  • Hand-made cu mai chef knife.
This video shows how I made a wedding cake knife, which can also be used as a chef's knife.
The blade is made of cu mai which is three layers of steel with copper in between. For the handle, I used a piece of dyed maple burl.
At the end of the video, I have included a few shots of a bread knife, made with similar materials. This time, however, I used nickel in the blade and sterling silver in the bolster as it was a gift for a silver wedding anniversary.

I was just thinking about how it took so long to make things like swords back in the day, you had to hammer out massive billets by a sledge hammer for weeks and with out the use of power tools and reminded me how this kind of stuff was made when I saw you hammer by hand

What steel, and in what thickness for both d did you use? I'm planning on doing a cu-mai chefs knife as well, but am not sure what stock to start with.

I used 6mm thick 1080 for the side and core, for the copper I used a few pieces of 1mm thick scrap pipe. If you are planning on forging it by hand then I would suggest using thinner stock.
You want your core and cladding to be a lot thicker than your copper, otherwise the copper streak will be too thick.
Hope this is helpful, let me know if you have anymore questions.

Knife, nice, video work, nice...but I despise videos where you have to crank the volume to hear someone speak and then get your ears blown off by stupidly loud music. Tone the music volume down and you'd have a great video.

Thank you for the advice, I will be sure to do that in future videos.
