In this video we attempt to return my gandpas rare 42 model ford that has only 28,000 miles by driving it 100 miles thru the tennessee mountains . It has been parked for 16 years and is in really good shape for its age because it has been stored inside . it has a flathead inline 6 , and a 3 speed manual on the column . This car is a real time capsule.

Hi brother.
Be careful with electrical pump in fuel environment. At least isolate the electrical cable connections. Spike can cause fire.
Nice to see 3 generations cruisin in the ol girl
Try blowing into fuel line backwards once there bro .i bet it has a mouse tail going up the line..lol. It happens on old ones. My 55 Chevy truck does it repeatedly almost everytime I drive it..lol
@Doctor MENGELE pretty cool someone else thinks same as myself. U know there's trash blocking the pick-up. Could be a single rust flake or chip sideways on tube like a piece of paper and shop vac.
Or that rust caught in an upwards bend in the line
I hope Ralphie-boy realizes how special these moments are that he shares with his old dad. There's going to come a day when he looks back on this time and wishes he could have just five minutes of it back. You have an amazing family, my friend!!! May God bless you ALL!!! (Even Rocky and granny goat!)
I hope he does , I am blessed
Maybe not now, but one day he will look back and remember the special times he had with his dad.
My last message should have said tube not tune. The word editor on CZcams or my phone keeps changing the plural of tube to tunes.
This comment is absolutely true. I have two sons, one is 12 and one is 9 and I'd LOVE for them to be into learning anything about cars like I did from a friend's dad who owned a shop after I got ripped off by Sears, but I can't pry them away from their Playstation and Xbox. BTW, I am a cancer survivor and I wasn't supposed to be able to have kids, and I'm also the first in six generations to have two boys because it's always been two girls and a boy.
@@mikefrazier1814 I hear ya bud. I was one of the guys who started calling Orion from Haggard Garage Onion because my phone would always autocorrect Orion to Onion. Then everyone started calling him that.
What a thrill for Ralphie!
My mother taught me how to drive a stick in a 1972 Volvo 144. It was probably 1977/78 and I was 8 or 9. Not long after that she suffered a massive stroke and we lost her in 1980. So glad we made happy memories together when we could! 🥰
That’s great that she did that , sorry you lost her
The amount of rust in the filter means that the tank is really bad, and I would think the fuel lines are pretty well full of rust now. That would cause the problems you are having with fuel delivery.
Rusty fuel tank.
Your probably right
Replace the fuel pump diaphragm and blow out lines before hooking up line to pump
Carbs need their accelerator pumps to maintain and increase fuel delivery when opening the throttle. Any time the vehicle requires more throttle, the accelerator pump is used to compensate for reduced intake vacume. Older carbs had leather pump diaphragms, and they dry out, become worn, and suffer from dirt. Carburation is becoming a lost art, and its shameful. At its root, carburation is the science used for so many things, including fuel injection.
@@70ixlr86 A carburetor is an aspirator and an excellent example of how Bernoulli's Law works.
I should do videos on how to rebuild carbs since I "cut my teeth" on them in the mid 70s as a teenager.
Interested in learning how to rebuild a Rochester Quadrajet??? Because if you can rebuild one of those, you can rebuild ANY carburetor!
Man, I Had only 4 days off in 2021, and you totally chewed up all of them. Found your channel and watched almost all of your videos. Love how you involve the whole family and even the goats. (Rocky is my favorite) Lots of love to you and yours from a grateful subscriber in South Africa.
Wow that’s awesome !!!! Thanks for watching sorry I took up all your time off Happy New Yesr
Most kids probably talking about what video game they played all weekend while Ralphie is out driving great grandpa’s 1940 Ford with a three on the tree. And riding a goat lol. Priceless!
It’s definitely a different way of life at our house
@@Sleeperdude and that’s a good thing! Keep doing what you do!
My dad taught me how to drive a stick on a 1963 Mercury in about 1960 when I was 10. I remember it like it was yesterday. Still building hot rods and riding my Panhead bobber. You have a great family.
That’s great thank you
@@Sleeperdude get an electric fuel pump for her or check Kanters
How did you drive a 63 Mercury 3 years before it was built?
@@Sleeperdude I'm a math wiz. Well I used to be until the "...Learned to drive a '63 in 1960..., comment. Bless his heart.
Funny s...I never picked up on that.
I just love to see father and son having fun together!
Thanks
From the amount of RUST particulate that keeps plugin the fuel filter, I would have to think that the fuel tank is rusted beyond being usable, back then these fuel tanks were made of steel not Galvanized like later years. The only way to stop all the trash making it`s way into the carburetor is to replace the fuel tank, then flush the fuel through the mechanical pump before connecting to the carburetor, definitely install the largest fuel filter you can to protect the most important component of metered fuel delivery, the Carburetor. It would be a good idea to remove the carburetor and rebuild it also. If not, you will continue to have starting & drive ability issues with the car due to the rusted fuel tank. Love your videos. You have a beautiful family, may God bless.
Thank you so much. Yes I think you are right
I have restored several old car. I clean the gas tanks with vinegar and a short piece of chain because it's easier to get out than nut and bolts. Then coat the inside with Red Coat it's cheaper than Por 15. Love you channel
I learned in a '48 Ford. Nice to see a young man learning the right way. Cool car.
Thank you
It must have been awesome growing up around your Grandpa! He seems like a good dude to know! Happy New Year to you and yours!
Yes he was great thank you
I can see where your love of cars comes from.
It was great to see the different generations of your family taking that trip together.
Happy new year
Thank you Happy New Year
@@Sleeperdude You made my heart do a flip flop when I saw the '57 Chevy in your grandpa's garage.
What a great dad.
Someday, Ralphie's going to be a great dad too.
Wow … I hope so
One thing to remember on these old cars is the radios were tube type. They sometimes took a minute or so to warm up before they worked. Those gaskets on those oil filters were a PITA. And polarizing the generator would help.
I didn’t think of that thanks
What a Blessed, Christian family you all are. You are creating memories that will live on forever!! The expression your Grandpa's face driving that car is PRICELESS. Plus, I've been a Blue Oval guy since the middle sixties, so there's that...LOL Merry Christmas and Happy New year to you all and your viewers.
I am very blessed thank you for watching
I’d already forgotten about the old garage until coming across this again by happenstance. One can only imagine how much happier Josh & the Gang have been loving all the space to work…
Merry Christmas 🎁 2023
The patina on that car is just beautiful. Nothing better than a stock and original car. It’s covered in lots of stories snd history. ❤️
Yes your right
Those are some great memories that you're making with your son and family! They'll stand the test of time for sure!
I hope so thank you
So cool that you are staring to get paid sponsors. Good job DUDE.
Thank you, that definitely helps make this all possible
I like the way you are training your son to drive "farm Equipment" off road teaching him to respect the equipment.
Thank you, that’s the way I learned
44:16 Your grandfather's satisfaction was also ours on this side of the screen of our mobile phones... As always, it's a pleasure to browse your videos 👍
Yes for sure thank you
I love to see you do a collaboration with VGG. He is in Tenn also.
Yes that would be awesome
Way to go Ralphie 👏 good job buddy. Way to go dad. God bless you and your family.
Thank you
Ralphie such memories when he get older the times he spent with his Dad fixing car PRICELESS!!!!
You are so lucky to have your grandfather and your boy is golden, so well behaved, 4 generations of good people
Yes I am
So cool seeing him driving time well spent together
Yes it was
Love the 42 Ford! I think it's my favorite of all. Sounds like it's starving for fuel going up those hills. Could very well be the fuel pump. My buddy's motor home did that and it turned out to be the rear pump was no good. I think you made you grandpa pretty happy.
I think you are right thank you
@@Sleeperdude they had a overheating problem fuel pump rod s or cam had a 47woodie front distributor a headache if wet .need t o keep extra generator if you drive it. Farther than you can walk ✔️ the vibrator on the radio .
I love these videos, great family interaction. My grandfather has a junk car yard in the 20s and 30s. My father and his two
Brothers worked on the old cars. My father and older brother both joined Navy in WW11 and worked on Black gangs
(Engineering). After the War dad switched to Air Corps, and MOS was Aircraft Maintenance. We always did our own
vehicle maintenance, and I spent many days and hours working on our cars. They were great days, I learned a lot.
I missed those days, and cherish the memories!
glad to see you teach Ralphie how to drive a standard shift, its becoming a lost art, most kids these day cant drive a stick, and cant write in cursive hand writing, Kudos to you sir!
Yes that’s true there are more electric cars now sold than manual transmission cars
Watching you getting Ralphie involved with your projects always make me think of the hours I spent with my dad as a young kid learning how to keep the old family cars going. We didn’t have access to or resources to run to the parts store, so many Saturdays were spent in the two local junk yards pulling parts to make sure that everyone could get to work or school on Monday morning. I’m 76 now and rarely attempt to do anything on the modern cars I drive. Rest assured that you are creating memories that your kids will cherish long after you are gone. Happy New Year, God bless you and your family and keep up the great work.
Thank you I appreciate it I am blessed
Congratulations Ralphie!!
Great moments with your dad.
Thank you
Love this scene with the two great-grandchildren riding in a car 80+ years old. Maybe it will be theirs in years to come!
Yes very cool
I am from LA and I worked for the studios in the IATSE for years and so did my Dad. I enjoy seeing REAL people for a change. I kind of of resent the brat pack kids from Malibu who got such a head start in life and don`t even appreciate it. My Great Great Great Grandparents are from Ruttlidge Tenn.
Oh wow. That’s cool thank you
Nice to see the family helping
Yes I am blessed
Ralphie, my 1st three cars were manual shift. The shifting gets to be second nature after a short time, you won't even have to think about it. You automatically do it...
My shifting was so smooth, a co-worker thought it was an automatic...He asked me why I was fiddling with the shifter so much. I told him, because it's a 4-speed manual shift car....
That’s too funny
That rope across the back seat is for a lap robe. In the winter a lap blanket was hung on it for passengers to keep warm in those bitter cold winters. It also helped the ladies make an elegant entrance and exit. My 27 Dodge Brothers has one along with a floor heater that siphoned heat from the exhaust pipe. Thanks for the memories.
That was cub scout’s honor. Boy Scouts is three fingers. Great video. This brought back memories of the old fiat in my back yard I used to sit in and pretend to be driving when I was a kid.
I absolutely love this car !!! Its great that you got it going for your Grandpa and he can then use it! Brilliant stuff!
Thank you
That car looks wonderful going down the road. In that fog, it looked like you were runnin shine back in the day.
We thought it looked pretty neat as well
I am 79 and my son is 54. These early years form a bond that is unbreakable. We bounce of each other with memories. Good Times.
That’s awesome
“A” for efforts brother!! Just the departure from your homestead was nostalgic! Very memorable! That has to be THE most precious car yet on CZcams!! It’s a time capsule because as you know, due to WWII, by summer 42, nothing was made in this republic that didn’t go for the war effort! That’s what makes it a priceless piece of Americana!! Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you I appreciate it
Happy New Year Sleeperdude.
Blowing the horn while dad is under the hood never gets old.
Happy New Year, he loves doing it
Love the 42. It deffinately needs a fuel pump. My 51 V8 did the same thing and I had to add an electric pump due to flat lobe on the cam.
Ok thank you

Absolutely enjoyable video. New subscriber here and my first video watched, I already feel like a part of your family. One day I'll be watching Ralphie deliver that old GMC pickup to you.
Glad you enjoyed it. Your probably right he loves trucks tractors and motorcycles!! Thanks for watching
I'm sure grandpa was happy to get the 42 back out. These old cars never get too old to enjoy.
Yes he was excited thank you
Good times! Your son will always remember this time with Dad.

Ralphie doing good learning to shift ...Rocky to help as always ...great video
Thank you we appreciate it
Thats really cool that you have that connection with your grandpa. My grandfather had a 65 Ford truck that I wanted but I don't know what ever happened to it. It was his farm truck that was low miles and good condition.
Yes I’m glad we are close thanks for watching
So good to see people like you respect your father, and involving your family, and give importance to your families treasure old cars.
Thank you I appreciate it
Happy New Year. I believe the vacuum tubes on the radio need a little warm up time. It usually takes a little while, if it does work. Could be a speaker issue like you said though. There used to be a oil filter conversion kit that actually used a roll of toilet paper if I wasn't dreaming I saw it. 😆
Ok thank you
JC Whitney used to have those toilet-paper filters in their cataloged. Never thought it was a good idea.
Agree on the radio. Before the transistor, tubes were used in auto radios. They take a little time to warm up before the unit will produce sound.
@@richlaw1965 I can attest to that. When I bought s 51 Ford. I assumed the radio did'nt work, untill I let it warm up.
What a great New Year now with this video! Hope Rocky and the wives are doing well!! And of course we gotta wish Y'all a very Happy New Year for all that you bring us selflessly!!
Thank you Happy New Year
Ralphie will never forget these lessons! he's a smart Boy! thats how I learned, my Dad taught me and then i whent to work on the farm
I hope so thank you
these old cars last forever that's what i love about any classic car or truck
They do if you keep them inside
An acquaintance I once met who picked up old vehicles on his trucking trips across the country had a kit he carried with him The fuel filters were one item, and an electric fuel pump was another. Watch Gramps shift, he has the method. Pause a 1/2 second in neutral between gears.
That’s a good idea
More great content, great seeing your grandfather drive
Thank you . Yes I was glad he drove it we are gonna stay on him about keeping it on the road
Fond family car memories are priceless. My family childhood care memories were always breakdowns on long trips and lots of cussing from my father
That’s funny
THe change from the '41 to the '42 is amazing. Just by filling in the curves between the engine and the guard/fender and changing the grill, the car looks 20 years more modern.
Thank you
love that car. Ralphie is a lucky boy. You all are a great bunch of folk. Happy New Year to all. Keep up the great content. PEACE.
Thank you I really appreciate the positive feedback
@@Sleeperdude much obliged.

i learned to drive a stick shift in downtown Spokane during rush hour. dad gave me the car and said i will meet you in the valley for lunch i did good, didn't kill the engine or scratch gears, and got a free lunch.
That’s great
Hello happy New Year's to you and your family sleepersdude. Man that was awesome seeing Ralphie driving grandpa's car. That said that you couldn't drive it all the way back to Grandpa's house. But it definitely was a good try. Ralphie had my laughing in the video at 9:10 trying to open the bottle & in the video at 16:26 that was cool watching you driving with your shoes on man. What was really awesome was to see Grandpa driving his 42 Ford with his grandson & his great-grandson in the car with him. That is a great memory right there & an awesome picture too. You know I really love the end when Ralphie volunteered really really fast to wear your flip-flops & watching you put them on his feet was cool to watch. I am surprised you didn't have them on. Sleepersdude question? Do Ralphie like wearing flip-flops? It was cool seeing him having your flip-flops on his feet. My son would do the same thing. He will go put my Flip flops on which is a sz15 on his feet which is a sz 9 & then go try to wear them to the store and people are staring at his feet & saying OK. The only good part about it is he has a very wide feet so it takes up the Gap space in the front but the back part is just way too long but it's funny to see him trying to walk in them. Happy New Year's to you buddy and I'm looking forward to supporting your channel for 2022.
Thank you Happy New Year to you as well . We had a lot of fun with this video and driving it as well . Ralphie will wear anyones shoes if it’s convenient for him
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
The screen is for the big pieces you don't want circulating to the filter! Surprised it has both.
Happy New Year thank you
Your grandpa has to be a sharp guy! Anyone with 2 Bridgeport mills in their garage knows his stuff!!!
Yeah he’s a smart one
You called Ralphie....."Capt. Obvious !!!!!!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yes he is always stating the obvious
Happy New Year, Sleeper, Ralphie, and Rocky! Keep it ROLLING!!👍
Happy New Year
Radio is AM stations and they aren't that popular today. Ralphie was so cute behind that steering wheel.
That’s true, thank you
Many old car radios had a power converter because the tubes they used required much higher voltages than the 6 volt battery provided. Those converters made a buzzing sound when the radio was turned on. Not sure about the 42 Ford but it probably had that system.
Ok thank you
What a beautiful old car! So glad you are saving it. Sharing it with your boy adds to the experience. So fun for your family. Love it!
Thank you
That car has a vacuum fuel pump and wipers and carb produces vacuum not very well when they get old ! My 53 Ford when it acted up I would wrap the fuel pump with a towel and pour water on it to cool it down but eventually I installed an electric pump and electric windshield wipers and boy what a difference that made ! I paid $75 for it in 1974 and drove it for 10 years , I should have never sold it !
Ok thanks ..
Great video! Thanks for taking us along for the ride! You are truly blessed to have your grandfather still in your life. I just wish I had a grandson to spend time with and help me work on my projects.

My dad always let us drive the vehicles from sitting on his lap because we couldn’t reach the pedals to driving on our own by the age of 7-10…

I'm 81 yrs old and I have a 1947 ford, and the access hole drain plug was so you could turn the engine over and tighten rod bearings and check back lash etc. You've got a jewel there save it for your son, keep it original, mine still has the mohair seats and door panels, you have a keep sake from your Gpa that will be in your memory forever, Jim las vegas nv
Ok thank you I didn’t know that

I learned how to work on cars from my dad and grandpa. Grandpa passed away this summer. I'll be getting his 79 ford mustang going and back on the road. Its all about the memories.
That’s right make memories while you can happy new year
As I learned from my dad (who was a machine engineer) once upon a time, at that time there were no synchronized transmissions (that started in the late 50ies) so you do yourself a favor, if you shift with intermediate throttle, then the gears go in easier...and the shifting gets smooth ;) :)
From the amount of debris in the oil filter when you cleaned it, you can see that the car was probably not shifted with intermediate throttle, resulting in increased metal wear on the gears. If you do this in the future, your oil will stay cleaner longer.
Ok thank you
Nothin' like a multi-generation family enjoying each other around the farm tellin' stories laughin', gigglin' and ridin' in Grandpa's old cars.
Yes making memories for sure
4 generations of your family have gotten to drive that car. Priceless memory. Probably fuel pump as your thinking. 80yr old diaphragm inside possibly cracked. Happy New Years.

Are you SURE that's a 42? Very rare given Pearl Harbor. That rarity alone may make it worth a lot no matter what condition it's in.
Yes for sure thanks
Ralphie did a good job of driving. It's amazing how well he handles those vehicles. You need to get him a pillow to sit on. I'm sure he could drive even better when he can see where he is going. I used to sit with my left leg under me to be tall enough to see to drive, but that was driving an automatic. But that wouldn't help him when there's a clutch pedal to work.
Yeah your right we will have to put him on a pillow or books or something
