When it was a 2D or sprite based game, it held up well. When the PS1 showcased it's 3D abilities, the difference between the generations was definitely noticeable. Still, good showing for the Gensis.

What I have learnt from watching this great video is that the Genesis is mostly better than PS1 if the game was released on the Genesis. To me It looks like they were lazy in porting most of these older titles over to PS1. On fifa98 this was a very late game for the Mega drive/Genesis and we can see the PS1 is on another level here. so what i am thinking is it was probably cash in, make a quick buck, increase the amount of games on the PS1 etc mentality that caused these titles to be weaker on the PS1 i think the PS1 could easily do better.

Duke Nukem 3D is extremely impressive considering the limitations of the Sega Genesis, it's incredible that TecToy managed to do something like this without any additional chips, a pity that the game was only officially released in Brazil. From Tec Toy, Duke Nukem 3D on the Mega Drive is yet another underwhelming effort from them.
True and more valiant effort can be found in many more examples, from as early as 1991 in the form of Star Cruiser, even Steel Talons and specially the "F-" simulation games, all these actually feature real time polygons.
Check F-22 Interceptor - Advanced Tactical Fighter, F-117 Stealth - Operation - Night Storm , F-15 Strike Eagle II, F-117 Night Storm, F1 - World Championship Edition.
Duke 3D is a terrible example, actually, even Zero Tolerance is heads and shoulders above it in all aspects. I believe a decent version could be brought to the console just like a decent DOOM port was released on the SNES, but this one is as shameful as their Street Fighter 2 Master System, another early beta effort distributed as full-fledged games.
Tec Toy did a good job as SEGA's official representative and distributor here in Brazil and translated Phantasy Star (SMS) and Riven for Saturn (which was even dubbed), other than that, they had no business in the software side of things.

Another great video! Many of the things I and others said on your "SNES vs. PS1" video still hold true here: it's impressive that there was this much overlap, and the 16-bit developers were really pulling off some minor miracles for the aging Genesis when viewed against much newer hardware (PS1). In Sega's case, it was more out of an unwillingness to let go of their better-performing older console and Sega of America's disastrous-in-hindsight reluctance to fully embrace the Sega Saturn. Getting back to the games, I especially have to give kudos to the quality on "Mickey Mania" and "NBA Hangtime" as impressive achievements for the Genesis, though several of the sports games (especially FIFA) delivered excellent experiences that didn't look any lesser than PS1 despite lacking the full 3D. On other titles, PS1 was clearly making use of their next-gen tech to do some very cool things... often most visible on the game show titles among the list we see here!
One of the big differences between the Genesis and SNES multiplatform games with PS1 was how much of the Genesis library involved sports titles. Not really a surprise, since it was *the* sports game machine of choice in that era. Apart from that, I saw a lot of competing ports of already-vintage arcade games from the 80s, a number of Japan-only RPGs that got remastered versions on PS1, quite a few fighting games where the Genesis either held its own moderately well (MK3, Samurai Showdown) or got stomped (Primal Rage), and... "Klax". Thank goodness we found an excuse to get you to play "Klax" again! I'm sure you were worried there for a second that you'd miss out. ;)
I initially thought you made a goof with the inclusion of "Duke Nukem", but of course, that turned out to be those madmen from Brazil, TecToy, doing their thing and porting titles to Sega consoles still popular there when they were dead as a doornail everywhere else. "Worms" was the other title that caught me off-guard, but from what I can tell, that one may be another that never got released in the North American market but did get an official release elsewhere. Kudos on your thoroughness as always and for another great video!

Thank you so much my friend for your kind words and for your insightful comment! The SNES & Genesis really play to their strengths and reputations in these videos where the SNES has so many RPGs and the Genesis has so many sports titles and shooters like Twin Cobra. Some of the stuff they pulled off much like the SNES was so cool to see like Duke Nukem which I really wish was released in the US. For years I didn't know Hangtime was on the Genesis which is a shame because it's fantastic. Ugh the worst part of the video was retreading not only Klax but Race Drivin' again. I'm surprised Worms didn't get released in the US because it seems like it would have universal appeal but I think it's a PAL exclusive. Anywho, thanks as always for your continued support as it really means a lot to me.

Those 2D games should,ve never belong on the ps1 also since it lacks 2D hardware support BUT for what i,ve heard is that to get around it is just to convert those 2D tile sets & sprites to flat textured polygons to make it appeal to be 2D to the naked eye,if that’s true then that’s what i do consider it a clever way to get 2D on ps1.

If they build the game for that specific hardware, they can make it work. Some of these were too close for the difference in power of the systems. I always found it strange that games like Dragon Slayer: The Legend Of Heroes
and Dragon Slayer: The Legend Of Heroes 2 were remade for the Mega Drive but the SNES and PS1 ports use the same old Japanese computer releases, that frankly, would look bad and actually performs worse than any proper NES RPG, these original ports should actually be unlockables that I'm sure most players wouldn't care to play. Something akin to Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure that features the original Atari 2600 release, but in this case, the Atari original is actually worth playing.

I always love seeing side by side remakes like this though, the PC-98 and Genesis versions of those games easily look the best. Despite what I said about the PS1 above, it still looks better visually than the SNES versions, which have washed out colours and look very bland, lol.
I think those higher res pixel art graphics are a great way to remake an old classic, with better quality and visuals, while still remaining faithful to the original art style, since it's just upressing by hand and adding more detail in the same pixel art medium.

@@tamerkoh Those classic old Japanese PC games look interesting, PC-98, Marty and more, were they running at 480p or higher?
As for why they ported the archaic originals to both the SNES and PS1, this is nothing new, actually, there are many (Japan only) Sega CD games that suffer from the same syndrome. Uninspired visuals and subpar choppy performance, they literally ported many old PC games to consoles from the 16-bit and 32-bit era, most, if not all remained in Japan for obvious reasons. Some were enhanced, though, Kuro no Ken - Blade of the Darkness is an example where devs took a bit more effort to make the console a bit better on the PS1, but the original is still quite decent.

@@TechnologyMan9575 in fact, unlike the N64, the PS1 was built with powerful hardware dedicated to handling 2D graphics, with hundreds of hardware sprites and the ability to manipulate up to eight background layers with independent scrollings, far more than the two background layers on the Genesis!
This 2D hardware was kept in the PS1 project due to requests from Japanese game developer studios, many with 2D shmup franchises that were very popular in Japan on machines like the PC Engine, SNES and Sega Genesis and would continue to appear later on the Sony machine!
Parallax effects are achieved (this goes for the PS1, SNES and Genesis) by the programmers by individually manipulating the scrolling speeds of the background layers, so the quality of the parallax effect depends more on the skill of the programmer than on the capabilities of the 2D hardware.

I was thinking the same (I am always biased to the Megadrive usually!) however.... 14:56 check out how much smoother mega man 3 is compared to the PS1. The Ps1 is excused however as it did not have blast processing capabilities XD Mercs had an "original" mode as well which made the game longer and you could level up.

You don't understand sora, the Genesis was a pure sprite crunching machine. That's what made the Sega Saturn so great to, though it did 3D just as well, if not better than the PS1. I've been gaming since the days of the Atari 2600, and I've seen lots of things come, and go.
