Royal Enfield Bullet 4 speed gearbox - converting to close ratio, the whole process step by step.

  • Apologies for the repeat showing of the first couple of minutes, but they tie in with the rest of the material in this compilation, where I try to discuss and demonstrate aspects of 'how to' strip the 4 speed R.E. Bullet gearbox and fit a close ratio conversion - and a wide ratio conversion would be fitted in the same manner, for that matter.
I don't go into great depth about stripping and rebuilding the gearbox itself this time, as I already have video material discussing that, but most of what needs to be done is covered here and might be of some use to some wishing to carry out this conversion.

I loved watching you work, and learned a bit too in the process.
I know not many would say this to you, but I would like to thank you Paul, for your great uploads, that are easy to understand, and bring me so much enjoyment to watch.
I now understand why the owner wants a close ratio 4th.. as I never realised that this wolf in sheep's clothing, was a bit of a special!

As always another enjoyable and informative video.
I always wanted to put a close ratio gearset in the much modified 350 Clipper I had in the early 80s but they weren't available at the time.
On the subject of putting grease in the gearbox it was recommended on pre Bullet models to put a dollop into the recess at the bottom of the gearbox main casing after overhaul, I think the idea being to help the rudimentary felt seals they used from leaking, it was never recommended to add any grease at any time after this and it certainly wasn't necessary.

With respect Paul, the workshop manual for the Indian-made Bullets says "For initial filling up of gear box VEEDOL `00' grease is recommended. During routine maintenance, topping up may be done with SAE 50 oil. The capacity is 700 grams (Approx.) of `00' grease mixed with SAE 50 grade oil to a thick consistancy" The workshop manual for the Redditch-built Bullets, of which I have one, says similar. My 1954 350 Bullet, which I have owned since 1967, would piss oil out of the gearbox. I rebuilt the bike about three years ago and this time, packed the gearbox with the recommended '00' grease (very fluid) topped off with oil. I now have a gearbox that doesn't leak and changes gear perfectly after 3,000 miles. I have since persuaded my brother, who has a collection of RE twins, to try the same and he too is very pleased with the result. Just thought it worth a mention.
Thank you for your very informative videos, Lindsay.

Yes, I know, but the original Redditch manual says OIL, and, seeing as the Bullet was their baby, I prefer to follow their information. The Indians also forgot that the 350 Bullets like more ignition advance than the 500 versions!

Workshop Manual 1949-1955 350cc + 500cc Bullets Section E1, Page 3, Subsection 5, Paragraph 7: "Make sure all parts are clean before assembly. In normal climate the recesses in the gearbox should be packed with soft grease and the box should be filled up to the correct level with gear oil. (See subsection 9.) On no account must heavy yellow grease be used."

My manual says 'Oil'. As for 'Recesses' - which I take to mean things like the bearings and gear change mechanism, although I just 'Fill with oil', as also stated. Carry on nit-picking if you must, and stuff your gearbox full of grease if it keeps you happy, it is no skin off my nose and I will continue using oil, as it states on the filler plugs of British machines and enjoy being able to use the filler, level and drain plugs for their intended purposes, thanks all the same.

If I put oil in my Indian trials bullet gearbox, I go out a week later to find it's peed half of it out past the bearing and final drive sprocket and onto the floor. Probably due to a combination of the lack of seal on the sprockets of the size I'm using and parking it canted over on the sidestand so the oil level is above the mainshaft level. So grease it is. Which in fairness, it what's specified in the owners manual. I'm running EP90 in my 612 bullet which has a bearing with one seal on the end of the mainshaft, it seems to be able to keep hold of the oil despite also being parked on the sidestand. The close ratio gears are a good modification though as long as you have enough power to pull first properly, makes third a viable road-speed gear to ride about in on the twisties without the engine screaming and snick 4th when cruising.

I presume it must be either an Indian manual, or some other more recent manual you refer to, as the Redditch manual states 'engine oil'.

Hi Paul, Is it possible to change the gearbox bearings in situ or does the box have to come out of the frame? I know that you have to warm the case up and bang the case on a block of wood to get the bearing to drop out but was wondering if it can be done with the box in the frame, somehow.
