Back then, Disney wasn't scared to take risks. In terms of Disney's characterization of Frollo, Don Hahn, the producer of Hunchback (who also produced Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Atlantis) said that Frollo was based on Ralph Fiennes' portrayal of Amon Goeth in Schindler's List. Keep in mind that Goeth was a real person. As commandant of the Krakow concentration camp, he hated Jews in the same manner that Frollo hated the Romani people. A genocidal sadist who had a Jewish maid he routinely abused while harboring feelings for her. Just like how Frollo was hellbent on exterminating the Romani people but finds himself lusting after Esmeralda. It's one of those compelling stories that holds up and withstands the test of time.

The answer to the riddle "who is the monster and who is the man" seems to be completely self-evident by the end the prologue - but it's actually much more layered. Of course Frollo is the monster - morally speaking. But Quasimodo is also the monster - he is Frollo's monster.
Really, there is no fixed definition for what a monster is - it could be anything, and it could look like anything. At its core, a "monster" is something uncanny and threatening. The monster unsettles the beholder because it's something they simply can't define, something that threatens their view of the world, something simultaneously familiar and unfamiliar. Because what makes the monster so uniquely frightening is that it reflects a suppressed aspect of the beholder's personality. Something about themselves that they're unwilling to deal with, that they can't control - and so they project it onto something external, something they can then blame for their problem.
Quasimodo is Frollo's monster - he is physically uncanny to him because he is descended from the gypsies (whom Frollo fears and despises) and is deformed in a way Frollo associates with the devil. He is also uncanny to him because he reflects Frollo's guilt complex. He is the living embodiment of that moment when Frollo killed an innocent woman and tried to drown her child. So he projects his guilt, his self-loathing onto Quasimodo. "You are deformed, and you are ugly." What Frollo really means is that he _himself_ is deformed. He himself is ugly. But that's the part of himself he is terrified of confronting.
Ironically, Frollo dies as he tries to kill Quasimodo - he tries to slay the monster, _his_ monster - and thereby slays himself. Because the monstrosity he sees in Quasimodo comes back to him, it's his own monstrosity.
None of this, of course, is remotely tied to who Quasimodo is as an individual. In fact, anyone or anything could be "the monster," depending on their position in the story. The question isn't who or what the monster is - but who the one observing them is.

      @leirawhitehart1236 Před rokem +15

An interesting take, though I will say one thing about it that doesn't really affect your analysis.
I don't think Quasimodo actually is descended from the gypsies, at least biologically.
Like, if you look at his parents, and you look at him, it's clear they look nothing alike, his obvious deformities aside, as he is a pale redhead, and they both have brown skin and black hair, and so I think the logical thing to conclude is that Quasimodo wasn't their biological son either.
However, I do have this theory that has no real basis, but was always kinda my assumption based on the information given in the movie.
So my theory is, when Quasimodo was born, he was abandoned by his birth parents due to his deformities, and they decided to place him somewhere, where the gypsies later found him and decided to take pity on him, and raise him as their own.
Why were they trying to get into Paris? Probably for a better life for him or something, idk.
But yeah, that's just my own speculation and has nothing really to do with your analysis, but is something I'd like to point out anyway as a likelihood.

I can HIGHLY recommend the stage musical-version of it. Not being hindered by the fanily friendliness I think it's closer to the darker vision. Best example being the gargoyles that are a choir and not specific characters. And they are a lot darker...
    Frollo:
"You don't want to hurt me Quasimodo."
The Gargoyles whispering in Quasimodo's ear:
    "Yes, you do..."

I honestly didn’t care for the Hugo novel and found it to be kind of boring. Which in turn is why I’m not a fan of the American Disney stage musical and find it to be highly overrated.
Quasimodo and Esmeralda aren’t very likable in the American Disney stage musical so when they died I simply did not care or feel anything. The choir narrating everything really got on my nerves. Flight Into Egypt is boring, lame and forgettable. Say what you want about A Guy Like You but it’s a least memorable.
Disney actually did a stage adaptation in Berlin from 1999-2002. It’s a bit closer to the movie story wise but borrows some elements from the Hugo novel A.K.A the good aspects and ideas. The Gargoyles humor is toned down and confirmed to be In Quasimodo’s imagination. Esmeralda actually dies in this. But unlike the American version and the Hugo novel, it’s handled far better and she’s a more likable character. czcams.com/video/xP8cM6QRkA4/video.html

There is a reason why I focused my last college paper entirely on this movie, and it goes all the way back to a 6-year-old who thought she knew all the Disney movies. I was literally just watching a compilation of Disney villain defeats on my brother’s computer-and then I see something that actually makes me go “That’s not Disney. It has to be Don Bluth or something.” It was like seeing that creepy firefighter clown from the Brave Little Toaster-only this man was dressed in black. I thought he was just some evil sorcerer from a fantasy movie like the Black Cauldron, but then I look up Frollo’s name and see a *completely different person* . It blew my mind as a kid and it sparked a hyper-fixation that just comes and goes throughout the years. This movie and especially its villain ruined my standards for animated movies for sure, even if the Prince of Egypt is objectively perfect. Sorry for the rambling I’m just still so passionate. 😂

This and Prince of the Egypt are my favorite American animated films and have set the standard for me. No other cartoon movies from the USA come close to the bar these 2 had. I'm sad that they're the exceptions and not the standard that American animated movies aim for. Really wish that Western animation can learn from anime in normalizing mature and dark stories instead of limiting the medium in general to typical children's movies.
That said, I personally only rate PoE slightly higher because the gargoyle scenes were dumb and Frollo appears too much like a stereotypical 1-dimensional villain for someone who's supposed to be just a human with the wrong beliefs. Frollo is my favorite Disney villain for actually being human and complex. He believes what he's doing is right, for the good of Paris and for God. It'll help a lot with his depth if he doesn't always have this evil expression/attitude like a generic villain. His motivation and complexity as a villain is akin to Ramses in Prince of Egypt, but his presentation is akin to the pure evil villains like Jafar and Scar. Mother Gothel is the exact opposite, where she has 1-dimensional villain motivations but doesn't always appear evil like a realistic human being.

Hunchback seriously is one of Disney's most mature and realistic films I've ever seen. Like to the cold opening with Bells of Notre Dame to Frollo's villain song Hellfire and Quasimodo's arc throughout the film with his desire to be apart of the community. I honestly still believe that Out There is one of Disney's greatest protagonist "I Want" songs. I'm seriously praying that Disney doesn't try remaking this because it just wouldn't capture the dark tone and themes of the original again. I really love Esmerelda's song it beautifully captures how she has faith in God even though there is so much cruelty in the world. I think one of the coldest lines comes from the movie is in the opening song Bells Of Notre Dame "You can lie to yourself and your minions, you can claim you haven't a qualm, but you can never run nor hide what you've done from the eyes, the very eyes of Notre Dame" there's just something about the opening that leaves me in chills from the puppet of Quasimodo transitioning to him ringing the bells the choir buildup and score makes me wanna cry.

I find it odd that Walt Disney felt constrained by the family friendly parameters that were set around his movies. Reading the original Grimm Brothers fairy tales, or many of the other stories from the 19th century and before that were written for children, you'll see that many of them went very, very dark. He may not have done it single-handedly, but it seems as if Walt Disney himself played large part in the tonal shift to the lighter material that is now considered the standard for children's stories.

I think part of the problem may have had to do with how Fantasia flopped. He wanted that to be like "the next big thing" a leap forward, bringing together classical music and art, a higher level of sophistication than animation studios had put out. But it wasn't financially successful and the only thing that really helped the studio were the shorts and cheaper packaged films until Disneyland opened. Of course, that was mostly due to the war, but I think that really hindered him and his team from doing anything more "serious" and "sophisticated" again.

Now that’s a tonally inconsistent movie for ya. Batman The Animated Series, X-Men The Animated Series, Superman The Animated Series, Spider-Man The Animated Series, Justice League The Animated Series, Batman: Mask of The Phantasm, Gargoyles, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Nightmare Before Christmas, Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Corpse Bride are darker, more adult oriented, intense, sophisticated, and only have a few lighthearted moments here and there, right (Batman The Animated Series, X-Men The Animated Series, Superman The Animated Series, Spider-Man The Animated Series, Justice League The Animated Series, Batman: Mask of The Phantasm, Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Corpse Bride are not Disney, but you get the idea)? I guess they’re tonally inconsistent than. No because they only happen here and there and only last for like five to six minutes. Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame DOES THE EXACT SAME THING!!! So, the next time you say it’s “Durr tonally inconsistent” actually watch the damn movie next time. I know movies are subjective and if you didn’t care for the movie and it wasn’t your cup of tea than fine, and I have nothing against that. But to say this movie is tonally inconsistent? Although some parts of the movie are admittedly a bit weak, Esmeralda and Frollo HARD carry this film (Hellfire and God help the Outcasts being of course the best scenes in the movie and arguably contain some of the most complex lyrics in a Disney movie)

This is my favorite Disney movie, period. The second I saw Quasimodo in theaters as a nine-year-old girl back in 1996, I was like, "Him. He's my favorite, everyone else go home."
That opinion has never changed, and as I got older, I appreciated this movie more and more.
I also appreciate that you acknowledged that it's Hugo that really drags things down, and that Victor and Laverne actually serve a narrative purpose. Victor is a perfect personification of Quasimodo's anxiety, especially when it comes to Frollo, while Laverne is the kind parental figure he needs. Hugo...might be intrusive thoughts? That's my best guess, honestly, but he doesn't really do anything to serve the plot except help the others encourage Quasimodo to sneak out. After that, he's just a distraction from the rest of the movie.
I also feel that cutting Hugo out (or at least toning him down several notches - the part where he's playing cards with the birds, then using the cards to showcase how Esmeralda is ahead of Frollo *could* have worked if it stopped right there, and then transitioned to Esmeralda coming in as a sort of, "see? Told you" moment before the gargoyle trio become stone again) would improve the entire movie.
Also, I like "A Guy Like You" as a song, I just don't like it in context. I would *happily* cut it out of the movie, but still jam to it on the soundtrack, if that makes sense? It's not a bad song on its own, but it does NOT work in the movie itself.
Overall, though, I love everything about this movie from the story to the music to the characters. It's just a shame that the higher-ups had to meddle to make it more "kid friendly".

About the time when the Hunchback of Notre-Dame was released on 1996, Disney was kinda on its peak about darker fantasy stuff including the creation of the Gargoyles TV series to match the tune of WB DC Batman animated series. And overall the darker and serious fantasy trend has started since middle 80s about the time of The Black Cauldron and the Gummi Bears release on TV, and this element kept going on untill after The Hunchback faill on box-office, and then was when Disney stopped to be getting so edgy as then self-restricting itself. Still overall a somewhat wanning dark-themed style and focus remained on Disney even a while after the Huchback of Notre-Dame untill 2001 on Atlantis the Lost Empire being maybe the last with heavy plot elements for mature audiences. But yeah overall the peak of the best of what Disney could have acheived seriously on his animated movies happened with that movie.

Ah man, yeah, this is one of my favorites! Possibly would be #1, if not for those damn Gargoyles, especially Hugo! To no one's surprise, we would find out years later that the creatives behind the film were opposed to using the Gargoyles as comic relief, and were opposed to them having a song, with them merely serving as Quasi's inner monologue, and to further show us his isolation and loneliness (in other words, they would only be alive to him). Disney execs, however, forced in comic relief because of the success of Genie and Timon and Pumbaa, and because Disney almost chickened out on making Hunchback entirely. One thing I will give Don Bluth when he was at his best, he respected kids.

I'm sorry but I just never understand why people find Dory funny. I'm a fan of Ellen GeGeneres as an actress and I think she can be quite funny if you give her the right material (I hear she's an asshole in real life, but I don't know for sure so I can't comment). But sadly she wasn't given the right material. Not even Joan Rivers can make this role work. Maybe if she were written differently than Ellen could have been great.
Do I get the hate for the Gargoyles? Yes and no.
“They’re annoying, obnoxious, not funny, They’re too over the top, got on my nerves, they’re cringy, they’re not my cup of tea”. I obviously disagree but that’s perfectly understandable and I feel your pain despite disagreeing with you. That’s how I feel about Dory in Finding Nemo. I'm happy i didn't see the Hunchback in 1996 when i was 13, instead, i saw it in 2006, when i could understand the story and the motives behind the character's actions. It sounds strange for me to admit it now, but i fell in love with Frollo! I was literally obsessed to the point i started wearing long black dresses with a purple scarf round my neck. (I'm glad i didn't also wear a hat).
The movie spoke to me in so many ways, i related to every one of the main characters: i felt misunderstood and imprisoned like Quasy, i was a strong advocate for social justice like Esme, and having just graduated Theology, i was very much at home around priests, archdeacons and bishops. I could also understand Frollo's inner conflict : piety/ sin, power/corruption, desire to do good without understanding that your idea of good was twisted by life of bitterness, resent, isolation, basically a life spent in a bubble that made you immune to any sign of affection.
I believe the real question of the movie is not "Who is the monster and who is the man", but, in fact "Who is the real prisoner who cannot escape?" The tragedy of Frollo is that his prison is built by himself stronger and more isolated every day.

It's true that "The Black Cauldron" doesn't have the same quality of animation or music that THoND does, but it is Disney's darkest and most rebellious movie. It was originally supposed to have an R rating for violence. However, the new boss at Disney (I can't remember which one it was) wanted it to be more family-friendly to fit with Disney's image. He personally cut around twelve minutes of the movie because the directors and producers dug their heels in. That's why the animation has a lower quality because the animators had to scramble to fill in the gaps he made.

I actually liked the gargoyles, if you were to assume that the gargoyles were the figments of Quasi's imaginations. Understandable too, since he's been isolated from the rest of the world for at least 2 decades (not sure how old he is).
But what really makes this movie great is the villain -- Frollo. He's such a "love to hate" character, and yet, so logically realistic character. And his own personal struggle is something that the audience can at least see (although not accept).
But let's talk about the heroine, Esmeralda. As far as I know, she's the only Disney female character who was genuinely good person with no selfish motives, fighting for those who were less fortunate (which is saying something, since she was a literal beggar). All other Disney characters, they had at least decent well being (at least middle class, by the world's standards). Too many were rich to begin with, and even the "less fortunate" never had to beg to have the next meal. Alone. For her entire life.

Fascinating Analysis of the Classic Disney animated movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame which is based on the Book of the same name. The characters have very different unique personalities

There is a little talked about point about this movie and about Disney's Frollo that I'm happy was talked about here. The fact that Disney's Judge Claude Frollo is FAR more evil than the Archdeacon in the novelization and theatrical productions of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "La Esmaralda".

I would NOT call The Lion King "light-hearted". I mean, it's plot is a Shakespearean murder-and-vengeance story! It's kind of dark when you think about it!

    • @Theravingranter

I feel like people take The Lion King for granted because it has Timon and Pumbaa, fart jokes, silly things and ideas, and air headed side characters( aside from Rafiki). The first half, before Mufasa dies feels so child friendly and happy then BOOM dead body, Simba crying out for help, Scars goons sent to kill him. Though it has a light hearted tone in some aspects there are so many deep dark elements at play and it was going to be darker!! Nala was meant to have a brother and he was going to be put in, what they called, a lion concentration camp and she would have to rescue him. This idea was scrapped for being wildly dark though hints of it remain, Scars hyenas doing the march is supposed to be a blatant reference to nazis. There’s an extremely dark theory that Scar ate Mufasa after he died or at least let his hyenas have him and if this is true then Scars end is fitting. It is one of the few movies we get to see a dead body for a long period of time and the child grieving, mourning, crying, going through every stage of denial. If that is light hearted then idk man.

Thank you for your views on this movie. I never catched Frollos redeeming-chances befor. Always glad to hear someones else reflectedopinion.
The latin choir orase in tge final and while Paris is burning "Kyrie Eleison" means "Good have Mercy witch ads another beautifull deep and also dark layer to the movie.
And the latin prase "Mea Cupla", meanin "My Fault"in the Hellfiresong sung by the red Robes, wich are very simmilar to the Inquisition could reflect Frollos conciouns and also the core of christian believe of Love, Mercy and compassion, wich call against frollos twiszed view of Christian believe from within his heart.

Disney made a musical out of this movie that's even more darker than the movie because it ends where Esmeralda dies.

Claude Frollo is the first animated villain I’ve ever seen that was so human in his evilness. An egotistical religious fanatic that doubled as an abuser, a genocidal racist, a monster, and even each of those negative traits had depth. Like his racism, specifically towards Esmeralda (a Brown woman) had was heavy on the sexual fetishism many women of color have been and are, I am certain, familiar with even today. Disney will NEVER allow themselves to be that daring again, especially now where almost every villain is actually secretly a budding hero that just needs a bit of petting and direction. (Eye roll) Disney villains of old, particularly Frollo, my all time favorite, Maleficent (and not that pathetic live action), Scar, Cinderella’s step mother and a few others were evil because they were nasty excuses for humans/living beings.

26:00-28:00 They could do a 2D/3D animated film with musical numbers for The Brothers Karamazov. That would be so awesome.

If i recall correctly the first bellringer of notre dame book, was about the church more than anything, and sparked the concept of monuments. it's moral was "good people, bad people, rich people, poor people. Notre Dame has seen them all and survived them.
