcasing the hometown I'venever been to Kuya Erwan! My family roots came from Ilocos Norte but since I was born and raised here in the southern part, I've never had the chance to learn about the cuisine and culture of my family's hometown, kudos to you and the production team! ^_^
this is amazing, FEATR!!!!
How is this video only 160k+ views? This deserves 10million views.
i'm introduced to new things ever time! thanks featr 💚
This is just one of the many reasons why I love watching Featr... Even before it was still Erwan’s.. oh how I am being educated in every video that you feature... Kudos and more of this please!!!!💚💚💚
Though it's not like I watch your videos by the time they get uploaded, but I make sure I watch them when I find time...like a binge-watching of ur documentaries and have my cheek freeze for smiling ☺️ so imagine if that’s like 4 videos and I'm smiling like almost an hour hahahahaha
Hats off Erwan and Team. Great!
very nice docu. Finally someone highlighting very important industries that Philippines have to preserve. I never thought it was that expensive when I got to taste it for free in high school from a friend 😅…

Finally highlighting the North!
Awesomeness again 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽🫶🫶🫶🫶🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭❤️❤️❤️🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺
This was always a staple, especially when we had relatives coming from Ilocos Norte to bring in these fresh seaweeds. And yes, this is exactly how we eat our gamet; with fresh tomatoes, onions and sukang iloko or calamansi juice. Other seaweed salads we Ilocanos eat are pukpuklo and ararosep. The last time I ate this was when I last visited the Philippines... at a picnic in Saud Beach in Pagudpud.. I miss Ilocano food so much 'coz we always eat our seaweeds and veggies fresh.
The sound effect and all the editing is just all perfect! You inspire me to make a video too Featr ☺️
looking forward for another short documentary like this one. based on true story
Solid manong Erwan!

Thank you erwan for visiting our place🥰
The way he risks his own camera to video the risky job of people who work hard to earn a living is truly a passion. Salute to all the people behind of those things that we eat everyday.
Nice 👏🏻
Ganda ng story telling at editing mala Yes Theory! ❤️
Ganda!
Im from the Babuyan Islands(Fuga Island) i remember when i was young we use to harvest gamet and i love it on top of my sinigang hot soup or salad together with cherry tomato and sibuyas tagalog when its fresh and torta when its dried.
OMG that sounds good
I really love the videos from this channel. I am just distracted with some of the incorrect translations. I don't know if it's just me, but as someone who speaks Iloko I am correcting the translations in my mind. LOL. Nevertheless, videos/contents from this channel are really impressive. Raw, real, and respectful of the people and culture of the places visited. Bravo!
