    Maybe if they stop suffocating the city & building on every spare MM of land the cities infrastructure could handle these events ? New Zealand 🇳🇿 needs to grow & and develop, but not all in one city ,we have a beautiful country to share & grow ❤️🇳🇿

      yeap the concrete jungle,the only way to stop the floods is to build a huge waste water system as big as the city under the city (that is what Tokyo japan has done...they no have no floods but cost a billion $$ to build) Also stop using the farm land and flood plans to build poor quality new homes on, there is no where the water can go or soak into anymore, its not like Auckland has huge cannels for storm water to go..we are lacking in instructor (where are the pump stations in the low areas aswell) come on Auckland council you get paid enough, time to do some work ae ae

      Now those LIM reports have been updated and on top of the damage to those properties, the change to the LIM means the property has lost value.

Ive seen volenteering groups going around cleaning the rivers and streams, where as the council have gardening labourers monthly potting expensive plants around the west. Takes two to tango. The city provided permits for houses on a flood plain. (This happens all over the world) The home owners didn't think about whether theses homes were at a low point or not. They assumed that because the city had allowed them to be built that the houses were located in an appropriate are. The fact is, that you can build in a flood plain IF you take into account that it WILL flood, and build the building with that in mind. So build it above flood level on pilings. I live on a street where more than 20 new houses has been built in the pass 3 years: no only more car parked on the street because they are tiny and have only 1 carpark, the important thing is no any drainage pipe update has been done on the street... more than 20 houses are more than 40 toilet and showers more+the extreme rain... Stonefield is was the exception, because they built a neighborhood and did the properly... but build houses as mushrooms without update de infrastructure is the perfect recipe for this flooding situation.

    It’s only been a matter of months since the last flood event in Auckland.. we get a significant event at least once a year so why the panic. Anyone remember the water shortage years a couple of years back. The gent in charge of Watercare said at the time Auckland relies on rainfall to keep the dams full. Hello.. isn’t that what happened. The issue is bigger than just one local government.. Auckland’s population has doubled in the last 35 years. Subdivisions and infill housing have sprung up where the risk of storm water damage was minimized or overlooked. So here we are.. build in a floodplain and you will get flooded sooner or later.

    I don’t get how one person can be blamed for a natural disaster? No one was prepared for this, as much as no one would be prepared if a new volcano erupted and formed in the middle of the city. We just have to get on with it and and get thru it and be prepared for the future. One person cannot have all the answers to something no one saw coming whether your a mayor or the king of England or Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson. Come on

      Not really. There were clear signs that something was very wrong as early as 6am on Friday. Some saw (like myself) and others were completely in their own world and shrugged it off. I actually feared for my life on my drive home and warned my family. Nowadays, it's completely up to people if they want to rely on the authorities because they won't bat an eye when thousands of people get stranded at a cancelled Elton John concert.

    99% of Auckland is unaffected. Which means that the drainage network saved 99% of Auckland. Considering the upgrades and ongoing work going into stormwater and wastewater it's a pretty good result that only 1% of homes affected . And the majority of that 1% are minor water damage . The media including social media blow it all out of proportion

    • @hjm2062
      @hjm2062 Před rokem +1

    Way to misrepresent the Mayor yet again, folks. When he said 'some of those houses shouldn't have been where they are' he wasn't referring to Debbie's bit of suburbia. He was talking about the cliff-top ones that are now teetering on the edge. He was absolutely right on that point.

      What kind of logic is that? The bus driver could've easily just stop driving and say "Welp, see ya later suckers" and ran away to save himself but no, he just kept driving to a point where people can safely get off the bus.

    • @nataliechilds4259
      @nataliechilds4259 Před rokem +2

      @@tanedunn3607 this wasn't a flash flood like Friday where all were caught off guard with no solid alerts and warnings as is now. You see a heavily flooded street with a car already submerged most of the way, you don't proceed. Of course, only the driver and passengers can speak from a witness' perspective and I hope we get to hear their side.
