  • I'm a huge fan of Famicom Disk System, the floppy disk add-on for Famicom. I'm joined by Chris Pico to talk about our favorite FDS games. These are all games that you don't need to know Japanese to play.

      Ai Senshi Nicol is a really fun one, a sci-fi dungeon dungeon crawler similar to the style of Zelda. Another one is Moero TwinBee, fun shooter with crazy stuff, though it did come to the US as Stinger. Lastly there is Seiken Psycho Calibur, this one is a direct Zelda clone but a bit harder, it is still a lot of fun. Lastly, the FDS version of Castlevana and Metroid, just for the music and the ability to save.

    Youkai Yashiki is definitely one of the best (probably my favorite next to Murasame Jou), seems pretty rare though. Lucky I found a copy for a good price. KiKi Kai Kai (pocky and rocky in us) is awesome. Ai Nicol (sort of like the top down parts of blaster master) is really good. Seiken Psycho Calibur (basically zelda clone). Super Mario 2 (lost levels). Not including the ones that we all know from the NES.

    Hi, John! Just curious about how you store these precious disk-formatted games. I'm sure you already know that they tend to demagnetize over time and they are quite delicate in regards to dust and humidity, so maybe you had special care when storing 'em. I dunno, I might be too obsessed about it but when I'm collecting for the system it worries me quite a while hahaha.
    Sorry for my bad English as it is not my mother tongue. Keep it up, bro.

    I've seen that sticker with Mario on it before because I've been browsing the FDS on eBay myself. Below Mario and the other character, it says "Nintendo" and "Fuji Terebi" ("Fuji Television"). It most likely symbolizes the partnership between the two companies that this game was a part of. Check out The Gaming Historian's video about the game if you want to learn more.

    These games look quite different to NES games, and not just cos of the Japanese writing/titles and not even just cos of the unrecognizable characters, theres something about the style of the games that despite essentially being run on the same hardware, they really look quite different.

    • @dingusbingus7463
      @dingusbingus7463 Před 8 měsíci +1

      Funny enough a lot of people don't know, but the disk system(and the twin Famicom) are upgrades of the FC and the NES, while the NES was slightly better than the FC the disk system added another audio channel as well as some extra RAM I believe. So on games like Castlevania 3 the music have a completely different sound compared to the cart versions. Another thing is saves for basically every game on the system, enabled by the extra space on a disk some games had like 7 save slots. I picked up a Twin a while back and have been exploring the library through emulation before I eventually invest in a setup to write the games I actually want to play onto disks. Another crazy thing is there's apparently a huge community in China still doing mods on the fc and SF, with the old game doctors where they pirates games, I recently saw one where a guy basically wrote a GUI style library where he had a HDD or something attached to his FC playing games. Possibilities are endless if you have the right info and resources

    i remember the character was looking like snoppy the dog and he has a stick that helped him
    to jump also was an ice level that was very slippery You had to collect keys to unlock a level.
    When you hit walls with the stick it will bounce off and character spins in cercles.
    I know it sounds like Duck Tales but i think is a different game.
    i think maybe is a Nintendo ROMhacks or Famicom of an original game.

    No disrespect or anything but the FDS sucks! I hate most of the games on it and the few I liked were actually really fun. This list gives me a few more to emulate on my ol' DS Lite though. Will try the Gall Force and Ultraman games. There's 3 of the latter on the FDS with 2 being action platformers and the last is just a generic RPG.
