  • This video is a demonstration of the ideograph "Dance" (“舞”) in its semi-cursive style.
The lines are more soft, fluid and flow with a sense of joy and ease, just like a lady dancing under the morning sun.
The brush demo of its Cursive Style can be found here:

1978, i was a tourist (from Australia) in Kyoto on the national holiday, when i walked though a temple full of giant sheets of paper with with single Japanese characters painted on them. learned that it was a kids Calligraphy contest be judged but the head Temple priest for the most beautifully written letters.. It was so beautiful with all these long strings everywhere hanging these fluttering sheets. so wonderful and visual. went thorough sever rolls of film in one temple alone.. want to go back.

Hi Sandy, what a beautiful and imagery memory you have just shared.
I think you might have come across these traditional scrolls which have been used to display oriental brush painting. The scene sounds very peaceful, seren and sweet.

Hi Hoh Sorn. How lovely to see your words. Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity.
You are absolutely right - the brush movement can become like a flow of joy and happiness when the calligrapher embodied the quality. I believe I was enjoying the brush practice while I was brushing this ideograph.
Thank you again and yes, I will, keep on the practice.😊

Thank you Mary for your message. Yes you are absolutely right in the sense that this art practice itself is a demonstration of PEACE and HARMONY between the breath, body, mind and spirit.
The ideography that is demonstrated in this video is a relatively modern style - semi cursive. However, thousands of years ago when this ideography was first created it's more like a symbol or a picture, which you might be more easy to relate to. Here is the carved script of "Dance" (the link is a bit long lol):

舞 already means dance by itself. 跳 means jump. Together they mean dancing in the spoken language, but calligraphy rarely uses the spoken language. The tiào is unnecessary.

Calligraphy is based on older Classical/Literary Chinese, where one character representing a word is the norm.
