Yes
How exactly do you know when it's boiling? I can't tell from the steam on the lid without lifting it. My first try a layer of rice stuck to the bottom and burned a little. Is it because I didn't wash the rice because I couldn't be bothered or I lost the boil at some point? I lifted it a little at the start to see if it was boiling. I even shook the pot a few times to move the rice (took it off the heat) but at about the fifth minute it wouldn't move

I don’t know about cardamom but I would recommend you to buy star anise, you can find it in any supermarket and it’s a nice addition to a big variety of dishes
If you like massala chai you can make it at home with a few spices, it's the reason I have cardamon and cloves

A small tip from an Asian boy cooking rice for nearly 20 years: when your rice cooker changes from "cook" to "warm", pull out the plug and wait for 10-15'. Don't open the lid. By doing that, the rice is cooler (more edible) and not stick to pot (important!)

Today its mother's day, and i decided to make rice for the first time. I cook a lot, but i have never made rice before. I make rice Gordon Ramsay style, with shrimps, onions, carrots and some red pepers. My mom literally cried after the first bite, she was astonished, and i was really freaking happy and grateful. Thank you Gordon, you are definately an inspiration to me. Greetings from Chile, and again, thank you.
Ulises Bustos d you mind giving me the recipe? :( pls also for mom's day.
13jeac it isn't hard mate... First I make the rice. The most important thing it's put the rice under water and clean it for a couple of minutes (use one of that recipient with holes, I'm not English native speaker). Then you need to boil water. Two cups of water for one cup of rice. After boiling, put rice with salt and pepper and let it cook with low fire and a toaster (for kitchen) for twenty minutes. So, fire, toaster, rice. For the sauce just cook the shrimps or any meat you want for a couple of minutes, then add vegetables, any one you like. Pepper's, onion, garlic, etc. After everything is cooked add salt, pepper, and any other seasoning you like. Try to make the plate look beautiful for you mom and good luck!
Thanks, I was searching other recipe but I trust u, my mom is coming today at 2, and hope I can make it as great as yours, thnx again dude.
Was she crying cause the food astonished her or because it was so bad?

For us asians, we tend to use jasmine rice, which is generally steamed in a rice cooker, and it is common in southeast and east asian countries.

Gordon: Now most people, when they boil water think....boiling water. WROONG!
You wanna flavor it up. Otherwise its just too plain. First, take 2 cups of water into your pot, and you're gonna wanna squeeze the juice of HALF a lemon into it. And let the seeds sit in there. You're gonna take those out when you're through. For now let them simmer.
Next we add a bit of Okra. But its important that you slice and shave it. So its not so slimey in the end result. Some people like the texture. And in certain dishes its quite good. But for boiling water. Its a bit much.
Now what you're gonna do after letting your pot reach boiling point is you're gonna scoop out those seeds. But don't throw em away. You're gonna wanna take em while they're still nice and hot, and shove em firmly up your nose, ears, and arsehole. You want EVERY ORFICE FILLED. No holes left besides your mouth. You're gonna eat those later.
And once you're fully engulfed by the odorous stench of your own burnt bum getting past your clogged up nostrils, the water is ready.
You're gonna take that pot, and turn it....riiight over your own fuckin head cus I'm the cook, what I say goes. And you're a bleeding lil cocksucker who deserves this. And that my friends. Is how you boil a bastard.

I made it according to his recipe, best rice I ever ate. ❤
At least he washes the rice first, not after its cooked
It adds water. 1:1 isn't enough on its own. Also, traditionally the water ratio changed with the season. The rice would dry in the months after harvest requiring more water.
I've been making rice for years. Don't wash rice. Use a little less than 2:1 water. Bring to boil. Reduce heat. Steam for 18 minutes with lid on. (Don't lift lid.) Rise is done. The reason to not wash the rice is that the rice company sprinkles the rice with vitamins. Washing washes off the vitamins. Of course the rice turns out gloopy. But I like gloopy rice.

I'm Puertorican and we make the white rice very different. We do use 1 part to 1 1/2. (example: 1 cup rice to 1 1/2 cup water) but first we put 2 tablespoon of oil (canola, corn or vegetable) that is so the rice dont stick to the pan, salt till the water taste a lil salty (not much) and when the water is boiling we put the rice. Leave it open on high till is almost dry and then lower the temp to low, turn it and cover completely till is cooked. But I'm going to try this and see how it taste!
Basmati is real real rice that has to be washed and soaked.. Everyone has there own method of cooking the rice.. Like he said king of all rices... I buy the 10 to 15 pound bag..
I'm Puerto Rican and we do that too. Lol
@Amazing Me: It's all "real" rice you moron. Which one's better is a matter of preference. At the end of the day this is just fucking rice, a dime a dozen a fucking bag. Moron.
I'm jamaican and that's exactly how I cook my basmati rice, I use olive oil instead and let it steam for exactly 15mins. When I cook rice it's always so shelly and fluffy😋
I just made rice for the first time and followed this and it was delicious😋 However it was just for me and I made 400g so I've got loads leftover lol
Thank you Gordon! Never cooked rice perfectly until this video!😊
I rewatch this video everytime I make basmati rice. Comes out perfectly every time!
I'm Chinese, and the rice I eat and is served in authentic restaurants have no oil, zero seasoning, and no spices period.
Thats great. Is that authentic restaurant a 3 star restaurant serving 50 dollar meals? Probably not. Rice in most asian restaurants is plain fluffy white rice. Theres nothing wrong with that - its perfectly fine that way. Doesnt mean it cant be made into something with a more complex flavor. Also, other continents have rice too, not just Asia.
SuWoopSparrow I understand what you mean :P But what I'm saying is, authentic Chinese rice is eaten the way it is, you don't have to add all this stuff to try and fancy it up. I am only talking about Chinese rice btw, cause I'm not familiar with other cuisines that eat rice. You can see that I did that in my original comment as well
No you dont. But its not everyday food. Its special occasion food. Well, in this case, the rice additions are so simply you can easily do it everyday, but my point is that most top of the line cooking can be done simpler and easier. And as I said, other continents have their own rice dishes. To them, a seasoned rice is authentic. Besides, calling plain rice authentic is strange because its just rice. Its like telling someone to not eat a chocolate covered strawberry because a regular plain strawberry is authentic.
SuWoopSparrow I'm sure this applies to all continents who eat rice, but isn't it something that is eaten everyday? It's not exactly special occasion food. Anyhow, this is going nowhere so I won't be replying after my comment
Chinese traditionally prefer their rice without oil or seasoning. It's an ethnic thing. This basmati rice is prepared pretty much exactly the same way just about every Indian restaurant serves theirs.
I re watch this every time I make rice
guys, calm down, it is basmati rice, its cooking way is different from our short grain rice, at first I didn't notice and thought gordon did it wrong, but now I rewatched it and he is actually right
