  • Both great sets of hats. New Beats have a larger difference between top hat and bottom hat weight. They also sit between the clean crispness of A Customs and the dark sizzley sound of the Ks.

      I don't see where 1 is better. They both sound great. Just different. Some songs would be suited better for 1 and other songs suited better for the other. The New beats sounds like it would be better 8n a live setting and the other would definitely do better in a recording situation. The New Beat has more resonance for sure. So to someone unfamiliar with recording or studio settings or just not a lot of experience in musical sounds. That and putting together different sounds and resonance together for different situations might would assume 1 sounds better than the other. But that would be the same as saying a crash sounds better than a splash. However there is undesirable sounds like when you have very tin like sounds like on a very cheap symbol. So in that situation you could definitely say another sounds better. Those have a lot of unwanted vibrations and unwanted resonances that muddy the SQ. But if you have 2 quality symbols like in this situation 1 doesn't sound better than the other. It's just suited for different situations and music styles. But sound is also subjective. Like a lot of people who listen to headphones like Bass heavy headphones like Beats but these style of headphones are very muddy and a true audiophile wi pick up on that instantly. Those headphones sound great to most people. But audiophiles will notice the Bass is not true Bass and it tends to muddy the other mids and highs. But most people like the fake vibrating Bass that has been added with altercations. But then you have headphones like V-Moda that uses true Bass that is real punching hard Bass with no added vibrations and keeps the highs and miss and other instruments equal in the mix while still being desirable to Bass heads. If I was in a studio setting I would use the A if I was doing more songs that are not using much resonance from the hi hat. But if I was doing something more symbol forward like some musical or a song that had the treble forward or was doing more of a hip hop or R&B I would use the New Beat. Just my opinion though. There is no right or wrong way to like music. Some people like the sound of cheap symbols. Some bands made there living useing cheap instruments for there unique sounds. It's like cooking. Be creative and experiment and try your own stuff to be different. Some people try to learn by going by the rules and doing it by the book. When in reality it's ART! Be creative and don't be afraid to use whatever sounds good to you. Some people would be surprised if they threw all the books out the window and just made what they thought sounded good to them. I have a friend that does a lot of gigs in Nashville and plays in a few cover bands. He actually has a few drum sets that he mix matches brands. He will use a Tama Bass drum a pearl floor tom a Mapex floor tom then A tom from say DW and Yamaha Ludwig. He will throw together sets like this and even uses different styles of wood to get different sounds. That way he sounds like no other drummer. It actually sounds amazing.

    They are both great, but a more delicate stick on the open/close action would show the New Beats to be more musical and better for acoustic accompaniment. Still, the A Customs are a nice compromise for including corded instruments. I play in a lot of trios and quartets and the "less is more" way of playing favors the New Beats for lower volume. I use a very vintage (1966) set of Zildjian Avedis which are very thin with a pronounced bell and they sound very much like the New Beats. It would be nice to see different types of sticks and brushes in these hi hat demonstrations.

Since then I have accumulated many more cymbals as well as upgrading to a professional recording setup. I have been tossing around the idea of redoing these comparisons, but as you might understand, it’s a lot of work and a huge time commitment. Maybe one day. Until then, maybe someone can benefit from these. Cheers!

    Electric guitar player here and new to drums. So the new beats I imagine are thicker? Sound darker? more suitable for rock and heavy rock and almost everything else? The A customs sound thin and light so more suitable for Jazz? My 8 year old son plays U2, Coldplay, GNR, MJ. So I'm guessing New Beat would be better for that application?

    • @RazeTheWeak
      @RazeTheWeak  Před 3 lety +1

      They are both extremely versatile. I almost get the feeling that the a custom model is a replica of the new beat, but with finer lathing and a brilliant finish. I think the a customs are great, but nothing beats the new beat sound. They are the most popular hi hat ever made for that very reason.

    • @isihernandez9752
      @isihernandez9752 Před 3 lety +1

      Well, it's always a matter of taste but I wouldn't say the A customs are jazz oriented at all. The New Beats though, are been used by jazz drummers for a while. They were in fact designed by Louis Bellson/Zildjian, but they result so versatile that they can perfectly suit for a wide variety of genres, including most of rock styles and variations. However it ain't frequent a jazz drummer playing with A Custom hats, they're quite bright, even harsh sometimes, and that's something jazzers don't usually like so much, so they're mostly used for rock and other styles that requires some "cut".
      But it's all a matter of preferences at the end of the day; I play mostly rock and my favourite hi hat is being the 15" K light for some years now... To be honest, I like A custom crashes but not the hi hats or rides at all.
