- Are you playing while the sequencer is running? YES!
This was the most asked question from The Moog Matriarch Solo Series tinyurl.com/ystz2d2
Ok, it's not really secret, but so many folks don't really know about it so, it might as well be....
Here's a quick vid on how to do it.

More of this, Gabe. It’s been hard to find tips and tricks for the Matriarch online in general and this was awesome.
Great. Glad it was of some help. More coming, thanks for checking it out.
You could turn off transposing and local control then patch the sequencer out to one oscillator using a attenuator as a VCA with one envelope and filter . Then setup the rest of the oscillators with a similar setup mixed into the VCAs and you have independent synth voices
COOL THX, Matriarch Sound is awesome
No sound like a Moog sound
Oh whoa. This is sooooo much more useful to me than the transpose feature. Thank you! I somehow missed this in the manual. Amazing!
Thanks so much for this. Sounds great
Wow, super cool. Thanks!
i love the matriarch sequencer. it’s simply brilliant
Me too!
Thank you sir.
You are the best! ThAnkhs so much for this!🤘🏽🕶️💜
Fantastic! This machine is so much fun.. and thanks for the obvious tip: the manual 😂!!
Thanks! Have fun!

Greetings.
Thank you man. RTFM strikes again ... I've been wondering so long ... I am so ashamed. This opens up another world for me :)
Tank you man. dude. Really appreciated this tip.
+ you're very funny !)
🙏
Glad it helped and Thanks!
Hello. Hey Gabe, thank you very much for putting this video out. This has confounded me from the beginning and will really open up ideas I wanted to expand on. I appreciate your efforts! Cheers!
Great! Hope it helps.
Very cool trick
Rad! Thank you Gabe! 🙏🏽✨✌🏽
It is Rad. Good call! 🤙🏻
I love this!
Such a treat to watch a real talent with this synth. This is one area where I feel Matrixbrute can be more interesting - true bitimbrality for playing against a sequence. (If only it had an additional globally assignable AR)
Very cool! I like your style man… Completely missed this in the manual. Yes, an actual manual in the box, I couldn’t believe it when I opened mine! New sub here for thee 👍
Thanks. Yeah,I wondered if it was possible when I first got the Matriarch. So I checked out the manual just to see …and….lo and behold, it was!
I'd want a happy ending for the price of it!
Great music and edit
Appreciate that. Thanks.
I didn’t even know this was a thing. Thank you for making this!
Yeah nice! When I discovered it, it was like “Yeeeessssss”
Ok this is groundbreaking. Thank you! This is the kind of hack that changes the instrument.
Great! Have fun
Good stuff!
Thanks for showing this 🤟
🤙🏻 no problem
@@GabeChurray loving your videos
Good to hear and much appreciated!
That’s very helpful, thanks.
Good to hear. Thank you!
Cool! Thank you
Hope it helps!
The algorithm sent me this video and I'm so glad it did. Subbed!
Thanks for letting me know. Glad it was helpful. I’ll be sure to thank the algorithm next time I see it! 😄
Show off! With your "I can actually play the keys" talent and ability.
Ever think of us plebes that bought this beast and have no clue what they are doing?
Well, I guess with more videos like these, I might actually know how to do something!
On a side note, I paired this with the new Roland J6 chord synth. It has 4 note polyphany
That’s cool. How’s that chord synth? I was intrigued when it was released.
@@GabeChurray Honestly, it sounds very Juno-esqu, and I am happy with the sounds, but the chords themselves arent spread apart very much, and I really do lack the theory to know how to get them into a song. But it triggers the Matriarchs 4 oscillators great!
I think I'm going to take some inspiration from you and try to learn from your playing a bit. Broaden my horizons
Super cool!!✨🙏🏻
I thought so too!
Awesome!
I thought it was pretty awesome too!
I am so glad someone can decipher the manual and the global settings, because that stuff looks like a DENSE engineering manual to me.
it just none of it makes any sense.
I barely understand what the patch points do. Or how to use them
So thank you for doing the hard work and bringing fire down from the mountain 😁
This really is a game changer of a setting and I can't wait to try it out
Glad it's helpful!
Hey thanks a lot, great tip I should read the manual more 😅
Me too!
What would really be cool is there was a hack to add a track or be able to sequence a track on top of an existing sequence...
That would be wild!
love the hack!!!!!!!! you gotta read manual.lol
Sick.
Did you combine it with round robin mode? Must be sick!! Then spread the oscillators over all octaves and maybe switch waveforms and maybe even sync some crazy?
Thanks for sharing this Gabe, as well as your other inspiring performances with the Matriarch. When playing against the sequencer in this way, have you noticed an issue where the notes played live are interrupted when the sequence has a tie programmed in ?
Thanks for the comment. I don’t know if I’ve specifically noticed that issue since I rarely program ties but maybe I’ll try it out and see what happens. I always assume notes are going to drop just by the nature of playing notes over the sequencer.
@@GabeChurray Thanks for the reply. Definitely given the paraphonic nature the voices are bound to jump around, but in this case even with a simple monophonic sequence running, leaving 3 oscillators free, any and all notes played live are suddenly interrupted when the tie occurs. Let me know if you get around to trying it out, cheers.
Great video! Does this technique also work with the arpeggiator?
Not to my knowledge. The arpeggiator behavior is the same regardless of this setting. Although I have noticed that if you continue holding notes, for example: a C Major chord in the left hand, and play notes in the right hand, the arpeggiator will just add the new right hand notes into the arpeggio instead of starting a completely new arpeggio. This setting might be tweak-able too. If so, maybe another video topic? 😁
do you live in asheville? i screen printed that moog bandana you have :)
Ha! Unfortunately no. Up in Virginia. My wife bought that bandana for me as a gift! It’s great and love it. Thank you!
Hey love the video, was wondering if you could help me troubleshoot something. So I've disabled the sequence keyboard control as you did in the video but my matriarch doesn't legato the notes that are not part of the sequence? i can still play them but they're very quickly cut off, almost as if the gate of the sequence is stopping the notes not linked with it from playing longer. any idea why? i also made sure all my knobs and switches were placed in the same position as you too.
Hey Matt, my first thought would be to check that the Paraphony switch is set to 4. If that doesn’t help, maybe some of the envelope settings, sustain, release? Hope this helps!
@@GabeChurray Yeah I've pretty much tried everything with no luck. I read on a forum somewhere that another person had the same issue with it but it was eventually resolved with simply repeating the steps? so I'm not sure but I'm just gonna go to the moog store and talk to someone about it. Thanks for the response though!
@@Mattsterbeats sorry to hear that. Nothing in the envelopes helped? Another thought is that maybe the Round Robin setting could mess with this? Good luck. I’m sure the folks at Moog will have some good ideas.
@@GabeChurray Figured it out! turns out i just need to update the firmware! Hey I also figured out there is a way to "transpose" the sequence in the moment. If you have a sequence running you can transpose the octave its playing in by holding down any key while the sequence is running and turning the first oscillators Octave knob!
Super well explained. I think that's what Lisa Bella Donna did in a live performance. Too bad they hid this in a hidden settings not put it somewhere on the front panel. That would have been great to flip it on the fly! There is a way though to do it though by sending system exclusive commands with a laptop or so.
Thank you, much appreciated. Whoa....yeah a little toggle for this in the sequencer module would be incredible!
@@GabeChurray I think a little max for live device could do it easily. (for Ableton live)
Can doing that cause issues with the circuit boards over time, and leave you having to recalibrate more often than normal? I’ve heard of voice circuits burning up due to “misuse”, but I don’t know
I use it all the time. Everything seems a ok over here. It’s a feature that’s in the manual.
As a Matriarch owner I really appreciate this video.
It opens a lot of doors. Thanks for the comment.
This is definitely cool, but it would've been better if they'd made a switch for this instead of it being a global setting. It's something you could easily go back and forth on a lot.
Yeah, a little toggle would be very convenient for sure.
I just don’t understand why you’d love it because it doesn’t have a screen? Just seems like difficulty for the sake of it! Kind of bizarre… like if it had keys that were difficult to press or lnob that didn’t tell you what they were for - would you love it even more?
I personally don't like working through a screen on a hardware instrument. Different strokes for different folks.
Super! Thank you! Just one thing, at czcams.com/video/Jg-MDw_e8uA/video.html the sequence is in Cm, not Fm, I guess because it's the last note you played :) But then when you switch again it's ok! Thanks man, such a great trick!
Hey Dario, good ears! Yeeeah I noticed this later.
