I've had my new GS puppy since Thursday. (8 weeks old) The beauty of having another good dog, is they teach what the puppy can do in canine society. We always start our new companion with our other trusty dog. With this girl, she's been alone since our other dog died 5 years ago. We expected attitude, she's absolutely awesome with pup. She helps show the new puppy that we don't chase chickens, or geese, or anything. Tonight she helped me round up the flock as usual, and the puppy was brilliant. Laid back but following. She goes out and pees with my older dog, and has only had one pee in the house which she forecast, I was just too slow since arriving on Thursday (it's now Monday). We go out every 2 hours, after she wakes and after meals. My older dog is showing the new pup amazing things, just by doing her "regular" job. New pup is smart as a whip- show her one thing once and she has it, they are like sponges at this age.
Thank you guys so much we get our new gsd puppy in two weeks! Been soaking up as much information as possible!!

I LOVE your videos!
I wish I was near your training center. We just adopted a 7+ month old Great Dane and I’m having so many training issues w her. I’ve had Danes for 30 years, 1,2, or 3 at a time. They have all been successfully trained and been wonderful dogs. This little lady has surpassed my ability to reach her. It’s like starting over every single day. She is very loving but an absolute tornado. Especially when I try to calm her down or correct or teach or look at her. I’m not giving up, we will get there eventually, but she does not respond or “think” like any other dog I’ve ever had. She does love the tuna trying treats you gave the recipe for though!

Thank you so very much for sharing this information! 🤓 I’m studying up for when I’m able to bring my puppy home.
I don’t want to sound ungrateful or unappreciative of your videos at all but, 🙄 could I just suggest doing your recordings when or where there isn’t someone excessively talking in the background 🤭🤦🏻♀️? I really do thank you 🙏🏻 for sharing your knowledge, not just saying the words but showing the correct ways to teach not only our pups but us as well. I realize that this will be a learning experience for both of us & consistency, patience, & love are the keys.
Hi thanks for the amazing tips. I feel like I got in way over my head so I need some motivation with my 8-wk old pup. Any tips with the jumpy and biting behavior?
If you haven’t already, get them chew toys and a tug rope so they can teeth into that and just redirect them into sitting or laying down when they jump.
How do you attach the house line to the pup so early, without them trying to bite it the whole time it is attached?
Tan Wei my problem too!!
Mine is doing the same. I know bitter apple - soaking the line in it I was told with my last pup like 12 yrs ago, but with a lab, that didn’t work. I’d like any other suggestions too!

A question about hand feeding, how much of the puppies food do you hand feed? And how do you give the rest of the food allowance?

omg what kind of puppy is this i dont think ive seen a cute one in my life 🥰
We just adopted a chihuahua fox terrier mix and he is super chill and sweet, and already crates himself and does t get into any mischief. He is 10 weeks old. I have a small toddler, so a house line seems dangerous as she is the age she might yank it’s trip herself. Is it super detrimental for me not using one in the weeks before he can go outside leashed after all his vaccines are done by 16ish weeks? I put a leash on him in the car with his harness.
My 9 week old is raw fed I’m having trb finding a high reward treat
Just got me “Shorkie” pup and I found some very useful tips I can use when training him. Thanks ! ☺️
I have a ten year old shorkie they're great and so easy to train
How did you guys potty train them? I have an 8 week Shorkie puppy and I’m having a hard time.
@@carmenrivera9959 consistency, if you feed him at the same times and keep track of when they get a drink they'll tend to go go around the same time, so if he makes a mess 30 minutes after he eats every time it's best to take them out 20-25 minutes after they eat to be ready for it. My shorkie is highly motivated by food and praise so it's also good to find how which reward they respond best to for when they go where you want
MatEGS the issue that I’m having is that I will take him out and I’ll be outside for 20-25 mins and he doesn’t do his business but as soon as he comes in he goes to the bathroom and I’m not sure why
MatEGS but I do appreciate your response and I’ll try to get him on a schedule!
For how long is it a good idea to do this type of exercises with the new puppy?
Thankyou for reminding folks NOT to put verbal language in too soon or repeat. It’s my biggest challenge as a dog trainer to get through to my pet parents. They always want to go too fast and too soon. Love your videos always great explanations and breakdowns.
Such a cute puppy! You mentioned that she eats raw food, we also feed our puppy that but use kibble for training (especially when we are out and about). I've noticed that we go through A LOT of kibble so at this point she actually eats more kibble than raw. I'm confident that our kibble is good quality and appropriate for puppies, but it would be nice to feed her more of the raw stuff. Do you (or Mark) have any tips on how to do this?
Hi there, Emma! Rev is adorable, isn't she? Mark will use some homemade treats for her. Not specifically made from the same raw food that he feeds her for her meals. He will use these training treats for some of her training sessions (they're made with tuna): czcams.com/video/5rVgHLnt4W0/video.html
Happy Training, and Thanks for watching! ~Ken
@@McCannDogs Thanks! Our puppy loves tuna so that would be a great, high value reward for her. I'll be sure to make some!
I use freeze dried raw treats, I’ve got a variety of meats from lamb, goat, tripe, venison, turkey, minnows, salmon, and rabbit. They have lots of freeze dried options.
My pomchi pup is 8 weeks & weve been trying to teach her basic tips from around 6 weeks of age (She's my dogs puppy). She learnt sit & almost do paw!! She'd so smart like her mumma
I have taught my puppy word pottie and she goes pottie had her for four days now she learned it by day 3 she is 9 weeks old she pottie out side 1st day I did training on puppy pads all out side after that and with only once in middle night mid morning go out to pottie back to bed she has also learned word bed for her crate she goes in all by her self day one I was surprised on that one begale blue healer mix she is smart but wines lot if she in living room I go pottie she not even in bed crate bed she good girl I'm proud
Question-- our little puppy lunges at the food with sharp teeth, and pulling away and saying ouch doesn't seem to calm him down when we try again right away... tips?
Hi Mark, we're getting a puppy in a few weeks, she'll be 8 weeks by then. I'd like to start feeding her raw , but have no idea how to go about it. We live on Maui and have some hunter friends as a source of deer meat. Any suggestions or advice?
What treats are those?
can i train with leash to my 7weeks old puppy ? Is he still young ?
help my puppy is a 7 in a half week old germen shepherd keeps biting me and it hurts and she has chew toys but does not mind them and when we give her chew toys by hand she just gets our hand.
I just got a eight-week-old Frenchie 3 weeks ago and I've been doing so much educational work on how to be a good pet owner and have a nice happy healthy puppy and every video I come across they talk about the leisha line but what you all feel to talk about is how the puppy gets himself wrapped up in that leash line around corners of the couch or TV stands or table chairs I have caught my puppy three times in front of me wrap himself around and if I was not there he would have died
I kinda want to know about Raw feeding. I'm about to get a new puppy in a week and I have 2 other dogs that I want to get away from kibble
Our new puppy (8 weeks old) is way too hyperactive and nipping all the time. I cannot train him until his not calm. Any tips?
What do I do if my dog is to small to put a leash on? She’s a 8 week old Teacup Yorkie puppy and she loved to play but she can’t bark yet and has no teeth
I have a physical disability and with having to hold onto my walking aid I am finding it difficult to do the leash line. My puppy is just 8 weeks. Could you use something like a hands free leash
in the hand feeding bit, how long do you actually hand feed your puppy? And should you do this all the time during feeding or should it be a once a day as a training exercise?
Hi there! You font need to do it for long. Just for the first couple of weeks, hand feed a few times. Not even at every meal. Just feed by hand at random meals. It’s a great way to reinforce the fact that good things come through you! Happy Training ~Ken
McCann Dog Training thank you for everything!
Hi
Hi there, Alina! Thanks for watching! ~Ken
3:38 here pup-pup instead of name if playing or just something with now expectations
I’m think I’m ready for Simba. I will have my shitz tzu January 6 he will 8 weeks. Watching so many videos I think I’m ready 😂 🤦🏾♀️
I'm going to get the same kind of dog 😂
What are you feeding her?
I think you should do a video with your instructor (Julie) and her mixed breed rescue dog that you recently posted on Instagram. You could talk about things that are the same and things that are different with a rescue dog. I love your channel and I find it really useful but I notice that you do a lot of videos with really young puppies from breeders. I think a video explaining how to deal with quirks or bad experiences in their past life would be really useful. I know for me, when I brought home my 6 month old rescue pup last fall, I was overwhelmed because she seemed so set in her ways and very few youtube videos addressed that.
I realize now that a lot of the videos apply to dogs of any age, but I just don't think that new rescue dog owners understand that at first.
Hi there, Malinda! I think that’s a great idea. We intentionally publish mostly puppy content in our pre-recorded videos. In a lot of cases the same skills and exercises can be done with a dog of any age! With some older dogs however, great care needs to be taken to identify and address previous experiences and root causes for behavior. It’s a little more dynamic of a process. Which is really difficult to simulate in a one-directional experience like CZcams. As an informational channel, we always try to provide as much value as possible in each video, because we know how busy a dog and puppy owner can be. I think we could probably put together some foundational information for every new dog owner who has a rescue or rehomed dog. I do worry a little that people will underestimate their own dog’s specific needs though. If all dog owners were as invested as you are, Malinda, I would be a little more comfortable sharing more of the adult dog content. I really worry about some of the channels sharing dog aggressive (or people aggressive) “informational” content. It’s just not fair to the dogs. People of all levels of experience have access to CZcams and we both know that it takes a keen eye and a truly invested dog owner to commit the time, energy and resources to make sure their dog is as happy and comfortable as possible in their new homes.
I will definitely talk to Julie and see if we can come up with a lesson plan for a video about bringing home an adult dog. A lot of it comes down to management, training, clarity and consistency (applied in different amounts depending on each dog 😉) Thanks for watching and love all of your questions! ~Ken
Great tips! What kind of treats are best to use for a new puppy ??
Great video! My puppy is 8 weeks, and she responds well to training, even at this age, she is getting better at being outdoors, but its winter and I live in Alaska (she has a little doggie sweater to keep her warm) it's often a struggle to keep her outside for more than a potty break, and I need her to understand snow and be okay with being outside in it. I am concerned I am not getting her excercised enough outdoors therefore she can be over excitable indoors. How can I help her feel safer about going outside with me and that it can be fun? I've uses some treat and toy rewards but we cant seem to expand that threshold beyond 5 minutes before she begins to cry and run towards the front door. I appreciate your time, you guys are great!!!👍
Hey I was wondering how much should u walk an 8 week old puppy
The vets say to wait till they have all shots. I have a 7 week puppy and take him to a neighbors yard where there is no dogs or pets that go through there and he typically runs around and tires himself out in like 30 min. I would say maybe just keep leash on so he's used to having it on him and make sure he puts nothing in his mouth. but from what vets told me cannot take him on walks yet unless you know for sure no other animals have been around.
Amazing work
So what do you do when the puppy is very seldom motivated by the food?
Change the food type, it has preferences
how many times do we have to feed an 8 week pup??
It's writen on the food label
i wish you lived in scotland, i need help with my border collie she turned 10 weeks on monday i got her at 9 weeks old. i've only had her a week and she is starting to learn but she gets very bored so quickly! she is not my first border collie. i have another one who is nearly 15 years old in october. i forgot how hard it is raising puppies lol.
Hi there, Glitter Bug! Yes, puppy ownership is a lot of work for sure! We do have lots of trick training videos that you will find helpful. Along with obedience training, trick training is a great way to burn off some of that energy and teach your puppy that you are worth listening to! Spending short sessions, with lots of focus and intensity will be helpful to “take the edge off” of your energetic BC puppy😉 Happy Training! ~Ken
@@McCannDogs she can't go out for walks yet which is why she gets so bored so easy as she isn't allowed. so i'm trying my best to keep her busy inside unless it's a nice day we can go in the garden. she is getting her second lot of jabs on monday!
What is the best way to get your puppy used to a collar? Our 8 week old lab is not a fan and gets agitated when wearing one.
Thanks, your videos are great!
Hi there, Laura! That’s pretty common. It’s like wearing a new pair of glasses. It feels different and he’s probably forever scratching at it. It is important that he’s wearing it though, so having him focus on other things is helpful while he adjusts. Here’s the link to a video with some things you can work on with him while he adjusts: First Week Puppy Training - The 6 Skills To Teach First - czcams.com/video/_xvgo1-SUu0/video.html
Congratulations on your new four-legged family member. And Happy Training ~Ken
@@McCannDogs Thanks!
Ahh I wish I saw this video 2 weeks ago when I got my puppy at 8 weeks. Is there still hope to start these training techniques now that he's had a taste of reckless 'freedom'?
Such a great question, Chitra P! Yes, if you start applying these tips to a dog of any age, you will soon begin to see the benefit. Especially when it comes to their listening skills. Management and training are always a good combination to both prevent and avoid any issues in your home with your puppy. More importantly it sets them up to learn things faster in the future! Thanks for watching! ~Ken
my mums dog is 9 weeks old and hes scared of his collar.. i need help
I just got a puppy and she didn’t like her collar and also it made me nervous that she would get out of it. So I got a little harness that goes at the shoulders and u get the chest. It’s comfortable for pup and more secure.
What do you feel about long term confinements for puppies, and what would you leave in them? (Toys, potty, bed, etc)
Hi there! Using a crate is an option for short periods of time if you aren’t able to supervise them. Here is a link to our crate training playlist that will help you through the process: How To Crate Train A Puppy czcams.com/play/PL7BBgLulhern5Nb8E0alfaTgCLPKYVk3_.html

@@McCannDogs what would you do for longer periods such as 4 hours or more?
@@Daddymerls Probaby still the crate but make sure to put some toys they have to work for in the crate (e.g kong toys, treat games etc.)
So when adding value to my dogs name and not calling him by his name when not in training when can I call him by his name in the house?
When you have a reward you can call him
7:25 dog has an attention of about 6”
You mentioned you feed your dog raw meat my vet says not to feed him nothing Raw they're really trying to push the product they got so what is a good meal for my puppy
Mine was scared of the dark so I taught him to stay and obey me
So I have been searching, but cannot find a video helping with a super timid puppy. He is scared of everything, which makes training virtually impossible.. he runs from treats or commands. Slowly but surly he has gotten to concept of going outside but at 4 months I still have to go out with him, and watch for signs like a bran new puppy. if you put him out back he will sit next to the door and cry ... I’m so sad I don’t no what to do with him or why he is like this.. please help
Have you managed to get some good advice from someone? How is your puppy now?
I’m not sure but make sure you aren’t constantly by him because that causes separation anxiety and then he’ll expect you to be next to him. You need to make sure he gets used to being independent when alone.
Mine stays up all night crying I can’t sleep omg help me
Do I need to literally take her on an hour walk everyday before bed time ? I put a pad in cage with bed
How do I train my dog to eat calmly and not as if hasn’t eaten for a whole day!? He gobbles up his food and puppy dog milk like he has been starved!! Is there even such a thing as training your puppy how to eat?
I need help I kind of panic when my puppy won’t stop barking and whining. I’m not sure how to handle it cause my grandma will “feel bad” and start giving him attention every time he whines
Little puppies need attention all the time, unless they’re sleeping. There’s no way around it. That’s what you signed up for by getting a puppy.
I could be getting a puppy in the next 6 to 8 weeks depending how much money they are :)
Did you ever get your puppy
Merci Trent oh yea lol my aunts dog had puppies
What breed
Merci Trent mountain cur
My puppy keeps biting my fingers 24/7 im bleeding all over
which breed is she???
It’s weird how he calls living beings ‘’brand new’’. “Look, honey. We have a brand new baby!”
Great video! What kind of dog is this?
Looks to be a border collie mix! I could be wrong though, my apologies
It says it in the description, it's a sheltie (or Shetland Sheepdog)
What if the dog is too small for a collar or harness! Lol
Good question, Anna Banana! We’ve had some of the tiniest breeds in class including Teacup Chihuahua’s. Some people would use a kitten collar or a special order harness. They are pretty little, but having control of your tiny puppy is even more important when they’re that small! Happy Training! ~Ken
McCann Dog Training I got a cat harness for him put I think I’m just going to block off the kitchen/living room so I have eyes on him. I also have a toddler so it’s hard but I’m doing it lol
8week old puppies are like having a 1month of baby. Dont expect too much. They may bark all night , etc.
My dog has no interest in treats or using his meals to train
Try tiny bits of aromatic cheese.

Hi I'm 11 and just got my birthday gift MY Samiyod AND PS5 AND A LAMBOOOOOOOOO!!! WOHOO hate the lambo tho..I wanted a white one..
I'm going to get my new puppy, Manu, in around five hours. He's a 7 week old male sheltie pup! I already have a 7 years old sheltie female, Xia, and 4 years old whippet male, Paavo!
I've spent this whole day cleaning up the house and making everything ready for my special little guy! We live in the middle of nowhere, on a small farm, and I'm the one who owns the dogs, takes care of them etc.
I've only grown one dog from pup, Paavo, since I got Xia when she was 4, she wasn't fit to live in the city. Oh and they also have an instagram if you want to see them!! @pack.of.cuties
Don't understand the need of a long line. Allow them to be free roaming in the home and secure garden.
