Wilco's latest album is a huge rise in energy compared to the band's last two releases, pumping out numerous catchy, straightforward rock tunes and ballads.
What do you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

Why don't hipsters get Sky Blue Sky?Is it too hard for them to understand top notch songwriting? It seems that if you don't make fart noises throughout the tunes, your material is automatically rendered unoriginal, bland and dad rock...Sky Blue Sky stands alongside their best albums

    • @jpollackauthor

They hate it because Wilco signed a deal with Volkswagen that year and licensed half the album for use in their commercials, so hipsters single it out to shit on because tHeY SoLd oUt MANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

Whole Love is the most OVERLOOKED album in Wilco's discography. My third favorite of theirs (behind Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot).

  • @samekogan
    @samekogan Před 10 lety +31

I do like it and have liked everything Wilco has put out but still, to this date, no LP stands out to me more than Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I love every track on that album, I feel like in an odd way it just all goes together. Stoll, the whole love is a pretty solid LP but I'd have to give it more listens to really really like it.

I, like a lot of fans, used to give poor Weezer a lot of flack because every album they released seemed to go further and further away from Pinkerton. I just wanted them to release Pinkerton over and over again. YHF, like Pinkerton, is one of those albums that will never be made again. I just expect to like every album for what it is, not expecting them to ever make another YHF, and I never end up being disappointed as a result. Good music is good music.

    • @samekogan

+Jeremy Schep i agree and i have no expectation of them to make that album again i was really just simply stating my favorite wilco album. i also love summerteeth and being there. the others, ive had my moments with but ive never been as into them since bennet left. just my opinion.

yeah, well to me some fans are just so weird about Bennett. Like he was great, and played a role in my 2 favorite albums of theirs, but he wasn't the band (I've seen some people saying he WAS Wilco, which just isn't true). Contrary to what Fantano thinks though I believe Nels Cline has been breathing new life into Wilco as his role has grown and the last two albums are their best since the Bennett era.

as with most Wilco albums it takes a few listens to really absorb the feel of the album and this one is no different, and I would recommend going back to it. And listen to some of the tracks live often changes my appreciation for them. Great review though, thanks.

I think Wilco has done very well when they "borrow" the sounds from classic albums, it doesn't mean they're not original, I just think they have a way of creating classic sounding music....and they're not dad rock, I saw these guys live back in 2007, and they are full of energy, and I think they put more energy into The Whole Love than their previous two releases, which are still great albums. Great review Anthony, I was wondering about your opinion of this band :-)

I agree that this is one of their best since YHF. When I thought about the album, I imagine that the band took their best qualities from most of their albums and it resulted in The Whole Love. It definitely made it to my top ten albums of the year.

@ImperviousMason nah, i'm gonna keep scorin. if you don't care about scores, then don't pay any mind to 'em. scores only have the power you give to them. if they annoy you, you choose to be annoyed. if you love them, you choose to love them. if they piss you off, you choose to be pissed. scores are numbers. the only meaning they have is what you place on them.

Growing up in Chicago in the 90s I spent a lot of time at industrial shows. Wilco shows were my palette cleansers, so to speak. Amazing energy and presence in their live shows. I've outgrown almost all the industrial stuff, except for Einsturzende Neubauten. How about a review of Alles in Allem? Would love to hear your take on it.

I've been a Wilco fan since YHF, and this is the best record they have put out in my opinion. It is definitely the most developed. It's actually the most interesting since it's the first record on their own label. It has that weirdness that I love in Wilco and the melodies are the best that Jeff has ever worked out. It also has a lot of builds and breaks which keeps the record interesting. This record definitely grew on me throughout the first day that it came out and now. Hooked on them!

Really good album. I have to agree with you about the slow songs, though. They don't resonate with me nearly as much as the upbeat ones, but I absolutely love "One Sunday Morning Song." I think the thin production just adds to the somberness of it.
I also recommend their collaborative album they did with Billy Bragg, Mermaid Avenue Volume I and II, back in '98 and '00. Really solid albums from two amazing artists.

@TheFrugalGamer No I agree. It gets unfairly put down. This review is no different. I didn't like it either cuz it wasn't as crazy and rockish as 'A Ghost is Born' but that was only the first skimmed listen. Months later I picked it back up and slowly fell in love. Jeff pours his heart out in that thing and it's just bursting with beauty and meaningful poetry. I realized that I was a fool for having any expectations for it based on their past work. It's a subdued but masterful album.

Fantano thank you for another stellar review. Also, thanks to Cal for the introduction. I am a fan who likes everything Wilco puts out I liked sky blue sky even and Wilco the album. So to me this album is the best thing they have done since a ghost is born.. its no summer teeth or YFTH but it comes close IMO.I agree the ballads can be a tad boring at times depending on my mood. This is definitely going on my top ten for 2011. Along with radiohead and fleet foxes..

I was never a Wilco fan before this album. The only reason for that is the lack of exposure. Wilco is an amazing band, and The Whole Love shows it through and through. I disagree with your opinion on "Art of Almost". The building solo that includes various loops and massive amounts of energy is one of my favorite parts of this CD. The end of that song leaves you wanting more. And they serve up a heaping platter of MORE with "I Might". BTW, Nels plays the solo from track 1 AMAZINGLY live.

So when I heard he died I decided to just go cold turkey from it. What followed was the worst 3-4 weeks of my life. Now, when I listen to cold turkey, my skin crawls in a very uncomfortable kind of way. Kind of like fingers on a chalk board.
