I have a cat that is a terror when it comes to cutting nails.... It is to the point that her vet now sedates her because we all look like we have rammed our hands and arms through broken glass. I don't like sedating her so I was in search if a solution. I saw this video and tried it. I couldn't get her to "roll" with the blanket so I had to improvise. I never thought about using another towel to cover her eyes. But it worked. We got 3 paws done quickly and I had to let her go. But I eventually got the other paw done. There wasn't hair flying everywhere and she was not as stressed. The best part is, I only came out of this with 2 small scratches!

Jenece Amiker I know. I can't find the 2nd one to help. But, my Siamese is overdue for his mani/pedi and one way or the other, I've got to get it done. A few months ago, I had a friend take me to a vet's to do it. They work in twos, they don't have the cat's human "mom" in the room and they're very quick. My cat doesn't seem any the worse. But, I'm late again and didn't feel like spending $18 plus cab fare there ad back to get it done. Perhaps I'll try the burrito one more time. If you don't hear back from me, that means he's nicked a femoral artery and left me to bleed out....kidding...well sort of kidding...I do suspect that blood will be out there and it won't be his. ;)

He's ready for another mani/pedi as he woke me up this morning with a scratch on my lip and my face. He forgets that those Siamese talons of his can hurt people. I tried to fake it and pretend I was still asleep but, then he began to give me a morning facial with his tongue! When I peeked out with one eye and tried to move away those big baby blues of his were inches away from me! :D Thanks for checking in on me! LOL!

I think the most important part is to be calm. Animals sense distress very well and if you aren't calm, it just adds to the cats frustration. I use to work at a veterinary clinic and if any of the owners of their cats were anxious, it would making assisting the animal rather hard. This is a good video. I liked how the man stayed assertive and very very calm. The blanket is a great method to use as well. Thanks!

  • @Ski44ver
    @Ski44ver  Před 11 lety +31

Thanks for your comments. The main idea behind this approach with my toe-sensitive cat, is to help provide a place were they fee "safe" and to also restrict their movement. I roll up the soft fuzzy blanket so that she can breath but also can't really get her claws out to scratch me. If I remain calm, this helps the cat pick up my emotions and also be a bit calmer. The blanket "tube" allows only two ways to escape, front or back. So, make sure you praise the cat for being calm. :-)

today I finally decided I was gonna follow through with clippin my cats nails because his claws are so damn sharp couldn't take it anymore pinching me while sitting on my lap. Hes a nice cat but I still wasn't able to trim his nails as he attacks the nail clippers. I wrapped him in a towel tightly both arms were sticking out and it worked out perfectly would be even easier if there was a second person to help me. I put on gardening gloves and as he was struggling wrapped in the towel I fed him treats to ease his stress and to make positive association. it actually worked I managed to get all his front nails. Back nails are not necessary as they are not sharp. you really just have to hold the cat tight and tighten the towel, the tighter the towel(not tight to the point where its torture) just tight enough to hold the cat in place. also where gloves if you are nervous and feed the cat a treat meanwhile.

Bless you for showing so much love and patience to a kitty with such a terrible past. This reminds me of the time I was trying to trim the claws of a feisty young cat, who kept escaping from the towel. Since there was nobody around to help me, I shut us both into the bathroom so she couldn't run away. Then I wrapped her tightly in a bigger blanket, with just her head poking out, and and lay on the floor with her body tucked under mine and one front paw poking out. I thought I had all the sharp parts under wraps - until she whipped her head up and bit right through my lower lip! She is 12 now, still feisty, and it still takes two people to clip her claws. TIP: A towel wrap is a good way to get a resistant cat into a pet carrier - just roll them in the towel, place "purrito" into carrier, then pull out the towel!

Place the towel down on the floor so it's ready. Fold slightly wider than the cat's lengths nose to tail. Invite your cat, if willing, to come over to be petted. Bribe with a treat, yum! If not willing, gently pick your cat up and bring over to the pre-positioned towel. Pet nicely, telling her (my cat's a girl) what a good cat she is. At this "happy-point", you press down on the back of the cat & they will squat down on their belly. Flip up the edge & start rolling feet outside at first.

Wow, what a kind and patient man you are; giving a cat that probably lived out her first years in sheer hell, the love and care that all sentient beings long to have. There isn't the least bit of feeling threatened or anger in your voice. You're smart enough to know that her fear and anger aren't personal towards you, really. It's about her environment growing up. Good for you, for giving her a chance at life. There aren't enough people like you in the world, but unkindly, there are far too many, willing to let many dogs and cats have litter after litter, without a thought for where those offspring will live. If they live;; how they live. No thought whatsoever. I don't understand people like that; and the dogs bred for fighting.....disgusting.
Anyway this cat.......that she may actually live out her final years as a trusting and happy furry being, is a real heart warming possibility and a testament to how human beings can live to their best potential. I don't think I have ever said this to anyone on You Tube, but thanks for being the kind of human being you turned out to be; your parents must be awesome, too
And thanks for sharing that, right from the beginning; how you rolled her in a small carpet/big towel and then used another towel to protect yourself (and ultimately her) from her teeth and claws. I wondered if you started trimming the back claws, because if she had gotten loose while starting with the front, she could have kangerooed you into a bloody mess with her un-clipped back claws? So, just wondered if that was your reasoning behind starting with the back claws. Also, does rolling her in that small long carpet act like a sort of Valium.? I've heard the pressure of those Thunder Shirts wrapped around the torso of a dog, does calm them, and so I wondered if it was the same principal for cats. Thanks again. Good lesson for the skittish with equally skittish kitties.

Is it better to try and apply the cutting pressure from the left and right
    or up and down ?

Nice job! Darling cat. You're so sweet and gentle with her!!
Thanks for this video which provides a HUMANE alternative to declawing (which, as you know, is a horrific amputation of the last joint of the foot.) Great video!

I recently took in a stray cat, quite friendly but her claws are quite long. What tool are you using to cut your cats claws?

OMG. This actually worked! I have a feral cat that is adorable. She's been with me for 5 months but she is so skittish. She doesn't like being pet or handled. I got a hold of her just before her dinner and wrapped her snug in a large towel. She was immobile. I cuddled her and re-assured her and gave her a few kisses, then went to work. All claws clipped. She growled but didn't try to bite or fight. Then I let her go, fed her and she's a happy kitty not getting her claws caught on the carpet. Thank you!

My cat used to let me trim her nails as long as she had treats in sight so she knew there would be a reward. But in the last few months that has stopped working and she doesn't let me go near her at all with the trimmers.
I have heard about the 'burrito method' before but thought that my cat would scratch my face off before I even got her wrapped up. My boyfriend and I just tried again but this time we covered her face like you did in your video and it went much smoother! thanks for the demonstration!

Please can you tell me what nail clippers you are using. Lily my cat has a problem with two of her nail curling around into her pad. The vet trimmed her nails last year and Lily was very very traumatised, growling and hissing. So I have now started working on a treat reward training gently getting her to let me touch her paws, pick her up etc. Hoping gradually to get her to let me trim her nails at home. Lily came to me aged 7 when my sister passed away. I'm not sure I could get her into a roll like that and I am quite nervous about trimming her nails. I think your calm approach helps. So I need to work on training myself as well as Lily, lol

This takes a lot of practice and patience. With Buster, I am lucky to get one or two claws trimmed at a time which is no easy undertaking. I also have much more success when he is sleepy.
