KTM 390 Adventure - What Went Wrong ?

- I stopped riding the KTM 390 Adventure last fall. What happened? Find out how the 390's throttle assembly failed and required a repair. Now the KTM is fixed, do I still like it, and more importantly, is the KTM reliable enough to take on an adventure?

I have a 2021 with 1.3K miles. I have had no issues with it.
Thx for the feedback!
I've done 12 k miles on 390s. Absolutely no problems. Based on the forums and my experience the 390 is very reliable. I can afford any adventure bike available, but the 390 is my choice. Persevere with the 390.
I have a 2022 myself and have not experienced any issues with the bike with just under a 1,000 miles on it. The throttle feels solid and responsive. Appreciate you sharing your experience. Always nice to get a heads up on potential issues.
Glad to hear it and thank you for sharing. Happy riding!
The throttle issue is well known and is covered under warranty by KTM. It usually happens when the bike is first turned on and is alleviated by turning the bike off and back on until the throttle body sensor is replaced. In my experience, removing the resonator did affect the power curve, especially when coupled with an aftermarket slip on and actually negatively affected my higher rpm performance. I did install the FuelX lite which helped with throttle response at lower rpm, but as it is a fuel modifier only (does not change timing), it doesn’t have much effect at higher rpms, for that you will need to do a remap. At this point I put the resonator back on, and it restored the higher rpm torque and I’m planning on replacing the entire exhaust and remapping the ECU once completed to gain the full potential of the exhaust upgrade.
I guess mine failed differently because it was completely unridable after I got home. I'm glad I'm not alone in this problem though.
My 2023 390 Adv has no problems.
It runs as it should do.
But the feel and reaction of the electronic throttle is a little "smoother or slower" than the cable versions.
best regards from Germany.
Thx for the feedback on your 2023 KTM 390 Adv, glad to hear it's running well. Interesting observation about the cable vs ride by wire. At this point I'd take the cable.
Hi
Unfortunatly (excuse for my bad english)
there is no cable throttle for this model.
My comment was based on my early experience.
best regards from Germany
To reset the throttle, with everything turned off at first. Turn key on, make sure engine run switch is in on position, do not start, wait for gauges to load. Twist throttle slowly to full open, then slowly close. Turn key off. You should hear the throttle body open and close as you do this or hold your hand on the engine and you might be able to feel it. You are now done with the reset.
will this work with fuel x lite plugged in? or should i take it off?
It's just recalibrating the throttle sensor, you can leave the fuel x hooked up.
I’ll give that a shot in a min, and thank you
@@tsdmoto How did that go?
@@RYwoodview I haven't fooled with re-installing the Fuel-x but I did perform the throttle reset and the bike rides great. Thank you for following up and for the tip!
I've just bought a new ktm 390 adventure is how nice and smooth the throttle is compared to my 650 single with a mikuni tm flatslide when letting of the throttle it snaps shut like a bear trap.
I'm in the market for a small/cheap adventure motorcycle and dependability is THE reason I'm not considering a KTM at all. I'm looking at smaller bikes with less power that have more dependability (Versys-X 300, 300L rally, ect). Honestly Yamaha just needs to release a T3 to own this market like the T7 does the middle weights.
I'd also like to see Kawasaki put the Ninja 500 engine in their Versys-X. Seems so obvious to this old man.
KTM is alive again! Looks like the fuel X will help out with the flat spot.
It's good to have her running. Going to try and get the fuel-x in tonight.
I have to chuckle that you bought a KTM and had problems. All I ever hear about with KTM is electrical problems...that's why I don't buy one.
On mine the clutch cable was to tight. Around 8k rpm the bike would slip an felt like a 2 stroke powerband.
I reset the cable at the motor an added 2mm play to the handle, and shes perfect!
How much did you pay that dealer to "setup" your bike? They want $600 and then they give you a bike with a clutch cable that's not in spec.
These seem like they pack a lot of punch for 390cc. Is the aftermarket pretty good for them?
The aftermarket is very extensive
2022 Euro 5 KTM 390 ADV: 9400 km's no issues what's so ever.
Thx for the feedback!
thats why suzuki is the best
