Big lesson - only call real decisive victories that have been thought out a decisive victory. Don’t call a tactical win a decisive victory. Think long term

Martial arts in a studio or tournament is much different than real life. You can get killed on the street. You get a decisive victory in real life, you "escalate the conflict." Totally agree. You said it as I was typing. Great points. Totally agree. VERY IMPORTANT TOPIC. Remember someone you've submitted on the street can always come back with a gun when you least expect it. in relationships never a good tactic if you want to stay in that relationship (GF, wife, BF, husband, child, etc.).

Good philosophy. In Improv they have a technique referred to as "yes and" as a preface before expressing your next thought. It helps to prevent negation & both sides winning. It's difficult sometimes to always use it in life but something good to keep in mind when you find yourself negating too much something I can be guilty of. And yes the Ego needs to be balanced. It helps one believe they can do anything/reach any goal yet it does need to be reigned in when it goes berserk...lol..............thanks.

I want to add some nuance from apersonal experienceon this. Last BJJ tournament I did I got 12 points ahead, and I went for some submission attempts but did not overcommit as to keep my positional advantage. But in the last 20 seconds my opponent was able to create a scramble and stand up. With mere seconds left on the clock he went for a hailmary leglock attemp and was able to tap me with 3 seconds left on the clock with a heelhook. He went for the total victory, surprised me and got it.

I like the idea of a clinical victory. If you can win a decisive victory just doing your thing then just keep going. If you have to change what has lead to your current success then you may be overreaching.
Ties in pretty well to the MMA analogy too.

hm. I CHOOSE to win small battles, everyday. Might be one, might be 100. Differs daily.
Sometime, that battle can even be against myself.
Small battles, every day, build up. It's not "decisive victory", and it's not "scorched earth", it's small wins, over time.
    Maybe it's just maturity.
I don't want to "take the hill"
I don't want to have a "Pyhirric victory"
I CHOOSE to use my skills, intelligence, and resources WISELY to move myself and my tribe to the next day.
I don't want to "beat" anyone, i want to be left alone...and when i do have to stand up, i want to see clearly and use experience and intellignece to make good decisions to take that small win.
"the enemy always thinks it's about them...and THAT is how they lose.....it's NOT ...never was.

Use what's useful. Just the concept of "extreme ownership", is good when viewed epistemologically. Like, what does "Extreme Ownership" mean in the context of your daily life, at work, with friends, with family? Do you own your share of your relationships? What are the boundaries where you don't, can't, or where it may be inadvisable to take ownership? Do you recieve criticism? Do you make adjustments, is it fair? It's funny though, you can definitely take a little advice, run out in the world and get your ass kicked. It's motivational and ethical philosophy. I've seen inklings of dialectic with David Burke. Sometimes with EC as well. Personally, I favor Burke a little bit, but I'm not listening to Jocko to learn how to think/dialog through a technical problem. I'm listening in part for motivation (definitely a good source, but see "every body on Everest was once a highly motivated mountain climber") and in part to understand his thought process.

Do you know what the scientific name for fools gold is?

It looks like gold, it's shiny and yellow but it's only a relatively common iron compound, hardly less common than rust.
A phyric victory is all about strategy, after all, it IS a victory, but what makes it so?
Perhaps the aim was accomplished at too high a price? Perhaps winning THAT battle left you terribly out of position for the next...perhaps the win ate up too many resources.
All great generals know their is a critical and undeniable difference between tactics and strategy.
A general with a good strategy but poor tactics will lose most his battles and still win the war.
Another general might be a brilliant tactician but without strategic vision he will win battle after battle until he abruptly and inexplicably loses the war.

Decisive is actually a bad word for what he really means to say
Decisive means there's no doubt about who won but most military commanders use it in the sense that it means the initiative or the tide of the war has changed.
The Japanese were ever seeking the decisive action with the US navy, they never had many victories against that navy. None after early in '43...and they certainly never had any victories that gave them uninterrupted initiative as the Americans had after Midway. Perhaps the most decisive and initiative changing conflict in warfare.
Kursk possibly...if the Germans had won...I think it would have just prolonged the war. But losing that battle, and losing so many irreplaceable tanks and officers, it was too hard a blow
