2 Zildjian heavy weights. Both are great. As feel heavier but sound darker compared to the Ks. Sorry for the phone camera. I'm a drummer, not a sound engineer.
you did a better job of demoing both hats than the over-miced big shop retailers do. Mainly also because instead of trying to show off chops, you hit simple but consistent strokes that someone can actually listen to and compare. Good job-thx
Pitch and timber are separate qualities that are easily confused, as in these comments. Many people are saying the K’s are brighter, but they’re not, they just have a higher pitch. Listen to the timbre when he splashes it with his foot. The k has a more mellow tone where as the A has sparkly high tones coming out. Yes the k are higher in pitch, but they are clearly darker.
Two of the best in the biz and worth owning both. I like the warm, mellow brightness of the A’s and the dark, rich crispness of the K’s. Both sweet and buttery with the perfect amount of attack 💯
wooo, first one in! great video man, short & sweet, and to the point. i think that's how all gear vids ought to be. must be nice owning all these hats. especially these two.
I have also changed tastes, myself. Started playing on A's, moved on to K's for years, and now I'm finding that the A's are what my ears want to hear these days. Funny how that happens.
I have both and switch back and forth. Lately I’ve been very into the A’s. The are crisper and when you play stuff where the hats are more closed is where the A’s really sound better than K’s. Both are really good though. If I had to pick just 1 it would be tough but I might have to pick the A’s. Unlike this video they are brighter and crisper. But be warned they are much louder when riding them in an open position than K’s so you may need some cotton in your left ear when playing them, lol
Both sound great & compliment each other well. I use a pair of 1977 A 14" New Beats, & a pair of 1990 K/Z special 13" high hats in a double high hat set up. They complement each other well.
A's actually do have a low pitches, on the whole. The overtones are what cause the 'brightness' that are associated with the A and A Custom cymbals (though, the A Customs do have higher pitches than the A line). With that being said, there are K Customs that are higher in pitch when compared to the A series (the K Custom 20 inch ride is a good example of that. This ride sounds more like something we would expect from an A.) I have found that both of the 'Custom' lines are really my least favorite overall. The A Zildjians have everything one could need, in my opinion. The 20 inch Crash Ride, to me, is the perfect 50's jazz sound ride. I actually feel that all of these new super dark, super dry cymbals are getting TOO dark and dry. For me, the A's sit perfectly within any musical context. Cheers!
cpu554 Agreed. I recently found out the thickness of cymbals effects the “darkness” or “brightness”. Thick cymbals tend to sound higher in pitch/brighter so I think maybe the K’s are thicker.
Nuclear Hotdogs which of the sets sounds darker to you in this particular video? If you agree that the A’s do what factor is making this possible? Like what is a more in depth opinion you have on these two sets of hi hats?
Perfect comparison. I have K hats, but I think I wish to switch. New Beats sound better of the two for me, and from another video New Beats also sound better to me than A Customs. Thank you.
James Bryce Check out the 14" Z Custom Dyno Beats, 15" Z3 Mastersounds, and 14" K/Z Specials. I own a pair of 14" New Beats from 2001 and get compliments on them, but they sound a bit spongy and wishy-washy.
Great comparison, thanks much!. I've got some 2010 New Beats and some 1991 NB's as well (still shiny and bright looking). I also have a new set of K's...(ALL 14"). Both A's are bright, med-heavy and crisp when closed or slightly open...then a bit clangy and heavy when opened a centemer or more. The 91 model is crisper, heavier, more aggressive and somehow more musical and playable (than the 2010 NB's) when opened. On heavy stuff, they sound KILLER when opened. They were a great $100 (used of course) score. I prefer them over the 2010 NB's. I'm struggling to like the K's. In louder situations, the A's cut considerably more. The K's are quieter and a little low in pitch for me. They're a little trashy-er, less focused and kind of...I dunno..."muddy" I guess... They are very crisp however. They're slightly dark and warmer too. I might like them in a lower volume setting. I'll keep giving them a try I guess before I sell em.
EastBay MauiBoy - Live both of these cymbals. To be honest, I don’t play either much. Been using 14 K and A Mastersound hats. With the K Mastersound you get the cut of the As with the dark buttery tone of the K. Best of both worlds.
@@RazeTheWeak Well that raises a question for me... I have an opportunity to get a 14" A Mastersound bottom (2005) in great condition (9 of 10) for $90. I'm thinking about getting it so I can mix and match it with my New Beats and my K's... What do you think?, in your opinion, should I jump?
EastBay MauiBoy I have personally contacted zildjian and asked if there was a difference between the top K and/or A new beat cymbal and the top A and/or K Mastersound top cymbal. They informed me that they were identical, and that only the bottom cymbal was different with the New Beats and K hats. So if you get this bottom cymbal, you will basically have a pair of A Mastersounds. And like you said, you can put the A Mastersound bottom under the K top and create what, in my opinion, is one of the best sounding set of hats that there is. Hope that helps.
@@RazeTheWeak It TOTALLY helped...Thanks!. You actually answered two (or 3) of the things I was wondering about, like the top hats being different or not on the New Beats vs the A Mastersound, or if they were more or less the same. Well that's cool, now I'm really considering it, just to have more voicing on my kit. I like lots of sizzzle, and I hear the A Mastersounds give you plenty. Considering a brand new set of A MS's is $360, buying that bottom (I told you about) for $90 might be a no-brainer
@@eastbaymauiboy i have the older A Mastersound hats and i sometimes use an old AA Regular bottom hat with the Mastersound top. Sounds completely different . Like New Beats . Also just bought some AAX X Celerator hats . I do the same with those and have a different sound again. I love it !
Lorenzo Maximo - They ARE a little more crisp. Ks have a certain sizzle about them and are actually a little heavier than the New Beats. That being said, if I had to pick one of the two particular pairs, I would choose the New Beats. I’ve had them both for almost 4 years and the New Beats are my “desert island” hats. I love them. Also have some 16” Avedis hats (the new ones that are supposed to look vintage) that are INCREDIBLY versatile and are also at the top of my list.
Lorenzo Maximo - I have some 15 sweets too. Don’t play them much actually, although they aren’t much different that the 15 New Beats I have that I play all the time. I have learned that I like heavier hats more (even though my particular pair of 15 new beats are kinda light). I have some 16 k lights that don’t get played a lot either. Just not as crisp as the heavier pairs.
@@RazeTheWeak I hear what you're saying. The problem with most high hats is the weights are not consistent. Thus the exact same model doesn't mean they'll sound the same. I've got a set of 60s hats that I will never part with. A Sizzle nicely and have a nice dry stick sound.
To be fair, they are both great choices. Hard to tell in a blind test, even with modern recording equipment. Had a pair of 15 K pets from the late 80s/early 90s. Sold them like a dumbass and they quit making them. Still regret that choice to this day.

There is no winner here. They are both equally great. I would have to have both. As these are my top 2 favorites.
Gonna go back on my word. After having both pair for several years, I now favor the new beat hats over the Ks. They are just so crisp and versatile.
