  • Thank you for watching my video!
    This video explains the basics of cat nail trimming. Please always use caution when trimming your cat's nails, and seek veterinary advice when necessary. Cats can be taught to tolerate nail trimming, please do not declaw your cat as it causes them lifelong discomfort.
    If you find abandoned cats/kittens but are unable to care for them yourself, please reach out to a no-kill shelter in your area. Often they are able to pick up the cats if you don't have transportation. Every cat's life matters!

    To all those having a hard time/doing it by themselves- you can always cut just a couple nails at a time over the course of a few days:) work your way up to one paw per sitting and then pretty soon it’s very manageable! 🥰

    I don't approve of timing a nail trim when a cat has been sleeping. From the cat's point of view, it is an attack; naps and sleep should be safe time for their mental and physical health, just like for humans.

    • @TheEarWiggle
      @TheEarWiggle  Před rokem +8

      This is true but it really depends on the cat. I have one that wants to play with the nail trimmers, but if I do it when they're dozing on my lap they ignore the trimmer and basically sleep through it :)

      @@TheEarWiggle Agreed. Many of us have a cat or two who defy usual behavior. I have one who really likes -- not merely tolerates -- belly rubs. I was initially wary when he began to present his belly, but he was sincere and without inner conflict about wanting to be stroked there. He has rather dense fur on his chest and abdomen, so perhaps it feels very soothing. He was not raised around dogs or another cat with similar behavior. Nail trimming for us is timid, resigned compliance with one cat and escape attempts by the other. The second cat is always be lured by the proffered treats, even though he knows his pointy ends are at risk.

      I usually have a second person paralyze my cat with a neck pinch. And then plenty of kitty treats afterwards. But I've learned how not to cut the quick! That would be like cutting one of our fingers off! If you are not sure, have a professional cut your pet's nails!

    The only thing that's ever worked for me is the kitty burrito method. We've reached the stage of grim acceptance where she sees me bring out the clipper and grab the blanket, then afterwards she glares at me while she grooms herself. All I even try to do is get the pointy tips off, she's great at using her scratching posts and mat.

    • @TheEarWiggle
      @TheEarWiggle  Před rokem +2

      Sometimes for one reason or another they just won't let us trim their nails. Next time you take your cat in for a checkup ask the vet if there is anything causing her pain in her feet. If she has something like arthritis that might be why she doesn't want her feet touched. It's a long shot but I've heard of this happening. If there's no health or pain issue, then try getting a second person to help. If one of you scruffs her and holds her, the other could trim her nails. Give her treats afterward, and hopefully with time it'll get better

      Hi Stacy! Yeah I need to upload more here haha :) The main thing is to be consistent when trimming their claws, always give treats no matter which method you try, and give them plenty of positive reinforcement :) Say nice things to them the whole time even if you're frustrated, they can't understand the words, but they can understand the tone of your voice :) If you trim on a schedule (such as every other Monday for example) that can also help them adjust, and they'll look forward to the treats :)

      Are you free feeding your cat? If you are, I've heard that feeding them on a schedule helps, it makes them much easier to 'train' (if you will), apparently. I've also watched another video where they say to start off by touching their paws and getting them used to that, before working your way up to clipping one nail, feeding them a treat, then letting them go, until you've worked your way up to clipping all their nails in one sitting. Their main advice was starting real slow and being really patient. I'm sure if you look up more nail clipping advice video's, you'll find it. It's much better than my little explanation.

    Or just make or buy some scratch posts and take a few minutes to teach your cat to use...They will make it a habit to scratch the thing that feels best for them...cats should be allowed to keep their claws sharp...

    • @TheEarWiggle
      @TheEarWiggle  Před rokem +3

      Scratch posts are great, but some cats don't keep their nails short enough on their own. For those it's best to trim their nails so they don't get them caught in the carpet while walking, or so the nails don't curl under and poke their paw pads :)

    My cat hates this. I use treats as well and I sit on the floor and put her on my lap, if I don't she gets away. I have to do it so fast, she'll have like 15-20 seconds of patience and then she's done and starts trying to get away. If I continue on much longer after that she'll start giving me warnings like tail wagging and growling, thankfully she's not very quick to bite or scratch tho. For that I'd have to really ignore her warnings.

    May I ask where you get your trimmers? Is there a really good brand? Thank you!

    • @TheEarWiggle
      @TheEarWiggle  Před rokem

      Any brand is good, but they all get dull over time, so you'll eventually have to replace them. Some have blades you can replace, they cost more up front but are cheaper over time. I recommend getting a brand and style that is easy for you to hold in your hand, and also one that allows you to see what you're doing when trimming their nails. That will be different for everyone, but no matter how good the brand is it doesn't matter if you have trouble holding it or seeing what you're doing. Safety first :)

      It can be a little more difficult when the cat fights you this much. It's possible he's feeling pain or discomfort as well. Sometimes vets or groomers can help. If you can get a few successful nail trims with their help, your cat may start to calm down. If he's feeling pain, there may be some medication that can help :)

      They bite the clippers huh? Mine do! Lol play with them a bunch first to tire them out then feed them and let them lick themselves and then trim! It’s much easier when they are tired and full! Also try doing just a few nails at a time over the course of a few days. Start leaving the clippers out occasionally with treats by them so they learn that the clippers are a good thing 🥰
