  • On 28 October 2020, I was fortunate enough to be in Russia with a fellow enthusiast and we were able to make it to Mirny at very short notice (having just arrived in Tobolsk by train to join a scheduled An-2 flight) to join Alrosa's very last flight of the Tupolev Tu-154M. There was only one possible itinerary that would get us from Tobolsk to Mirny, arriving only 40 minutes before the Tu-154's scheduled departure. Luckily we made it, with a little help from our friends at Alrosa! The final flight was the scheduled 6R529 service from the aircraft's home base of Mirny (MJZ) to it's final resting place at Novosibirsk (OVB), where RA-85757 joined it's already retired sister ship RA-85684. After take-off from Mirny, the aircraft performed a flypast of the airport, followed by a final flypast of the town. Due to the weather on arrival at Novosibirsk, there was no flypast there, however the small handful of enthusiasts on board were allowed to remain at the aircraft for a while with a number of local enthusiasts, after the rest of the passengers had gone to the terminal or joined their onward B737-700 flight to Moscow. Not only was this Alrosa's final Tu-154M flight, it was also the world's last scheduled Tu-154M flight.

Thank you. It was a case of right place (more or less) and right time. It is an experience I will not forget.

Seems like you were all lucky to survive! The ice on the wings is the worst I have ever seen. I know wet ice (i.e. slush!) is more dangerous than dry ice but it was very evident and most airlines would have tried to remove it. The plane really was iconic. There ain't no more and they were utterly loved. Nerds are devoted to tri-planes. The sound of the Soviet engines is very reassuring (counterintuitively!). Wish such things were still being built. You were very lucky. Glad you enjoyed it. And Happy New Year!

Soviet killing machine. Thousands died flying those 'planes'.
